H1...chips and bends

I have been using my Salt1 SE as a outdoor user knife. Its done everything from opening a bag of soil to scrapping muck out of a crevice. There is not one chip, ding, nick, bend in the blade. Only thing is scratches and that is fully expected. After I am done with it, when washing my hands I throw it in the sink, give it a good scrub and its good to go.

Love the Salt line and considering another(LB Salt Hawkbill for vacation :) )

H1 is a great steel to use for a kitchen knife, fishing, food prep in general. I would not take this knife and use it for cardboard breakdown, whittling hard wood, etc. Not sure what happened with the sharpening but, pull through "hand held" sharpeners are the least desireable to produce any sort of working edge. I'd rather sharpen a knife with the bottom of a coffee mug than use a carbide scraper. For camping cabon steel or INFI is king. For hard EDC tasks, S30V is great, S90V is much better. Use the right tool for the job and it will minimize problems down the road. As far as the bent tip with dropping on a cardboard box, I'd call that a bit of a reach. Unless you can provide clear, focused, and well lit pictures I cannot just buy that as fact.

I'm editing my post in response to Sal's amazing customer service.

He is just such a great guy and demonstrates a personal pride in his products and respect to his customers which is far and above what most companies provide.

I knew there was a reason why spyderco's are my favorites ;)

Hi Jraptor,

Sorry for your disappointment. It does sound rather unusual for the material. Why don't you send it to me personally. We can test it to determine the problem, and we can certainly replace the knife with a"good" one.

As much as all of our BS meters were pegged from the OP, I've got to say that this post is a complete class act. I'm going to buy some Spydercos (that I've been sitting on the fence about) just because I want to support a company that treats even the most outlandish customers with this kind of respect.

That's integrity right there.

I used a syderhawk all of last christmas season and this is not characteristic of the h1 I used. Boy did I beat the crap out of that knife ,felt bad somedays . But when you just worked a twelve hr shift ,its raining ,the temp is forty and a car pulls up and asks you to cut a tree down from a rusty old stake ,put it on there roof you tend to rush things. You tend to forget about being nice to your blade. In all seriousness he could of got a lemon it happens .he should send it to Golden and see what they say.

My post has nothing to do with this thread, but i'd like to say: ''Spyderco customer service is the best!''

I gotta say, I've owned my spyderco Endura for... almost 3 days now. First spyderco knife, this is my second (or third?) post on this forums. As a fairly uninformed observer, there's lots to pay attention to here. OP making shady claim without really following up. (time from post, to youtube video, and no follow up info, no pictures, no back-and-forth) The community here on bladeforums response to OP about sharpeners, technique, and possibilities for the problems described. (not talking about Sal at the moment) And then Sal's response (NOW we're talking about Sal) Gotta say, I'm impressed all around. Makes me proud to own the knife and be a member here. NOT that I actually needed that to make me proud to own the knife, cause I've been playing with the knife for 3 days now and it stands on its own merits. Tight lockup, no play at all, smooth deployment (with a learning curve on fast deployment, I'm spoiled off my 'speedsafe' Leek) razor sharp out of the box. I took this sucker out and showed it off to a friend, day 2. 'Wait right there, let me show you something *seconds later I have the Endura and a piece of paper* You have to try this' ...I look at my knife (granted it's the ZDP-189 Endura, not the H1 Salt) and the quality and attention to detail that went into making a knife that is this perfect and I can't imagine that the same company would put out a knife that has the issues mentioned above.

My money is that it's an ebay knife that's very salt-like in appearance, and nothing more. There are a few 'how to spot counterfeit' topics on here that might be of particular relevance.

Roger that, EZBake. I love supporting family businesses who "get it" like Sal and crew. Sign me up for another dozen or two Spydies!

Hi Hewhoisiam,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum. Hope you enjoy your Endura. I will admit that ZDP is pretty special stuff.

Thanx for the kind words all.

I have been hammering my warrior for about a year now- all manner of tasks. I'm collating info and pics for a review I'll write when I feel I have enough to form a definitive impression. Thus far OP's experience doesn't equate with my experience of Spyderco's H1 (in this and other knives.)

It looked like chipping. Bits of the metal were flaked away. Perhaps it was so soft the sharpener cut it? I see what you're saying, a edge would chip if the metal was too hard, while it bends when it is too soft. That would be a contradiction. Maybe my wording wasn't correct, but my narrative is accurate.

Unfortunately I didn't check this post in awhile. I didn't take a bunch of pictures, I just sent it back to Spyderco. I wish I had sent it to you because I was honestly surprised. I have allot of Sypderco knives and they are exceptional. I EDC a Native (which I have had for years). I recieved the knife back today, and it was sharpened and re-profiled (the bent tip ground off) but no mention of my problems was made (I included a letter).
I figured the H1 was going to be super and I intended it for EDC. No one was more surprised than me when it started flaking at the edge when sharpened, or when the tip bent. When that tip bent I bet the look on my face would have made a great WTF? picture.

Well see how it goes this time with the new edge. Probably a good idea to ditch any pull through style sharpeners if you have any, they really do more harm than good.

I'd guess that they examined the knife in the lab and found it was ok. In spec, and the damage done to it was not the fault of any warranty or defect issues.

That Sal doesn't get on here and say that personally is a tribute to his class in not wanting to unnecessarily embarass you, the customer. If it was a warranty issue you would have a new knife.

I thought there was something pretty fishy with the story of dropping it on cardboard and having it bent.

They fixed up your knife. They could have charged you if it wasn't a warranty problem. Be glad. Learn more about using knives.

Yeah, like ours did when we read your version of the story. :)

+1 to The Mastiff.
I'd also recommend getting that carbide pull through scraper/sharpener and placing it carefully into your recycle bin. Get a Sharpmaker to maintain the edges on everything from kitchen knives, to sewing needles.

Im going to send it to Sal, per his invitation. I would like to get to the bottom of the problem. To assume they did anything but sharpen it and reprofile it without mentioning the problems does not imply that they checked the hardness, etc. I do applaud the company, and as I said, I have several excellent Sypderco knives, but I stand by what I posted (other than the nasty tone of my original post, which I edited after re-reading it). I sharpened 6 other knives I had at hand, with the sharpener I used, and had NO problems with it (in fact, it works pretty well). I have a better sharpener but I usually don't need to use it if I do quick touch ups.
