H1...chips and bends

Too bad if he pulled all his videos. At least one of them was VERY interesting.

I missed them. Interesting in there was a reason he pulled them down? I know it's been a strange thread overall.

No nothing like that.

He had a video stating that he sharpened several high end knives (that he showed) on the same sharpener that was claimed to have shredded the H1....and he had a video documenting his top 5 weapon picks for zombie invasion.

I do not want to offer much/any commentary other than to say watching his videos raised a few questions for me and made me more interested in this thread. I know nothing of this guy other than to say it appears he has access to some fairly expensive knives that he claims to sharpen on the same device that perhaps initiated this thread.

My opinions of H1 remain intact. It is a great alloy that has its place in the world of cutlery. But comparing it to steels will generally result in FAR more differences than similarities...and while it is not obvious to many perhaps, it is poor logic to assume that H1 should perform the same way that many blade steels will.

I can put them back up if anyone want's to see them. I figured the situation was kind of dead (since the knife was re-profilled). It seems the knife was an anomaly, with no other user's having any problems with the steel, so why leave up a video that would look bad for Spyderco.

The Zombie video was a hoot. I got a good chuckle from it. The other videos (pertinent to this thread)...I think you probably did well to pull them. No offense, but the video quality did little to showcase the issues you were having...and for me at least, they raised more questions than answers.

It appears you have some fine knives at your disposal...If you can figure a way to get good macro shots from them, you might well produce some interesting videos (particularly relating to your sharpening methods and the success you have with them). As you know, not all knives and alloys are the same, so we all must adjust our maintenance regimen accordingly.

Regarding the Salt being an anomaly or not...honestly, I could imagine that it was not extra-ordinary in any way. I have had odd observations for metal deformations that seemed anomalous based on my understanding of the events that lead to the damage/deformation...however upon close examination and careful recount of the events, I have always explained the damages with something I failed to observe the first time around.

As a totally unrelated example...I had a friend with a similar knife (serrated) that had a U-turn in the tip and he could not explain how it happened. (it was about 1 mm of the tip damaged). Long story short, he had a Kydex sheath he made and he unknowingly got some detritus in it while in the field one day (small rocks and sand)...it folded his tip over nicely;) he presented the knife with no sheath...it was not until I started asking about the scratches on the blade a few days later that he mentioned a sheath he made that worked poorly and scratched up the blade so he tossed it in a box under the bench and went back to the other sheath....that was when the light went off!

Until I saw the sheath (with no drain hole...and sand scratching around in it) that I had a reasonable explanation for the damage. None of his stated uses could have resulted in the damage I saw on that blade...turns out it was the storage (or being returned forcefully to the sheath) and not the use that did the damage.

Feel like Watson as Sherlock explains it all and the lightbulb goes on just over my head...LOL! ;-)
