Harpy XL!!! Who's with me????

just trying to keep this post near the top.

4", plain edge VG-10 would be nice. zytel would be nice to keep the cost and weight down.

Do all you folks who want a plain-edge already have/use the Merlin in it's non-serrated form? Just wondering.

Saw a few posts wondering why a hawkbill blade would be useful... I do a lot of fishing and it does great on ropes, cords, etc... but it has MANY other uses.. I figure it would be a greatdefense tool (I know nothing about martial bladecraft, but this could sure as hell slash easily...)

Now that I recently got my new harpy, I have usedit to: remove a splinter from my hand, remove gunk from under my fingernails after working in the yard, opened a bunch of mail, used the tip to remove a hanging thread from my tie, on and on.... Sure it may not be an ideal blade styly for Everything, but what it... With my lifestyle, it comes in handy in many applications.... I woul LOVE a HUGE one....

it looks almost as if the tip of the knife rests on the handle? if you took a rough hit on the top of the blade would the tip snap off? or at the least wouldn't it begin to cut into the handle?

Ian:
That's a fair-question, but close inspection of the Harpy (or any of the curved Spydies) will reveal that the tip isn't able to contact the handle material because the inner surface of the blade-base (kick) rests solidly on the blade locking bar.
I have several antique pruners of the slip-joint variety which use a similar method of resting the kick of the blade against the inner surface of the spring.
The "Kick" is the area of blade stock beyond the choil (at the bottom) which bears the maker's stamp.
Hope this helps

ahh, ok that makes sense. my ladybug(only spyderco i currently own) digs into the handle and thats always bothered me.

In regards to comments on a plain blade, I've had both a plain Merlin and have a Microtech Kestrel plain.

I prefer the Harpy to the Merlin because the quality feel of the Harpy is much better. But I prefer plain blades over serrated. They work better for me and I find them easier to sharpen

The Kestrel cuts better than the Merlin maybe the 154 CM material or the thinner blade section.

I realize that Zytel or FRN would provide a lower cost knife but I would prefer the better feel and appearance of G-10 or micarta even if it meant paying more. I sold one Merlin and gave away the other but would never part with either my Harpy or Kestrel.

My preference for a large size Harpy style Spyderco would be a four inch VG-10 plain blade (possibly with less curve than the Harpy), a liner or some other lock than the lock back, G-10 or micarta scales, a lanyard hole, and a reverible pocket clip.

Couldn't the Temperance platform be modified to take a Hawkbill blade?

Edit-- Oh yeah, the Temperance platform has a 3 inch blade, which would not fulfil the XL portion of this idea.

I don't have the Temperance in front of me, but from the pics, the handle looks like it could handle slightly more blade length if inletted differently. You may have a point.

I love the size of Camillus Claw, but I wish it had the ergonomics and thinner blade of my G-10 Harpy.
My preference for steel would be VG-10, but the handle material would be much more important to me, say in Titanium Steel, Aluminum, or G-10.

Say Hawkbill do you own a Microtech Hawk, if so how do you like it? Were there any manual versions of that knife made or were they all auto's?

Also do you own any of Reece Weiland's custom hawkbills, they are nice but expensive.

Troy:
I too have the CUDA Claw. It's close to what I'm hoping for from this concept as a Spydie, but obviously with the flair and feel inherent to products from Golden, CO.
I don't have a Hawk or Wieland, although I do own an Elishewitz Parrot Beak. The only Hawks I've seen have been autos, but there may have been a manual. I did hear that they may be returning.

This knife we're trying to conceptualize would effectively bridge the gap between parkerized claws and custom pieces.

The Microtech Hawk only came as an auto. I contacted Microtech some time ago about them producing a manual version. Thye said they had no plans to do so.

It seems that the Camillus CUDA Hawk is no longer available.

That means there is no production knife of quality with a larger size hawk style blade.

The market is wide open for that SpyderHawk we've been asking for.

IT appears that the lieklyhood is growing. We'll be showing the proto of the Endura/Harpy at Blade. We already have one customer overseas interested in enough to move forward.

Hey Roshi, interesting name SpyderHawk. I'll bring it up with Warren (Sales/Mktg).

OUTSTANDING!!!

Can't wait to see some pictures of this. I will need several of the Spyderhawks. How about a PS blade please! :D
