Hartsfield?

You may or may not like me, but what I wrote to Lorien was harsh, and he didn't deserve it....it was a knee-jerk reaction because his sense of humor occasionally reveals itself at the completely wrong time for me, and it diverts my attention/"aggression"/assholishness.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I thought you both may be joking with each other, but hey, it is all good. I appreciated the fact that you had begun to give me the benefit of the doubt. I really do not dislike anyone, and I have respect for what you have accomplished in your life. I would even go so far as to say I do like you. Good to see a fellow warrior out there.

Be nice, STeven. Joe appears to do like most of us and let Paul make the call on color schemes. etc. The only bad thing he does is insist on putting those mokume doorknobs that his car mechanic makes on the sheaths.;)

Thanks Joe:)

Here's a 5 1/4 inch blade Kwaiken and a 3 1/2 inch blade Wasabi made by R.J.

Both are chisel ground with a zero edge, both are users, in the 2 years I've had the wasabi it's never needed sharpening.

The Kwaiken I haven't had as long.

I'm not a photographer, sorry for the bad picture.

That's it? C'mon! More More More! Or someone can post some knife photos in the Hartsfield/Martin style of blades!

STeven: I'll mail you some rope (if i ever get around to acquiring some more!)

Po, I can see you are the type of guy who loves to see a train wreck! I'm too pooped to type any more. It has been a long day. Let's all give it a rest.

Thanks for the photos Goblin! They look very nice! Gotta use that seperate flash unit and point it to the ceiling and bounce the light off the ceiling!

Seriously, I'm turning into a pumpkin in a few minutes, so I gots to call it quits. Talk to you tomorrow!

HA! I'm just now eating dinner! Atleast 3 hours more to go on this caffeine fuel!

Hi All. This turned into a typical Hartsfield Thread But I like the way this one grew. The Thread progressed and ended in a more positive way. My wife commented; "All this, about blades??" Thanks, All.

I thought I posted a reply here yesterday, but it looks like it never made it thru cyberspace.

WRT the edges on my Japanese knives, whether chisel ground or double flat ground, they are zero grinds. I do try to "roll" the bevel slightly at the very edge, because it adds a lot of strength to what is, regardless of sho makes the knife, a very thin edge. We are talking about adding perhaps .001 to what is perhaps .005" thick a short distance behind the primary edge. That's 20%!!

When an edge is sharpened to ZERO, the very edge is so thin it turns to foil. In the process of removing this, I create a slight "appleseed". You would need a high powered magnifier to see this, but it is there. This "rolled edge" is done on the bevel side of a chisel ground blade, and on both sides of a double ground blade.

I really dislike pissing contests, so I will simply add that having made 100's of japanese style knives over a period of 20 years, I have never had a single customer complaint, a knife returned because it didn't hold up, or a return for any other reason.

Chefget posted a pic of a 5" KOZUKA I made for him. He has been using that knife for years now, and preps food on stainless steel tables. He even told me that he rolls out aluminum foil on the stainless steel tables and cuts it to size. If memory serves, he has never returned the knife to me for sharpening, although from the swirl marks on the blade, he has sharpened it.

A2 is a steel that has been around a long time. It's metallurgy and heat treatment has been studied, experimented with and documented to death.

By the way R.J. When is the description on that Kwaiken going to come on your website? It has said "coming soon" for what now a year? Good god man! Tell your webmaster to get to it!

I gotta be honest I kinda admire it.. I saw a PH knife in Vegas at my first show. It had green packawood handle scales, chisel ground, maybe 9" overall length. The guy that owned it said he paid $900 for the knife.. I thought to myself I was going to be rich. I couldnt even imagine making $1800 an hour at the time.

Hey Trace-

If that was the year it was at that crappy hotel (I think it was the Riviera or something), then I am 99% sure you are talking about me. I brought a green pakkawood-handled (with matching green leather sheath) Mini Force to that show......

Anyway, I still think that Mr. and Mrs. Hartsfield are two of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet, and I definitely still like the way his knives look, but I have personally moved on.

I got Paranee's Moose knife in the mail along with a bronze hub cap off a 67 Lincoln for the stud button. I used to think Hartsfield made ugly knives but after seeing this one....well Hartsfield practically makes art knives by comparison. Joe had a lot of suggestions for the making of the sheath which I really appreciated. It's good for my business because when ever a customer tries to help, I double the price. More as this developes.

Yah bud, Im pretty sure it was you too;) Hey I'm not saying anything against Mr. Hartsfield personally. Im sure he is a great guy, and I do admire the following he has built and the prices his work commands. I probably should have stayed out of this thread, but I thought I would pipe in about RJ's stuff.

Anyway I generally feel its bad form to speak ill of other makers. If I offended anyone it wasnt my intent, I was just being a wiseass..;)

I personally didn't take offense at your comments, nor think you were being critical of Phill as a person. :)

Besides, there's lot of room for different tastes out there, and I like knives from many different makers, Phill, RJ, and you included. :) Hell, I still wish I hadn't sold my DLC CPM3V Armageddon..... :p
