Lots of us play with knives and love knives; but I think some don't really understand their devastating power.

I'm not talking a slip when your sharpening or whittling and you get a little poke in the finger. Heck, I stabbed myself in the finger the other day. Bled for a while, but no biggie.

A few years back I had a serious slip; went through a tendon and an artery in my arm. Never even felt it. But let me tell you, seeing the blood pumping out of my arm made the fear factor hit the top and I was scared. I'll admit it. Needless to say, some serious direct pressure and a quick trip to the ER and a whole lot of stiches, followed by a few months of rehab and I'm fine.

I learned a whole new respect that day. I won't even let my wife leave the kitchen knives in the strainer when she cleans them. They go straight back into the wooden block.

Anyone else ever face the fear factor?

It's amazing how we take knives for granted sometimes. We all have been exposed to so many knives and sharp tools that we never think about how accidentally deadly they can be. I've seen some seriously nasty cuts from mistakes. Luckily, my near death experiences have never involved being sliced too bad. Most of them simply involved crazy women with guns.

Nothing too bad done on my own. Few minor mishaps here and there.

Only real bad one was when I was really little. My older brother thought it would be funny to lunge at my face with his Boy Scout knife. Instinct of course kicked in and I put my hands up. Good thing I did because the blade ended up going roughly an inch into the palm of my left hand. Could've been my eye instead.

A lot of blood for sure as I remember, but my mom got the bleeding stopped and bandaged me up.

My dad was a cop for 30 years and just so happened he wasn't home when this happened. Away on forensics training. Needless to say, my brother got the crud kicked out of him when dad got home. Dad took his knife permanently and later gave it to me and I still have to this day.

I was stabbed one in the right leg by a Buck 110, and I had a Kabar 1217 break and the blade stuck in my left thigh. I've been shot at, but never shot, and I've been threatened with large blades but never cut.

Other than that, I've been pretty blessed.

I can think of three serious cuts/stabs that ended with me getting medical attention. It happens...I like to think I learn from these experiences.

The worst part of it all is that most recent one (about 2 years ago) I went into the ER and they knew me by name...That was not a good year for me, but it seemed to have been a good year for sharp pointy things.

Have you never been cut is a better one for this group here ;-).

At least with what I've learned about sharpening here at BF, the cuts are painless...though they bleed a lot more hahahah.

Of the knives in my small pile now that can't cleanly push cut a phonebook page, I have a Rajah II and an Ontario 18" machete. The prospect of getting around to fixing that 'problem' with those two scares me a bit.

I'm extremely careful around larger blades, but the small ones get you. I heard it pop when it hit the bone. Trigger finger none the less.

I tell CCW students the next time they laugh at the phrase “don’t bring a knife to a gunfight” to go look up some pics of knife wounds and tell me if they’ve changed their mind.

the picture is why i always leave the izzy in the sheath while i wrap it :D

I severed part of the tip of my left index finger and thumb with a Randall back in 1990 or so. We picked up the bits and they reattached them at the hospital. They are now nicely beveled. :p

It was in the sheath. The tension of the sheath gives a false sense of security when tying the finishing knot. I tied the knot and at some point my hand put pressure against the sheath. Just as I was about to release, the sheath popped loose. There have been at least a half dozen members here that have done the exact same thing. I would recommend wrapping the blade in plenty of tape.

Had a few of those instances. 2 user errors and one freak accident. One user error was some drunk guy trying to cut me, and if he had a sharp knife I would not have a scar running from my shoulder to almost my wrist. Thank the big guy upstairs for a dull knife that couldn't cut hot butter and a leather jacket.
The freak accident was me going trough a smaller vein or sth in my hand with a can because i was avoiding a knife that slid off from the counter.
And the third user error was me slicing about half way trough my thumb with a knife.

I used to work in the culinary industry, 12 years or so. For the first few years the cuts were pretty often, but never too bad actually. Later, when I got much sharper knives, was when I got comfortable. I've sliced off the tips of two fingers, more than once.
None of those required the ER. Slicing off the pinky tip was a close one, 6 hours of bleeding, not lots of blood, but it wouldn't stop.
Suppose I've been careful, and lucky over the years. I'm thinking that after hearing the previous stories.
I'd say we all have had some close ones, like hitting my wrist with a poor swing with a very sharp kukri. It was slowing down to a stop just as it touched my wrist. A small line was cut into my skin, and just a spot of blood. But, in my mind I was imagining what could have happened.
Stay sharp, but safe guys!

That is my izula paracord wrap wound. Now I tape the blade when I wrap my izula. It was 8 stitches and a lesson that will last me the rest of my life. I have much respect for knives now, no matter how small they are.

When I was 20 years old I was an apprentice in a tattoo shop in Vegas called Picture Perfect Tattoo. I was working one night when a couple of super hot chicks came into the shop. I was just finishing a really great piece on a friend, the girl loved it and requested me even though I was still an "apprentice". The guy I was apprenticing under finally gave in (He put up on hell of fight). It was after midnight so he closed up the shop and went a few doors down to the bar and told me to come find him when I was done and finished cleaning the shop.

So after I'm done with the piece on this girl she agrees to go to the bar with me. I clean the shop and we walk down. We're only there for an hour or so but the Jager is flowing and we're having a great time. I'm hanging out with my partner talking business and the girl and her friend had made their way over to the poker machines. There was this drunk dude who had been trying to hit on them all night and he wasn't giving in. She finally comes over and asks if I can make this guy go away.

To make a long story short we end up in a fight. I guess he was regretting that decision because he soon took off out the back door. Now I'm pissed so I chase him. Unfortunately I also managed to catch him. He stabbed me in the stomach. There isn't a lot I remember because I passed out pretty quickly however I never forgot how strange it was that I never felt a thing. I only knew I was stabbed because of the warmth I felt from the blood. He cut that main artery so when I lifted my shirt and saw the blood squirt like 5 feet I kinda got weak kneed. The next day however wasn't so pleasant. For a week it felt like, what I imagine labor pains to feel like. Once the muscles started contracting there was no stopping them.

Yeah, good times growing up in Vegas. Next weeks episode "Strip Clubs at 18"

I wanted to post in this thread so i just did this a couple hours ago.

Really what happened: I was snowshoeing and thought "this is nice scenery, I should take a pic of it and my Izula II for the ESEE board." my hands were cold and numb, I removed my left glove and grabbed my camera, then got my knife with my gloved hand and went to unsheath it. My finger got in the way and boom, blood everywhere instantly. Really sucked. Hiked back to town about 2 miles, leaving a nice blood trail, then went to the ER.

I've been pretty lucky so far. I love knives and have many, but the seriousness of the injuries you can get from them is never far from my mind.

For that matter, i am also very aware how dangerous driving is, which is something most people seem completely oblivious too.

My most serious slip up was when i was younger (probably early teens). It was late and i was cutting up a piece of chocolate with a SAK when it suddenly broke through the resistance and into my hand.

Luckily it wasn't a serious cut, and only required 3 or 4 stitches, but boy did i feel stupid! Also, who manages to stab themselves with a slipjoint and not slice themselves in the process?!? I'm "special" to be sure.

Here's how it looked when I went in to get consultation on surgery. I severed my superficial radial nerve. Don't do that. It sucks.

Here it is now.

I need to invest in a better camera... Anyway, wound up putting that a little more than 1/4" into my finger. They put glue and a splint on it instead of stitches so I guess it wasn't too bad, but it was about a month ago and it's still healing.

Edit:

There's not much story behind it, I was just being dumb. I carry my Izula across my waist horizontally, and one day I was sitting down screwing around with it, feeling the contour of the handle as it went toward the sheath. Well, for whatever reason I thought that I should pull the blade out and try to follow the count our of the handle up to the guard as it came out. So I pulled it out, and cut my finger. I don't know if my knives aren't as sharp as everyone else's, but I definitely felt it and it stung a lot. It really doesn't look bad in the pic, but it was deep and the side of my finger was separated by the rest by like 1-2 mm.

I've had one other bad cut that needed stitches, but it was because it was right on top of a knuckle so whenever I bent my finger, the bone of my knuckle would stick out through the hole as the skin dragged over the joint. I was like 10 or so and was trying to whittle a stick and forgot not to cut toward myself. It felt a lot different than I expected because when I whacked my finger that's all I felt was the steel whacking the bone. Didn't realize I had been cut until a little later; that time it didn't really hurt except for the whole impact thing.

No pics for you but watch out for the Sharpmaker too. I was getting a little too confident and wathing TV while sharpening my Izzy. Well I then stroked down onto the back of my left wrist. Scared the crap out of me...could have been much worse. Such a clean cut I was able to SuperGlue the flap of skin shut. The SG saved me a trip to the ER for stitches. Now I have a cool scar...Chicks dig knife scars!!!!
