Have you ever been cut?

Lots of us play with knives and love knives; but I think some don't really understand their devastating power.

I'm not talking a slip when your sharpening or whittling and you get a little poke in the finger. Heck, I stabbed myself in the finger the other day. Bled for a while, but no biggie.

A few years back I had a serious slip; went through a tendon and an artery in my arm. Never even felt it. But let me tell you, seeing the blood pumping out of my arm made the fear factor hit the top and I was scared. I'll admit it. Needless to say, some serious direct pressure and a quick trip to the ER and a whole lot of stiches, followed by a few months of rehab and I'm fine.

I learned a whole new respect that day. I won't even let my wife leave the kitchen knives in the strainer when she cleans them. They go straight back into the wooden block.

Anyone else ever face the fear factor?

No buddy, thankfully I've never opened myself up. I've blasted a 6 inch spiral through a finger with a nail gun, slid down the highway with my leg pinned under a motorcycle etc....ya, ok, I was hammered.:D But your post reminded me of the very real danger of my being deep in the bush and cutting myself badly. I am taking this possibilty far more seriously this year. Guys discuss bush survival around here and this scenario is a primary concern to me. I'm glad that you made it, and thanks for the reminder.

one of the guys at the er took the pic and sent it too me cuz i didnt have my phone with me

Wow. Looks like this thread has a winner.

I had a bad experience with one of my katanas (no joke)... stabbed myself in the thigh with it and just missed the artery. Funny i know, but i was 15 and was kinda scared.

Worst cut i had was when I was 10 years old.

I was playing "Marines" in the back yard and was sitting on top of the cement wall that was my fence. I was hacking away at a small tree limb with the tiniest of blades from my new micro leatherman. Got it Easter morning, this was the next day. Needless to say i missed the branch and cut the first quarter inch of my thumb off. Damn that blade was sharp.

I got down from the fence fine, walked in the house, and called for my parents. They came down and had me try to run it under the sink. According to my folks, I turned pale as a ghost and started to pass out. Woke up a few minutes later.

Ironically, I have been collecting blades ever since. Dont know why, but ive always been a "knife guy". Just started to get into my real blades though, most of my stuff has been cheap stuff with the exception of my swiss army knives.

In relation to ESEE... I take it buying the micarta scales is a good plan for when i get my Izula?

but i have had a few bad knife cuts i have also been stabed kinda lol me and a friend where playing around a lond time ago long story he stabed me in the arm

Not from my izula but from a brand new RAZOR SHARP Sog knife. I was doing stupid shit and still not quit sure how it happend, but it went to the bone in my pointer finger. I never even felt it.

I got stabbed in the left butt cheek during a bar fight in Chatan (Okinawa) about 20yrs ago. I'll spare you a picture of the scar.

Never found out who did it, but I still have the knife. It's some sort of serrated SOG folder. The tip broke off when it hit my pelvis.

I just got home from the E.R. . My Izula bit me bad, I was cutting away at some bushes and sure as hell slipped and split my left ring finger open straight to the bone (typing this one-handed haha :o). I had to wait 40 minutes for my parents to get to the park so I cut off a piece of my jeans and stopped the bleeding, it bled about 20 minutes, I found some potting material(the kind that is used for keeping weeds out and such) and a small stick and made a makeshift splint, then I went to one of the bathrooms and washed it out as much as I could. When my mom finally got there we got to wait in the E.R. for two hours before we were seen and the doctor said I did a pretty good job splinting it up. So now i'm finally home with a half cast and 6 stitches, Izula did its job, cut anything in its way.

Splint and cast? How did you break the bone?

Forever ago, In middle school i took a cut to the back of my forearm defending against a cheap dull balisong. It wasn't horribly deep and the cut only need stitches along the first inch or two. Still have a bit of a scar. I think the kid was only trying to scare me and wasn't committed to the attack, hence it not being bad. But it was my instinct to defend. After the cut I grabbed a fire extinguisher off the wall and hosed down the rest of his group and then "threw" it at him as he ran away. I missed. A lot. Those things are heavy for a kid. But never had much trouble in school after all that. Went to nurse and claimed it happened on a sharp edge of a locker and that was that.

Oddly, it started my fascination with balisongs... go figure. :)

I didn't break the bone but because it's a high stress area they decided to half cast it to immobilize it to avoid infection. I splinted it myself because I wasn't sure what else to do with it while I was waiting. I haven't liked balisongs ever since a neighbor pulled one on me and i suffered a decent sized cut to the abdomen but yea my Izula likes blood haha

Oh gotcha. Sorry to hear that man.

A few years ago I was in ICU after a bad car accident, while I was there they brought in a dude with multiple stab wounds to the lower abdomen. We both ended up in a room together over night after they moved us out of ICU. It was horrible. The poor guy was screaming all night long and his body was constantly farting. I don't know where on his body the gas was escaping from but the room smelled rotten (a totally rancid but indescribable smell). Maybe some one with some medical background can shed some light on that? It was a long night.. Even longer for him, I'm sure.

the blade shaved my thumb, the tip played around in my my knuckle a little bit.

and...

The sak wasn't the cause of the cut, long story, but i thought it'd make a good picture lol

Yeah, I was lucky that it was only a slash on my abdomen. I have been stabbed and can assure you that it really sucked. In the E.R. in the bed next to me with a guy who had been stabbed 6 times and shot twice, he was getting his staples and stitches removed, looked horrible, and that was three weeks after the incident.

Its really easy to forget how dangerous knives are. I oftentimes play with my knives while I'm watching TV etc.. and never stop and think that if I mess up Im going to be needing some stitches. Not an ESEE knife but I got a brand new swamp rat M9 yesterday with a crazy sharp edge and wasnt really paying attention while I put the cardboard sheath on it and sliced my hand in two places. Nothing a little pressure and a couple band aids couldn't fix but it was scary to realize just how easy it is to get hurt when handling knives, especially huge bowies. Ive only cut myself once badly enough to need stitches and that was with a kitchen knife. The skin on my finger is still lopsided to this day.

Its cliche but you always have to be really careful when using blades. There is alot of stuff that can go wrong. I almost poked myself in the eye with a log i was batoning with the other day. You just never know.

I worked at a butcher shop for a few years and you would not imagine how many people got stitches in a one year period.

I actually thought it would be alot more but these guys use razor sharp knives daily and get pretty good at it.

I've had my share of cuts and truely respect the blade.

Somewhere above someone wrote about keeping sharp kitchen knives out of the drain when doing dishes, and I couldn't agree more. Kitchen knives are freaking evil! haha

+1! Well said.

Also anyone else ever notice that like 90% of the knife cut threads are from izulas? I see an "Izzy bit me" thread at least once a week. They are blood thirsty little suckers. I think I'll stick with the 5.
