Have you ever been cut?

Back in late 2008, I was just getting into my training for Nami-Ryu, and I had just received the go to use live blades during kata. Well, being the inexperienced guy I was, tried to do a fast noto ( resheathing of the blade after a kata ) and my 28 1/2" Bugei blade sliced almost a half inch into my left hand between my thumb and forefinger. I actually never felt the cut, it wasn't until my hand felt wet did I realize what I had done. Surprisingly, I just cleaned off the blade with my right hand, quickly oiled it to prevent the blood from oxidizing the steel, then wrapped my hand up really nice and tight. No medical attention required because it was such a clean cut, and no arteries or tendons were hit ( thankfully ), but it definitely renewed my respect for anything with an edge.

I think that knives today require more careful handling than those common say 20 years ago. when the common pocket knives were buck and swiss army. those could be made to be very sharp, but they came from the factory very dull by todays standards. You could get away with the edge glancing against your hand sometimes. But todays blades, spyderco, benchmade, ect. If you slip up you are getting cut.

I've never had a really bad cut. Well, needed 4 stiches when i cut myself with my Vic Tinker when i was a young lad. I was whittling a stick and I looked away but didn't stop moving the knife.

This wasn't a knife, but it was a sharp object...
I know a guy who was throwing a porcelain toilet into a large dumpster.
He hoisted it over his head to get it up and over. It clipped against the edge and shattered. A large piece fell and sliced the entire length of his forearm. He lost a lot of blood...a wound like that has the potential to be lethal.

Be wary not just of sharp things, but of objects that could break and become sharp things.

My worst was cutting into the side of my thumb while carving some balsa wood with a SAK. Luckily didn't require stitches but it probably could have used a couple.

So Jeff, you might want to start including a warning with the Izulas. I'm just happy if was able to wrap mine without incident. I didn't realize I was in such peril until after I read this thread. :D
