Have you Ever given a knife away?

hundreds, various types, i have collected for 40 plus years, I have done a lot of shows. I keep a wooden cigar box with me always in car, or at show. Depending on the person , or child if they show interest and the adult says yes I will give them a EDC in great shape, always cleaned, always lubed, always sharp. I tell them if we meet again I would like to see the knife. I have had people from 3-4 states away show me a knife 2-3 years later. Why because I grew up poor as dirt, and when I saw my first Boker, At Ed Sains feed store 50 years ago, I worked all summer for that knife mowing yards. When I had the money, Mr. Sain counted it to the penny, handed me the Boker and Put the money back into the paper sack. Mr sain died over 20 years ago , I lived 600 miles away,, I attended his service, and that same, still NIB Boker was placed inside his coffin, and you guys here are the first to ever hear about it. Knives, as well as other things are just pcs of metal, but they can bring life to so many.

Of all the knives I've bought, I've probably given away at least 25% of them.

The first knife I ever gave away was the first gift I ever gave my current girlfriend, a rainbow Kershaw Chive. Everyone thought I was a freak for doing that but she loved it, and still has it. That was about 5 years ago. I also gave her a SAK a little while ago

I also gave away a SOG Trident, Kershaw Chill, and Esee Izula 2 to three different friends. I liked all of those knives, and initially bought them with the intent on using them, but for whatever reason they saw little to no use. Either another knife fulfilled their roles, or the role was never applied. I don't regret giving them away, to me it seems a shame to have a knife sit idly in a drawer, collecting dust. However the one I miss the most is definitely the Izzy 2. I could have used the Izula (there is always a use for an Izula, right?), but my friend needed a knife and it was the perfect knife for him. I'm glad that he now uses it pretty much every day. Maybe one day I'll get another Izula though :positive:

Kershaw Boa with S60V steel. It was before how I really knew how to sharpen a very wear resistant steel. I now regret it. Now that I know what I'm doing, I have sharpened that same knife I gave away several times and it really takes a beating before going dull. Takes a high shine and is a very aggressive cutter. The guy I gave it to offered to give it back but that'd just make me feel worse than having given it away to begin with.

Just a couple days ago, I sold 5 high end william henry damascus model t10s for $4550 to a guy who yesterday took them to his brother who is dying in the hospital and let him pick whichever one he wanted. His brother took 45 minutes handling each one, and picked out his favorite. I shipped overnite cause the guy wasn't sure how long his brother is gonna last. His brother coded shortly after getting the knife and he called me today from the hospital thanking me for overniting them. His brother recovered and is hanging in there for now. His brother if and when he passes plans to give the knife to his best friend.
great story, thanks for sharing. Hope the brother sticks in there a lot longer. I'm talking years.

I guess I have given 3 knives away.

1st one was a SOG flash i which I gave to a buddy of mine while we were on a fishing trip. He is not a knife guy and thought it would be good for him as an EDC, though I doubt he carries it on a regular basis.
2nd was a Buck small pocket lock back. nothing special by any means. I gave it to my sister who was going to need it to cut some paracord that was used to tie down a bunch of lawn furniture in the back of her pickup. she was transporting that stuff to our family owned lake house up north.
3rd was a SOG Twitch 2 that I tucked into my step-dad's suit jacket pocket on the day of his funeral. Figured he would need one on the other side...

I was glad to give those gifts for very different reasons. I was glad to share a cool knife with my buddy cause I felt he needed something like that. I was glad to give one to my sis cause it's something she didn't have of her own and it was born out of necessity. Last one was sharing a part of me, for all time, with someone that I loved that passed all too soon (pancreatic cancer). Each instance made me happy for different reasons, but was glad to do it.

I've given away about a dozen Delica's to family members and friends, it's a gift they can use and will always remember who gave it to em!

Also gave my old man an Umnumzaan, he loves it and it always makes me smile to see it in his pocket

Delica is a good gift, simple and useful.

I've given away quite a few. Kershaw Clash, Cyclone, SOG Mini Vulcan, Knockout, a couple others to friends and family. Given away a couple here, most recently a ZT 0550.

I like to share the appreciation for knives as much as I can.

Recently ordered a Spyderco Pacific Salt for a buddy of mine who lives on the CA coast up north.
He's an organic farmer of sorts (:P) and works in very humid conditions, so I thought it would be perfect for him.

Plus, I must admit, it's a selfish attempt on my part to get him interested in my hobby.

Over the years I've probably given well over a hundred knives away. These range from small inexpensive traditionals, to a large Sebenza last Christmas to my best friend. My 'go to' give away knives right now are Spyderco Delicas, and Buck Vantage Pros. I keep a couple extra NIB around all the time specifically for that reason. If I'm in a particularly giving mood, I'll just unroll all my Spydiepacs and let someone take their pick. It always make me feel good to give one away, especially when I see the person using it sometime later.

I regularly give knives away under all types of circumstances. I keep a regular stash of new, decent quality pocket knives around for this purpose. Kershaws, Bucks, SAKs etc. A lot of people, especially those that are not knife nuts don't really know what a good knife is. I enjoy doing it and consider it education. It amazes me how much joy people get from receiving one. A friend of my son's from college reminded me of a small lock back Kershaw DWO I'd given him that I didn't even remember doing. Told me he carries it and uses it almost daily for something. I've been giving my son, now 22, knives since he was about 7. Gave him a ZT for Christmas this year and actually was thinking it was a little silly, that maybe he'd outgrown the process. He loved it and said "It wouldn't be Christmas without a new knife." I notice him using and carrying the ZT for outdoor work and just generally playing with it at home. I've given knives to friends deploying in the military. Just gave one to a bud that retired after 30 years in the army, another small Kershaw which he loves. I give them to hunting and fishing buddies, co-workers, guys that have done work on our house. Seems to mean more to most than a six-pack would. I gave my wife a SAK when we first met 25+ years ago. She hiked the Grand Canyon with it, just replaced it with a smaller model I gave her. She also has a mini Buck 425 from those early days. I've got a nephew that is 40 that is the kind of guy that is meticulous about his stuff. He probably has a dozen knives I've given him over the years dating back to when he was 10. I had a very early brand new Spyderco Endura in a box stashed away for years. Gave it away to this woman I knew about a year ago because she knew exactly what it was. She was completely blown away. She is a pretty, athletic bodied, striking looking girl with long red hair. She told me she wore it outside her dress one night when she got dressed up to go out on the town. WOW.

I love giving knives away and would love to receive them as well, but I've gotten a reputation as a giver rather than receiver.

The other day, I was showing a buddy some new knives, and he picked up my sodbuster. I told him that was nothing new, I'd had that for a long time. He seemed to like it, I could see it in his eyes. So I asked him, "You like that one?"

"Yeah it's really cool!"

"Keep it."

I regularly give away knives to friends, family and total strangers (giveaways on BF). It's a gift that keeps on giving. Quite gratifying and satisfying for all parties involved.

I gave my dad a tenacious on his birthday 2 years ago to replace the crappy Gerber he'd been carrying for years. He was floored by it and texted me just about every week for a while to tell me something else he loved about it. Cool feeling giving away a knife to someone you know will appreciate it.

I gave my best friend a large Buck Vantage Pro as a wedding gift and I gave my uncle a Case Peanut when he turned 60. I also gave a coworker a Vic Tinker when he mentioned he could use a new knife. It was nice to give them really good knives.

I have given several knives away throughout my life and I am only 29! When I was 17 I gave my delica to my sister. In college, I gave away a crkt crawford falcon. I gave away a spyderco stretch also. and a cs voyager xl, I gave to an Irish lumberjack that I worked with. I gave away a benchmade 940 to my best friend. I gave a Emmerson Persian Folder to my mom to use as sd but I think she lost it :-(.

Gave a Tenacious to a friend and have regretted it ever since. He put it in his cupboard drawer and last week while looking for a lighter I saw it's still collecting dust in there.

Yes. I also give away personally owned firearms to mature family and friends.

I like the idea of providing a family[or close friend] an heirloom while I am still alive.

Last a TR4 to our 53 year old son for Christmas..started with a Boy Scout knife when he was a Cub.

It's all just stuff..and mine so can do with it as and when I wish.

Best.

I have given a couple knives away. I gave my brother a spyderco 3, partially serrated with the coated blade. I gave my girlfriend a stainless plain edge native 3. When my good friend graduated from the training program at his law enforcement job I gave him a matriarch. I recently gave my friend and coworker a manix 2 lightweight. I gave another buddy a yojimbo 2 and a manix 2 in all black.

I have owned many spydercos...

Yes. Last Christmas.

Now the ones that were stolen from me, I can only wish bad things for the perpetrators.

1: An UZI folder, maybe the "Commander" model? It was USA-made, although by United Cutlery if I remember right.

2: No regrets. The knife had some issues, and I gave it to my brother with the understanding that he'd either fix it or throw it away if it couldn't be fixed.

3: The liner lock wouldn't engage with any amount of tweaking, as though the dimensions were actually off by a fraction of an inch. I bought it from CDNN, and they not only immediately sent a replacement but told me to keep the original to do with as I saw fit. I gave it to my brother who is a bit more handy than I am, and he was able to grind a little bit of the liner off so that it locked up correctly. He now carries the knife frequently.
