I've given 5 knives away, that I can remember.
1. Kershaw Skyline, to a friend. Felt great to give a friend a tool that he will be able to use, and also something that he will mentally connect with me. Also, although he had a few ZT's at the time, he didn't have any Kershaws so I opened him up to that brand in a way.
2. ZT 0550, to a co-worker. He and I worked together for 3 years, and he left the job to take a new one that would likely be a lifetime career. I gave him the blade as a "going away" gift, as well as a "new start" blade. He was always more of a traditional type of blade guy, so it was cool to see him open up to a more modern style folder.
3. Kershaw Leek, to a co-worker. A co-worker/friend of mine was telling me a story about a Scallion that he had that he was unhappy with because it kept opening in his pocket with the Speedsafe, and the blade lock feature had broken. I had a combo-edged DLC coated Leek that I had carried for a while when I was in the same position he had been in, so I sharpened it, de-assisted it and gave it to him one night before his shift started. Since then he's bought another Leek and a Skyline, as well as a few Spydercos.
4. Kershaw Chive, to my sister. A christmas gift. She always had been interested in any knife I had been carrying, so I figured it would be a good starter blade for her. She really enjoyed it.
5. A long time ago, bought some kind of Gerber with a large hole in the pivot area where your index finger would go. Gave it to my stepdad as a christmas gift. I thought it was the latest, greatest in knife technology (back then, I shopped knives from the Wal-Mart display case).
6. Spyderco Dragonfly 2 (Pink), for my fiance. I'm actually waiting on this one to come in the mail right now. It was a backup Valentines Day gift. I had already gotten her some of her favorite french perfume and lotion - so she got what I knew she wanted. I followed it up by getting her what I wanted to get her. It will be a few days late.
I have a few more on my list for future purchases, a couple friends and co-workers, my dad, my father in law and brother in law. I really enjoy giving knives as gifts.
It's my way of saying I'm interested that your life is easier, and a sharp tool makes it just that.
