Have you seen the new Benchmade Neil Blackwood folder?

I had no idea that there was going to be such a knife. This knife is going to be a winner. The only thing holding it back might be the price. This knife is bound to be in Benchmades Gold series.

Nope, it is a Blue line knife. Honest!

I hope the blade is 4" instead of the 4.3" that has been rumored. Not that I wouldn't mind a 4.3" blade, but it would be illegal here in Tennessee. :(

Not to say unpleasant things, but I know that BenchMade has an arrangement with Sal Glesser for the use of the SpyderHole opening system and I wonder if it has been extended to coveer this knife.

Well, the "rumors" are from a very reliable source...I doubt they are incorrect.

I don't want to derail the thread, but how can Spyderco own the rights to a hole? Not only that, Neil's custom version uses the same sort of opening system.

*shrug*

How does BM plan to market it with the round opening hole? Did they license it?

Good question - maybe Neil can chime in on this one.

I thought Saddam had the patent on the SpyderHole... ;)

BM HAD a deal w/ Spyderco on the "hole" (AFCK & Ascent, etc). I think I recall reading that that deal has expired. (The newer AFCK's have the oval hole IIRC.) I think Blackwood had his own deal w/ Sal & Co. in re: the "hole" on customs- don't know if BM has picked this up for the new stuff from Neil.
Stunning knife btw. It's on the short list.

My udertanding about the Spyderhole is that Spyderco has it as a registered trademark. Doing that gives them the "rights" to it.

Now, this is just a guess, but I believe the use of three holes makes it different enough to be okay because it is different than the trademark "Spyderco roundhole".

What a beautiful knife ! And in addition with a 4” blade :

I have to redefine my wish list priorities… :D

I believe that the holes should not relate to Spyderhole. Blackwood knives (fixed and folder) are also known to have this kind of holes. For example, the skirmish. What I see BM is doing is to provide some kind of the mid tech version of the almost-impossible-to-get folder. That's only my opinion.

Saddam did not patent the Spyderhole ! Saddam had a patent for a neighbor goat's A$$hole. :D

Meaning: only he can use it !!

Agreed, except this is a completely production version, not a mid-tech.

I don't want to say based on just a picture, but this has the potential to be the hottest production folder of the year.

No doubt about that!

I'll post more once I have mine! :D

omg, that knife is NICE! It just bumped everything else on my list down one! I'm actually hoping it'll be 3.5" blade so that I can EDC it. 4.3" is way too big. A regular 4.3 and a mini 3.5 would work out perfectly... And someone spill the beans! What are the specs on this baby

One hole or three, that is copying Sal's ideas, not that everyone else in the world isn't doing it. It just pi**es me of to see one reputable company apparently ripping off another. I feel the same way about the Gerber and Buck models that I have seen that use opening holes of whatever shape and I only hope that they have the honesty to pay Sal for the rights. I expect sh*t like that from others, but not from the major players. But, then, maybe I expect too much.

spyderco only has the rights to the round hole now. It's been decided a long time ago that any other shape hole can be used by others. The three round hole thing i'm not sure about but i'm pretty sure neil and/or BM has something worked out with Sal. Maybe sal can chime in on this subject.
