Ooh that looks very tasty :thumbsup: And a good looking Frontier :) It strikes me they are so sturdy. I haven't seen blades so thick at the spine in a stockman before, but I don't own a lot of this size either. It's a joy to use.

LOL! Only if you promise not to disclose how frikandels are made (did you see Dikkenek?). Starts with a G, ends with a M.:D

I didn't see Dikkenek and now I'm not sure I want to :p

It must be me, but I'm afraid I'm still drawing blanks on the bad language.

Just a short post to let you know all is well.

I have been using Scotty in and around the house, haven't used another pocket knife since it arrived.

Nothing extreme, just everyday stuff like opening packages and cutting strings for the tomato and pepper plants.

I ISKRA Somehow we ate stamppot twice this week :eek:o_O One with spinach and the other with endive (I hope that's the correct translation) and beans.

Aha, I knew it! :D  We have a similar dish in Slovenia, called matevž: potatos and beans mashed together. But if I'm honest, stamppot with endive is a bit beyond me. Together with sweetened salad it gives me somewhat of a culture shock ...

Scotty has been here for a little over three weeks now. Last week we went cycling and I took a few pictures to show you a bit of our surroundings.

Because Holland is pretty flat, we don't have any mountains and you'd probably laugh at our hills, a lot of transportation can be done by water. This takes some pressure from our already busy roads.

On our way to a small windmill we spotted a swan with her young:

A few minutes later we arrived at the Noordermolen, a small windmill from 1888 that was employed to pump water from lower areas to higher ground so that everyone could keep their feet dry.

Who can spot Scotty? :)

I'm not sure about the translation of this part of the windmill, maybe 'jackscrew'? By rotating it, water can be transported from lower to higher ground:

Just a few cows :):

In the distance we spotted some daredevils climbing a tower in the absence of mountains:

Afterwards we had 'pannenkoeken', what's your favorite Jolipapa Jolipapa ? :p

In case you're wondering, the last one is ragoût, one of my favorite toppings :D

And this is what happens when you're taking pictures instead of paying attention to your daughter decorating her pannenkoek

315 315 , I will be sending Scotty on its way next week. As august is getting close, where would you like me to send it? To you or to another member?

Cheers!

zolthar zolthar :  any of these pannekoeken would be ok, I see I have yet many varieties to discover! :) The pictures recalls when we used to visit my (recently late) friend and his wife in the Drenthe, had a Grolsch or two while playing a game of schule (not sure of the correct spelling).
Cows reminded also when on the road back home on the Norton, a wasp went down my neck under the leather jacket and stuck my back before wifey could neutralize her permanently. Those Dutch wasps have a darn sharp sting! :(:D

I certainly don't want to interfere in 315 315 ' and zolthar zolthar 's choice, but @dcpritch expressed his interest a bit too late when I forwarded the knife. I'm sure Minnesota has picturesque things to show and would be a nice step before reaching home-sweet-home. Just my 2cts. :)

ps Can you please tell them engineers and architects who designed/built the tower that after all it 's def not a good idea to go at the coffee shop before starting the job!:D

I’m sure there are plenty of nice Green Bay Packer fans in Minnesota....:D Grandad’s 102nd birthday is August 2nd so there’s time for a few more adventures.

And stellar photos of Holland too:thumbsup::thumbsup:

As it happens, one of the folks I worked with a fair bit in grad school was a Dutch lady. My research involved a lot of analyzing elevation models (my research focused on landscape reconstruction for areas that are now underwater since the end of the last ice age), and her research was on understanding the effects that different possible sea-level rise scenarios would effect the Netherlands. We teamed up on building computer models and doing some programming so that different scenarios could be more easily run. So I had a chance to become fairly familiar with that elevation model image of the Netherlands during grad school.

You live in a very interesting place (really, most places people live are very interesting once you start to dig, that is why I do the work I do). I appreciated getting the chance to think about sea-level change on a human scale both spatially and chronologically. When you are trying to imagine how landscapes changed over tens of thousands of years it can be easy to lose sight of how big those changes could be to folks experiencing them in real time.

The travels of Scotty sure are entertaining and thought provoking.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your friend JP.

That sounds as quite the adventure, trying to ride a motorcycle with a wasp under your jacket!

It's called sjoelen, it's been a while since I played it. I played jeu de boules more recently:D

I've been in contact with David dcpritch dcpritch , Scotty will fly to Minnesota next :cool:

What a coincidence, it's a small world isn't it :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I totally agree with you, most places people live in are very interesting. That's one of the things I like about the porch next to the knives and great people, to see where and how others live their lives.

Scotty will fly to Minnesota next

I am really looking forward to having Scotty tour the Northland with me, though I doubt I will have anything as interesting as the Dutch scenery just shown. My middle son lives with his wife in Amsterdam, on the Prinzengracht just across the canal from Westerkerk, and using their place as a home base to explore the Netherlands has become our favorite travel pastime.

This is something I've never seen or heard of :p but I'll keep my eyes out. Actually I was raised in Dallas and have always been a Cowboys fan, which provides lots of entertainment when the 'Pokes and Vikes play on Thanksgiving Day.

I want to be very careful to get Scotty back to you in time for you big event at the beginning August and will be in touch with you about that. All the best, DAVID

It's like every porch member has a link to the Netherlands :) I'm looking forward to your tour of the Northland!:thumbsup:

Scotty arrived in Northern Minnesota today, fresh off the boat and in great shape from The Netherlands. Scotty was accompanied by all kinds of goodies, including stroopwafel, one of my absolute favorite Dutch treats! Thank you, Mark.
IMG_7928.jpg IMG_7929.jpg IMG_7930.jpg

It didn't take long for Scotty to get involved in the local scene. First we went to to lunch at Gordy's Hi-Hat, a locally famous burger and shake joint that made the national scene by being featured on the TV show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, hosted by Guy Fieri. Gordy himself waited on Scotty and me - he started the place back in 1960 and is now 92 - and he gave me this fine hat to send along when the knife heads home. Thanks Dan & Gordy! It was blazing hot today (by Northern Minnesota standards - hit 90F!), but we sat outside on the porch and enjoyed a Bacon Deluxe and some onion rings.
IMG_7933.jpg IMG_7934.jpg

We live in the country and don't get regular garbage service, so Scotty accompanied me on my regular stop at the local landfill where I dropped off (for $3) some garbage and used motor oil. I bet Scotty has never seen such a smelly place!!!
IMG_7935.jpg IMG_7936.jpg

That's it for today, but stay tuned - more to come.
Thanks again Mark and all the gents before you!
DAVID

Any chance ol Scotty is going to get in on a fish fry? There’s bound to be a crappie or two in the state somewhereo_O And I love how the main blade is starting to look!!

Wow Scotty is off with a running start:) I'm glad it arrived safely! That burger looks very tasty and for the landfill, well I'm glad there's no smell included with the photo:thumbsup: I can't imagine a place here in the Netherlands without regular garbage service, probably because it's so densely populated. If you get lost in the woods you just have to walk in a straight line and will return in civilization within a few hours tops.

Looking forward to your next post!:thumbsup:

The fish fry is not guaranteed but could definitely happen. I sure hope it does!

We are the opposite of densely populated! Last evening a couple of deer were standing by the road but I couldn’t get Scotty out of my pocket and take the pic in time. Here’s a consolation prize of Scotty at a small lake near home.

Our youngest son is moving next month to Austin, Texas for his first job out of college. He needs furniture for an apartment so we started last night refinishing our old kitchen table - the price is right and he learns some skills along the way. Scotty was helping out last night scraping paint and varnish from hard to get places, cutting sandpaper, etc. A nice knife and very useful, kept sharp by prior users.

We were up early this morning, checking muskrat and waterfowl activity in the bay. My dog Parker isn't quite sure what to make of our new three-legged friend named Scotty

It is strawberry season here and last weekend we picked quite a few. These are the last ones remaining after making pies and jam:
IMG_7959.jpg

I thought it would be good to re-orient Scotty's olfactory sense after yesterday's experience at the landfill. Scotty seemed to really like the mint patch.
IMG_7958.jpg

If I'm not mistaken, each blade I closed after the mint made a distinct, different noise. At first it was muffled and unrecognizable, but after a couple tries it began to sound like Moe ... Hee ... Toe. I tried opening then closing them faster and faster, and finally got this: Mohito. Just wondering whether prior caretakers may have introduced Scotty to any Caribbean distillates; it would certainly make sense given Scotty's affinity for mint.

You live at a beautiful place David, thanks for showing!
Haha, my dog Parker enjoys it far more than I do! But thank you for the nice remark. I’ve traveled some and seen there are so many great places in the world that I think God places in each of our hearts an appreciation for the particular place we call home. If it were otherwise we would constantly be pining for things seen elsewhere, no matter how nice it is at home.

Beautiful country to be sure. Parker looks like he’s a pretty relaxed old pup...

He’s nine years old now but pretty trim, still chasing deer, geese, beaver and the like. Spends a fair bit of time in the lake every day unless it’s frozen.

After a day at the office we got home and continued work on the cherry wood table, getting down to bare wood. Scotty’s coping blade has been especially helpful.

After sweating through two hours of sanding it was time for a break. Skilled at cutting (but not so much at muddling), Scotty helped with gathering mint and slicing limes on the way to a mojito
