Help me decide which AFFORDABLE knife to buy please!

I know it's probably a hard question to answer as some of it will come down to preference, but what do you think is a better buy the CRKT Drifter or the Ontario Utilitac II? :)

Sorry, I have no experience with the Utilitac II. Not to keep bombarding you with every knife out there but I forgot to mention the Kershaw Chill too.

For sure this has become much harder than expected.. at first I was stuck between 3 knives.. now it's gone to like 15 lol! Then when I think i've found the right one, another one gets thrown at me which looks very promising! :p

Heh, another good option. Its a bit more of a gentleman's folder though (thinner, smaller, lighter, a bit more formal looking). Not a bad thing, just not sure what the OP is looking for.

And to the OP. The nice part here is that none of the ones you've been recommended are bad at all. You just have to choose what looks/feels best to you, and what you want to use the knife for.

Personally, when someone asks me what low cost knife they should get, I say the Ontario RAT 2, because I think it is a good example of what a general purpose pocket knife should be. But, you might like different things than me.

In short, I think the Drifter, the Utilitac II, or the chill would all make for excellent knives for you. You just have to choose :p.

Yeah man, i'm just trying to find anything I can now which can make one out of the two knives a better option for me, I noticed that the CRKT only has a 2.7inch blade or so, which means it can legally be carried around in the UK, so that might be a benefit, whether that law is included for people under the age of 18 I don't think so lol. But if I keep the knife for 2 years+ that means I could in fact legally carry it in public which is a huge benefit. I was going to ask for one for my 16th birthday which is next month but this thread has got me to excited to wait so I think I may just get one as soon as I decide! Your help has been greatly appreciated considering I signed up to to another forum the same time as signing up to this one and got 0 responses.. I was really worried I wouldn't get any on here either, however this seems like a great community which I hope will help and progress my knowledge about knives so one day I can help noobs like me who are in the same situation! :)

I'll keep you posted on which one I buy as long as I don't spot another appealing one which makes me re-consider haha! Thanks again you guys are awesome :) :p

Its all good, I remember doing the same thing when I started out.

One thing to think about though, is to make sure you check what your laws are over there in the UK. I know that in some (all?) parts of the UK, its illegal to have a folding knife with a lock, which really changes what you can carry.

The Ontario RAT 2 and ESEE Zancudo are both under 3in as well, if that is important to you :).

oh sugar I didn't realise that, was going to read up on laws in-depth before I bought a knife haha, well tbh maybe it was just me trying to find an excuse to buy one over the other as I don't really have a reason to carry a knife in public so I probably wouldn't anyway

I think I want the CRKT Drifter but i'm struggling to find it for a good price in the UK.. on US website's I can find them for like $20 (£12) whereas here in the UK the cheapest I can find is like £30.. do you think maybe I should sign upto the UK Forum and ask in there? :);)

It isn't even close to being true.

I don't know the brand but my brother has one of the Chinese Sebenza style rip offs. There is some differences in placement of pocket clip and the cut out on the frame lock is exterior instead of interior. It has 420 handles and the blade is 9cr18mov. The size, feel, fit, everything else is exact. The blade holds a hell of a edge. Yeah it's a rip offish design kinda like a small Sebenza but it's obviously not one. In hand it's just as slippery when wet and too small for serious work just like the small Sebenza. Doing some pretty demanding work like opening a can of beans it holds up great, the blade stays sharp. For a dedicated worker and if there is no attempt to claim to be a CR then why not. It's just a rip off of the design which is solid and simple. So simple it can be copied with a high degree of quality with the same working attributes. It is HEAVY compared to my Sebenza though and don't do anything better except leave more money to buy many more knives.

He said I wouldn't use mine to open a can, so I did. I was pretty surprised the steel can didn't even hurt the edge on either knife and both are still no play tight.

Just because it's a lower cost designed like a Sebenza don't mean it's a worthless piece of junk. It carries as easily and cuts just as good, not everyone has $300.00 plus to spend on a bean can opener.

My 2 cents... I have had good experience with 8cr13mov. Easy to sharpen and maintains an edge well enough. Very good user steel. I have purchased 5 or 6 sanrenmus. Each have had excellent fit and finish, especially for the cost. The enlan el01 is one of my favorite knives. Ganzo rips off benchmade. Ontario rat1, fantastic. Anything Ontario is great. Often overlooked is the Byrd g10 cara cara. That knife is very underated. In a lot of ways I like it better than my endura. So many good choices... Don't take my word for it though, get one, or 5 of these for yourself, they are so inexpensive and you won't regret it. Warning though, they are like a gateway drug into the world of higher priced, benchmade spyderco knives... Soon you will find yourself sucked into the swirling vortex of knife addiction :)

That sounds like the Sanrenmu to me! I heard similar reviews on youtube saying the same thing.

Sanrenmus seem to have a great rep! what's your opinion on the CRKT Drifter? and I already feel like i'm addicted before i've even got one lol! spent most of my day searching and trying to find the best knife I can ;)

I'm sure within a few months all my £££ will magically vanish and suddenly out of nowhere i'll have a loads of knives on my doorstep ;)

I wasn't thinking about that either. We may have switch this over to a slip-joint discussion. In which case I have many recommendations also. :D

Re. The crkt drifter: to small for my preference and I very much don't like tip down carry. I think there are much better handle options than the stainless steel handles of the drifter. Mind you, I do like the crkt ripple design. In general other than a ripple, I have stayed away from crkt products mainly because there are so many better offerings out there IMO.

A discusion of this which is not appropriate here depends greatly on which "Chinese Sebenza style rip off" you are talking about which you do not know. If it is a SRM 710 then I agree to a certain degree. It is an okay $7 knife. Not even close to a sebenza though and branded SRM so it gets a pass on the rip off thing. But to compare it in anyway to the real deal is completely idiotic. The Sebenza has much beter everything. No argument can be made otherwise. "exact same"? Please...

Now, if it is a higher end rip off made to be more close to a Sebenza than who ever owns one is supporting counterfeits and has no place here or in this hobby. There opinion on knives matters not to me.

Just because it's a lower cost designed like a Sebenza don't mean it's a worthless piece of junk.

I, nor anyone else in this thread ever said this. You are defending against something that was never said. Why is that? I own knives from every spectrum of the price continuum. I like some of my inexpensive knives as much as my fancy knives. I am not delusional enough though to think a $7 SRM is the "exact same" as a CRK.

It carries as easily and cuts just as good, not everyone has $300.00 plus to spend on a bean can opener.

It will not cut as long. Sorry, thems the facts kid. Also, actual can openers are very inexpensive and are in nearly every grocery store. I would suggest that for opening a can of beans. If you must carry a can opener with you at all times, might I suggest a SAK or a good MT.

yeah man that's the one, it's a rip off of the Sabenza but i've heard it's not from far the quality of a Sabenza, whether this is true or not I really don't know. However as it will be my first ever knife i'm fairly positive i'm going to be impressed either way as I won't be able to compare it too anything other than my rip off victorinox which can't even cut a piece of paper after being sharpened.. thanks for the recommendations i'll defo look into them!
Hahahahahahahahahaha! Similar in quality to a sebenza!? Aren't they known for having some of the best tolerances in the world? OMG stop, I can't take it, I'm not even a sebenza fan, nor can I afford one, but I guarantee you that thing isn't even close to being in the same league...Bwahahaha! I can't breath!

OK, sorry for being a jerk, but you gotta know the reality. You can still get a good quality Blade for a.good price. I'd recommend the Byrd line as well. Best quality and fnf I've ever seen for the prices, and not trying to rip off peoples designs either.

i'll be honest I was only looking to spend $30, but if you feel like I need to spend more $$$ to get my money's worth then i'll defo take that advice on board :)

Im not quite sure how strict the laws there are enforced but the UKPK was designed to abide by UK laws. But its completely up to you! :) There are a lot of quality knives for ~$30

I did state I wasn't sure haha, there's really no point in my trying to defend myself here as I did state i'm a complete newbie to this and i'm just learning. I wasn't sure so I thought I would ask? how else was I suppose to find out man. Thanks for the recommendation i'll check em out :)
