Help sought from Zero Thoughts Aficionados in choosing first ZT , please ...

Get the 0562CF first. That is arguably the best jack of all trades ZT. Plus it is one of the best flippers and EDC friendly knife ZT makes. The others kind of have their unique niches and most of them are awesome.

Here are some examples:
ZT 030X= If the 0562 is to dainty for you. I love this model dearly.
ZT 0801= if you want all Ti scales and the best flipping action.
ZT 0620CF= Arguably better than a real Emerson. Just badass!
ZT 0450 or 0770CF if you need smaller and lighter than the 0562cf
etc.... I could go on and on really. Start with the 0562 and then move on to more unique ZT offerings. Just my 2 cents.

Sorry I am late in the game. Currently ZTs of the best value (cheaper than they used to be) include 0770/cf (light), 0620/cf (beefy tanto), 0801 (super smooth and full ti), and 0560/1 (beefy and large). They are all great choices.

I am assuming it was an autocorrect artifact, but I am still chuckling over the thread title "Zero Thoughts Aficianados", and the fact that I cheerfully responded, thereby accepting the moniker. :D

Thanks. I'm considering the 0562CF. However, I wish that someone could explain the difference between the KVT ball-bearing opening on this knife and assisted opening on the other ZTs.

I noticed it awhile ago. I wish that it could be edited as the inquiry might be taken as the work of a troll and therefore not addressed by some people.

BTW : How's the black cat doing ? The lady of the house keeps a tuxedo cat.

Yeah , I know it is not a flipper but I may buy the 0620 for my first ZT. Thanks.

The 0562 has a tiny ball in the lockbar which retains the knife in the closed position. Once you overcome this relatively light detent by exerting pressure on the flipper, the blade swings open smoothly, riding on the (excellent) bearing system in the pivot.

With an assisted ZT, there's a torsion bar inside the knife which exerts pressure to keep it closed. Once you overcome that tension by pressing the flipper, the bar acts like a spring to fire out the blade.

I'm not a fan of assisted knives; I much prefer a smooth, well-designed non-assisted action like the 0562's. Some folks love them, though.

I smile every time I visit the thread. I too enjoy being a Zero Thoughts Aficionado. :D

0562 is my favorite ZT, it's weight, size, ergos, blade shape, action, everything is just right as a really solid work knife.
My other favorite work knife is the Manix XL.

As Dadpool said the pocket clip on it is brilliant.

Does anyone own both the 0562 and 0392? Is there any way to justify paying the extra $200+ for the 0392? The reason I am interested is because I am not a huge fan of cf so the 0562cf doesn't really appeal to me.

At first I thought it might be a troll post until I saw that it was a serious question.

The little black cat in my avatar is dong fine. He made sure I didn't hit the snooze button more than once this morning and spent some quality time chasing a tinsel toy around. We have a total of 4 cats.

I'd avoid the Elmax if you can....loses an edge real fast

Kind of like how this post just made you lose all credibility...

OP I'd recommend a 0770 variant. 0562, 0801, 0808, 0900, 0220 and 0456 are the more medium sized knives like you mentioned. Others to look at on the larger size are the 0620, 0630 Emersons and the deceptively easy carrying and is a lot of knife for the money in my opinion.

Good luck with your decision!

Based on your specifications in your OP, I would recommend the ZT0770CF - Very nice peel-ply CF, and it is larger than the Leek, smaller and slimmer than the 350, and I find it very friendly for everyday tasks.

If you are into the Rick Hinderer designs, then the ZT0562CF is hard to pass up.

Good luck!

best
