Help with contacting Roger Linger

I also want to add that if I see a recommendation for Roger on this forum that I will post a link to this thread so that the potential customer will have this information to help in the decision making process.

Keith,

Let me clarify. When I ordered my knife, Roger asked me for a deposit, which he promptly received. Because I ordered high grade ironwood for scales he wanted me to send him another money order to purchase the parts. He got that. Then in early May, last year, he told me that he is starting to work on my knife and that it should be ready by the end of summer. In that same message he had asked for the final payment which was sent to him without any delays.

You know what happened at the end of summer (nothing).

When I've gotten a hold of him in October (2.5 month late and 0 updates) he told me the sad story about being a one man shop. I didn't push him to give me a deadline, what I asked was along the lines of whether my knife will be ready by next Christmas. I received a reply stating that it won't take THAT long and that it will be ready by the end of winter.

I've repeatedly asked for a status update during the course of last 8 weeks. I received 0 replies.

That's the full story and I got check stubs to prove it.

there are a lot of one man shops here on BF and in the knife world in general. Luckily for the knife community, buyers and makers both, nearly all of them do not have the communication issues apparent in this thread.

In other words, being a one man shop is not a viable excuse. Lots of guys working for and by themselves wouldn't even dream of leaving customers out in the cold for so long.

I wonder what percentage of knifemakers are one man operations? I would think that it would be incredibly high. Being a one man operation is no excuse for poor business practices, including what seems to be terrible communication.

It is also unacceptable to tell a customer to send final payment, give a delivery date of late summer, and then to leave the customer dangling for who knows how long. I shake my head when I see makers that think it is acceptable to treat their customers in such a disrespectful manner. There are hundreds and hundreds of makers that treat there customers properly. There is no need to deal with makers that don't.

In my opinion, and in the opinion of many others, if you run into makers that want full payment before the knife is done, find another maker. A reasonable deposit is okay, full payment in advance is not.

I don't know what kind of legal action you can take, but since it looks like Roger isn't getting back to you, it is probably time to go the legal route. It is really difficult to fathom why he hasn't taken the time to get in touch with you.

Thanks a lot! I'll explore my options with regards to the legal route. God knows, I didn't want it to end this way.

See, this man understands people, and himself. Now if evreyone had this integrity to do whats right no matter how much time, etc. , goes by.

Never have I told someone his knife was finished and then did not ship it after payment received. I think that's a bit far fetched Mr. Roughedges.

Are you referring to the maker? He doesn't seem to understand other people at all. It also doesn't look like he is interested in doing the right thing, only what's best for him.

Hey ishiyumisan,

Do you mind telling us whether your issue with Roger Linger was ever resolved? If so, in what matter? Thanks so much!

I have been having the same communication problems as some of the other folks here. Sent final payment last July. I have had one email since. I have recently changed my address and sent him updated info but I am not sure if he received it or what. I am hoping to get the knife by summer as I have plans for it. I am a very patient guy but I am starting to lose faith. This is my second custom order. My first custom knife was from a different maker. Both experiences have not been pleasant and I doubt I will ever order a custom knife again.....

Wow - when I started this thread I intentionally tried to keep it low keyed. I had hoped that a gentle nudge might get some communication going and ultimately me my knife which has been paid for in full for some time. This is a man's livelihood afterall. I had tried everything from emails, to calling, and PM's on here to no avail. I had even sent a certified letter with the return receipt regarding my situation and still nothing. The legal route seemed to be the only avenue left for me. This is the one thing that I never wanted however and have been trying to avoid.

Through what I can only believe is from the assistance on the good folks on here someone finally got thru to Rodger to get ahold of me. He has since emailed me with an apology and the same assertions he has posted. Does this settle the whole matter well of course not, but at least I have some communication.

I believe that Rodger is an extremely talented knifemaker, but unfortunately no amount of talent justifies this type of situation. I can't answer whether I will get my knife or when, but having been a LEO for 22+ years I do know how to prosecute a case so now it is up to Rodger.

I would like to thank Keith and everyone else who helped for thier assistance, and hope that there is a conclusion to this situation shortly.
