here's what we deal with on a daily basis

Jeff - common sense is very uncommon these days. Customers are so pampered now; and, their expectations are so high that it's hard to please some of the most demanding. You did the right thing with this customer.

I'm an Objectivist, safety. Something you obviously don't understand. I'm thankful for my family, friends, health, etc. My work is my work. It's my life. It's what I do. A man's work is the only thing in life that truly sets one man apart from the other. We don't get it by wishing it to be true or being thankful for it. We get it by working our ass off, being honest, telling the truth and dealing with your fellow man straight up. It wouldn't matter of I was digging ditches, I would be the best damn ditch digger I could be because that's how I'm built. Yes, there are idiots in the world and there will always be idiots. Doesn't mean I have to feel sorrow for them.

I hear this "you don't have a boss" thing from a lot of folks. Obviously you have never been in business for yourself if you think you don't have people you have to answer to.

WOW Jeff. You have my sympathies for what you have to go through. I'm glad I don't have to deal with a hundred emails like that every day.

As I was reading it I kept thinking to myself, "dude, just go out and buy a new fire steel". He just wouldn't give up, sounded like a broken record.

I hope I never do anything as stupid as that.

Keep your chin up man...

Best, Les.

And just to clear up something that was said, I use to be in law enforcement, so whoever assumed I have never been in a service job is jumping to conclusions (no way that could happen here, eh?). Got out of it to start my own business. Now, you can see why RAT has always catered so much to LE. It's a hard job with little reward and low pay for the most part.

I've also dug a helluva lot of ditches, worked as an off-bearer for a sawmill when business wasn't good, worked cows until my clothes were literally soaked through with cow shit and done a helluva lot of dirty hard jobs in my 45 years. But I loved every one of them and put 110 percent into every minute I worked. If anyone thinks I live (or have lived) a "privileged" life, then they absolutely don't know anything about me.

Common sense is an uncommon trait that cannot be trained or schooled. There are those that are educated beyond their intellegence that are difficult and impossible to reason with they usually think with their heart instead of their mind.

I guess the one thing that bothers me the most nowadays is the fact that everyone believes we have to be a service nation indebted to our fellow man. Have you looked at your "fellow man" lately? Most of them wouldn't work in a pie factory, but they believe you owe them part of what you do. If someone is successful then they obviously owe part of their success to the "less fortunate." BULLSHIT! I hate moochers and looters. If it ever gets to where RAT cannot say exactly how they feel, or have to kiss their customer's ass, or have to be less-than-honorable or less-then straight-forward just to sell a knife that most folks don't need anyway, then we're done. Finished. RAT Cutlery will close it's doors and I'll go back to LE, telecom, ditch digging or cowboying...whatever it takes to make a living.....honorably.

Anyone with any sense could obviously see that the guy who emailed me was fighting to get a free rod. To hell with him. Anyone who sets out to give someone that much grief deserves to be exposed for what they are! Those here that don't like that need to find another forum to frequent because you won't like us too well. Just sayin' ;)

Yeah, I thought that statement was pretty strange as well. Like he has an alternate plan in case begging and harranging didn't work...

God knows what goes on in his mind...

His last e-mail was a bit weird......

Watch out Jeff, he's "reserving the other thing for later".....

What Jeff has expressed at least twice in this thread is very clear without any word games or esoteric phrasing...yet some people still don't comprehend it.

It's his business to run, and if he's making a grave customer service mistake, it will reflect on sales and his reputation. People that jump into someone elses business and start giving them pointers bug the shit out of me.

Exactly. Live by the sword, die by the sword. We take full responsibility for our words and actions.

LOL, that was my first thought.

Anyone who has actually worked with customers has seen this before. The basic tactic is to be so insistent and such a pain in the ass, that you'll give them what they want just so they'll stop.

For those that don't understand Jeff's reaction, I notice you are guys that don't post here often, so I'll assume you haven't read Jeff's posts from the beginning of the forum until now.

Knifemaking isn't RAT's primary business. Survival training is. When you are considering taking a customer for survival training (and yes, believe it or not, you DO NOT have to accept a customer in any business), if that person lacks common sense, then you will likely be bringing someone along who won't live through your training. If that happens, you're in for all kinds of shit from people pissing themselves because "you should have known, and not taken them." So it's second nature to Jeff's primary business to weed out customers with no sense.

So will RC be selling replacement fire rods in the future? :D Just kidding, I use a magnesium square w/a firesteel (Walmart $6) and keep my old style RC fire kit in case of an emergency.;)

I Love this place..Its like a normal disfunctional family.:D

Ain't it cool! And the people that understand this get along fine here and in private conversations with us. We have never stifled opinion. We love various opinions and debate. It makes everything around us better. I just refuse to live without reason and common sense though, and would rather those that lack it go away and find someone else's forum/email to haunt and someone else's knives to buy. ;)

If someone founds their own company, would it be professional to make a thread in their subforum calling somebody a douche and a retard?

Would you have the same problem with this fictional person stopping at the local pub and comiserating with his buddies about the douchebag retards he has to deal with at HIS business?

There is a reason the customer sent his request in an email, and it was to remain private.

There is actually no consensus yet on whether e-mailers have a reasonable expectation of privacy, although there have been decisions indicating that there is none.

There is also reason people say "the customer is always right." Of course it doesn't mean they are, but it does mean hold your frustration behind clenched jaws and let it out on the wife at home.

You would prefer that he abuse his wife, or children, rather than call out a douchebag retard on the internet?

Nobody thinks that the creators of the mighty Izula are guilty of some kind of heinous crime, but we would also like to think that if we had an odd customer request, we won't end up as the knife communities laughing stock.

Make your odd requests, but then, accept the answer, whether affirmative or not. Don't be a douchebag retard by arguing with the proprietor, using ridiculous reasonings that make no sense, and then telling him "I'm pissed, but not really. You're a jerk, but not really."

It's just an unconventional approach toward customer relations. Would something like this ever stop me from buying that desert tan izula on my holiday list? Of course not. I just know not to call in and have a special request :D

Answered above.

You have to understand there are people in this world who were not lucky enough to have the insane God-given intelligence level that you possess. Not wanting them to buy? What if for instance everyone in the world were this way, would you go out of business, or fight through the pain of dealing with them?

First off, that's a bit rude. Second, it's his business. He was reasonable, then tolerant, then more than reasonable, then got fed up. Why shouldn't he come here and air his frustrations with his buds? I don't get it.
