HEST/F by Lionsteel

Looks like a nice knife. I passed on it based on the drama but I'm glad Lionsteel came through on the knife. What we need is more quality makers and innovation, not infighting. I think I'll give the Spydie/Lionsteel collab knife a try.

Happy cutting. :)

+1 I didnt really care for all the drama, and seeing as this is DPx's first folder, im giving them some leeway with the tip issue. but i love my hest/f and cant wait for the lionspy. lionsteel have easily moved up to one of my favorite knife manufacturers.

I'm really happy I passed on it. The more time that goes by and the closer I look the less I like it; to where now it doesn't appeal to me at all.

I do like the basic look/lines of the grip but the blade grind is horrible IMO. The proportions just look wrong to me.

The proposed Essee folder looks similar to the HEST but with a really nice blade grind/profile. I'll be looking for that knife when the time comes.

I'm on a list for whenever the LionSpy is released. Looks like a nice folder!

I showed it to a lot of people today and so far the three that have asked about the price have told me that they thought $175 was cheap/very fair for what I got. It has "neat" features for the non-knife enthusiast. I could see Cabelas or Bass Pro branding it for themselves and turning it in the pocket knife market to what the XD has been for Springfield Armory in the handgun market. I show a lot of what I think are super cool knives to people but this one sems to "click" more than others. It's got a meme to it. Certain potential.

The HEST is my design based on what I wanted out there for the real world. There are number of considerations from blade size, to ease of repair, to visual print to even holding an edge. The HEST/F is the folding version of the fixed blade with the caveat that a folder is made up of multiple pieces designed to be light and pocketable. I did the HEST fixed blade with Jeff because I have known him for a decade and he wanted me to design a knife. That knife spawned a lot of other ideas and business development which is underway and involved far more than knives. Jeff and I agreed to split off which is both evolutionary and better for both entities.

Lion Steel was chosen to manufacture the blade because of their experience and demonstrated quality with their SR-1 and many other products. You might remember that Jeff also agreed with the Lion Steel quality but Gianni is very very busy and is only a small shop.

Don't remember any "politics" involved on this forum. but my name and Lion Steel's name on this product means you know where to find us if you have a question and problem and ultimately the experience, the product and the commitment to the customer is where this knife is going to go. I don't know that you have to love Steve Jobs, Mick Strider or any other person who is passionate about their products but I think its clear we have clearly defined our postion and if some folks end up on the outside. That's Ok we don't have enough knives to go around as it is. But maybe we will make another product you might like. The George Foreman or even Bear Grylis example is good. That is called a licensing deal. There is no such arrangement with ESEE or DPx or Lion Steel. We hire industrial designers to take very seasoned users and abusers of products to design new ones. Most of them have never been on camera or written a paragraph but they have very impressive field experience in hostile environments. Wait and see what comes out this year.

As for loving/hating me personally I don't think I have met more than a dozen people on this board and my experience so far is that those that talk tough and say dirty words on the forum side turn out to be pleasant reasonable people on the real life side. In fact some of our fiercest critics are our best customers...go figure. :))

RYP, any idea when this may become more widely available? Would make a great addition to my H.E.S.T. fixed blade. Thanks in advance for your time.

We were cautious on the first run so we built as many knives as we knew we would have customers. Our orders were/are much, much higher. The idea was to see how the product worked and what our customers liked, didn't like about it. If you remember all the LE's sold out in one day.

A second production run will come out this summer with some customer suggested enhancements. Right now Gianni is installing new equipment, hiring more topless production staff and getting all the materials lined up for the HEST/F and the new DPx HEAT. So if you missed out on this run look for early summer. In the meantime we will keep in touch with the dealers to make sure we know if there is stock available.

I notice every once in a while someone will post about what they don't like about their HEST/F and I offer them cash money to send it back to me. No takers so far. But if you want to be on a waiting list contact customerservice@dpxgear.com and we will hook you up with the dealer that has one.

Thanks for your input. So far I think it's a great design. After some real use, I'll post if I'd like to see any changes made.

Thanks to the OP for posting. I've had mine since Saturday and am well pleased with it. Hopefully potential buyers will look past the comments by those who don't and won't own one of these and instead consider the comments/reviews posted by those of us who do.

i think its a bad ass knife, but i can't afford to spend that much on a knife. and i have no idea about what drama is going on, first i heard of it reading this post.

would be nice to see a mass produced run for us lower end economic challenged knife folks.

Just looking at the pictures, I get the impression that both the blades in the HEST/F and the Izula folders are a bit short compared to the handle.
