Hi all, am I the only one that only sees knives as tools?

I've been a book collector for a while now, especially rare books. I don't find it embarrassing, but there are many criticisms of the collector psychology, often coming from collectors themselves. The perception is that collectors are using 'things', and the practice of acquiring these things, to give their lives more purpose -- even if it's apparently frivolous. Collecting supposedly exposes an empty life... and in some cases, that's certainly true. It's still a hell of a lot less destructive than the insulators some use to close up those hollow spots in the human soul -- heroin, joining ISIS, philanthropy. ;)
Same argument could be said of any hobby. I disagree with that argument. Hobbies enrich lives.

I disagree with it too. :) But that's a viewpoint I've seen used as ammo. Sometimes it misses the mark, and other times... That's where some of the judgements and some of the embarrassment can come from. Too much of anything can be toxic, if someone lets it dominate their life. I guess at that point, it's no longer a hobby, it's an obsession.

Well, if it's just a tool, you probably shouldn't be on a forum for this tool.

To me, a shovel is a tool, but I won't join a shovel forum and start threads tell them it's just a tool.

Some people like things and want to talk about it.

But seriously, yes.

I collect G.I. Joes, Skateboards and I guess knives. I get the most use of my knives though but I'm sure there are toy forums and skate forums that have users that would definitely make fun of me because I didn't "use" my collectibles. Actually, that's not entirely true because I do play with some of the Joes with my kids and before I blew my knee out this last Spring, I've been riding skateboards for 30 years.

Anyways,

LOL... all my GI Joes are 'users'. ;) (I like the pics too, but no need for a double post.)
EDIT: Sorry to hear about the knee, man, that's no laughing matter.

Just want to add there is an axe forum on this very site for those of you saying people wouldnt join a tool forum for axes. Seriously, its right there.
Ae far as screwdrivers, shovels and other tools, if I used them as often as I do my knife I for sure would try to find a forum for the best cheap tool like I did ths one to find my much loved l and abused rat1, lansky 440c responder and bk14 or other value awsome knives.

I like the looks of my stuff so I don't like to see scratches or whatever on any of my stuff, even many somewhat ordinary items. Some tools I don't worry about so much such as screwdrivers, hammers, etc. But knives are one of the things I like to look at so I want them to stay relatively clean.

In general though I think many knife enthusiasts don't like scratches because as a group we are very fickle and we buy and sell knives a lot. So we are always thinking about resale and for that reason we want to keep our knives at least like new.

Please re-read the original post. I said "A knife is a tool to me 100%," (notice, I said TO ME).

I also never said I didn't like knives, or that I didn't like to talk about them.

If you don't want me here, just say so.

Op I think it might be best to not take it so personally and move on from this thread. There's lots of opportunities to enjoy the forum or not. But this thread may have just had its run of opinions and sharing.

I especially don't get that. A well used gun is like a patina'd knife. I find they actually look better with use.

I bought a car recently and when my wife told her friend it was black he said "why do you always get cars that show dirt?"(she has a white one) The answer really is because we don't give a rat's patute about the outside of our cars and what people think of them. My wife side swiped a red parking garage pillar and now she has huge red scratches on the side of her white car. When she did it she was all apologetic and sorry and said she'd get it fixed. I asked her if she thought she would sell it by the time it became junker status. She said "no" so I said..."why would you waste the time and money to fix it?" Different strokes I guess. :D

I think we'd get along pretty well at hunting camp!

Not taking it personally, I just don't like my posts being mis-represented.

If correcting misrepresentations is a no no, I'll refrain from doing so in the future. :D

Maybe I'll go over and post about axes or shovels someplace, they've always held a special place in my heart.

ps: You should see the collection of screwdrivers I have, some are early runs and I even have a phillips head that is marked as a #2 but actually has a #1 phillips on it! Talk about rare!, I have that baby waxed, oiled and set in a very secure place in my safe!

Oh, one thing to keep in mind, OP. The people chatting with you here aren't into the really expensive stuff. Go over to the custom and handmade forum and you can chat with some folks who own knives worth as much as a used car. In some cases a new car. Personally, if I owned a knife that was valued at multiple thousands of dollars there's no way I would view it as a tool and you can bet I would do everything I could to avoid scratching it.

Well, if it's just a tool, you probably shouldn't be on a forum for this tool.
Why's that?

Face it, knives are tools. Purpose built tools. If they weren't I doubt I'd even be interested in them. It's because I am interested in these tools that I frequent this place.

In my mind, any item like should probably be defined as something other than a knife

Why? It still fulfills the definition of what a knife is. Is a valuable vintage stamp or coin any less of a stamp or a coin because they aren't intended to be used?

A tool is only a tool if used.

Not true. What about those tools in stores that aren't being used, aren't they tools yet because they haven't been used?

Is a chair any less furniture if it's not being sat on?

If it has a blade and a handle, it's a knife. Trust me on this....;)

Well... alright. I still feel like I should ask Aristotle about this sort of thing.
