Hi, my name is Tam Thompson and I live in Blanco, Texas. Apparently there has been some talk about me that I have not heard all of, and I just want to clear up a few things.
I am a 50-year-old married lady who owns 2 businesses that support my household, including my husband, me, our 2 dogs, 5 cats and 16 acres out here in the hill country.
There has been a threat to post something about me here, so I thought I'd go ahead and beat 'em to the punch and reintroduce myself, since apparently, I need to.
I am not a new member. I don't understand why my "join date" got reset to 1/1/09, but if you will check the posts, I have been on here for at least a year.
I had to take a break from March of 2008 until 1/1/09 due to bad chronic pain in my artificial left knee, including the 6th surgery on that knee in May, 2007.
Yeah, I get crabby when my pain pills wear off...most people with chronic pain do. But I was told today that the mods here get brusque because they're overwhelmed, so I guess that makes us even.
I am a good buyer.
I estimate I have spent at least $10,000 in the last year on beautiful knives bought here, but this is by no means my only way of buying knives and I don't have to be here if it gets to be a bad experience for me.
When I am ready to commit to buying, I say, "I'll take it." When I have questions and am not committing yet, I say, "I'm interested."
Yes, I am picky about shipping because in past knife buys I have had to take as much as an hour-and-a-half out of my business time to drive 18 miles round-trip into town (on slow, gravel roads), stand in line at the Post Office on my cane, to pick up a knife.
We live 1.4 miles up a private, gravel road and USPS informed everyone out here that as of 1/1/08 they will go no more than 0.5 miles up a private road. But UPS and FedEx? They got no problem coming right up to my doorstep with a smile and say, "Here you are, Mrs. Thompson!"
So the UPS and FedEx guys each got $30 tips for Christmas...but the USPS lady only got $10. I am known to be generous when treated nicely, it's my weakness I guess. I sent $85 cash to the friend of a board member just this morning, since board member said he was selling knives to help friend, who has cancer. I enjoy helping...and it was all the money I had in my wallet so I had to go to the bank to get more for my trip tomorrow.
Thus, if we get a package too big to fit in our mailbox down by the highway--which is 1.4 miles from our house--then we get a notice that one of us has to drive to town to retrieve the package. We also get a note if a signature is required.
Here's the thing--and I am not bragging. As one of my friends, Molly, says, "It ain't bragging if it's a fact": I charge and get $150 an hour for my time. So when I have to drive an hour-and-a-half to town and back to pick up a knife, that is $225 that I am not making right then.
As knifemakers know, when you ain't working, you ain't getting paid--same with me, because I write books, ebooks, and do marketing consulting.
I like knifemakers in general and was trying to help when I posted marketing tips. A few people "got it" and thanked me for taking the time to help. But others came down on me, and accused me of "spamming."
Here's what people don't know: the word "spam" now has a very specific legal meaning, and it is very illegal in the US to spam--it means to send unwanted emails. It does NOT mean putting your URL in a sig line. If you wanted to call that anything at all, you would call that marketing. Yes, I market all day long! No, I am no a criminal spammer.
Don't believe me or how much I make? Here's my profile page on elance.com with earnings that are about 20% of what I make, including a video of me so you can see how I walk and talk:

When my mistake with the URL in sig rules was pointed out, I paid for a Platinum membership because I believe in God, Jesus and doing the right thing.
Are y'all getting the message that I'm really a good lady...and also that it's not wise to engage in a war of words with a professional writer?
(Little humor there...sort of.)
Why am I writing so much, since I say I'm too busy this and too busy that? Because hopefully I will only have to do this ONE MORE TIME...and then I can point sellers of knives I'm interested in here and not have to explain the whole, tiresome shipping thing. And yes, I do have a right to be picky. Knivemakers are picky when they make knives, and I like that and appreciate it.
Enough. Case closed.
