HOGS/Strider?

I won't own a Strider for many reasons, one of which is that I'm not impressed by what I've experienced holding them.

Plus...I would NEVER feel under-equipped comparing my XM-18's to any Strider...even the customs.

.

No Striders here, but I do have three of the Kershaw/Strider ZT300s. I think they are great hard use knives, some think they are too big, but since I carry a folder all the time, I don't notice them in the pocket. They have a thick titanium frame lock back side, tapped for all types of pocket clip locations and an assisted opening. They were originally priced at $295.00, but have come down and you can find almost new ones for under $200 often, making them a great buy in my opinion.

Here is a picture of TAD version which has a carbon fiber scale and what was a ZT301 that I pimped. I bead blasted the stripes off of the S30V blade and the black finish on the titanium lockback. I also smoothed/removed the machine texture off of the carbon fiber scale (the carbon fiber scales have pretty sharp machine ridges, the G-10 scales are smoother).

Personally, I own a Gen2 XM and I consider them to be full on customs. I consider the standard Strider line Semi-Production much like a Non-custom shop Busse.

I agree though XM's are absolute tanks!

Does any company besides Strider offer a you-break-it-we-fix-it warranty on folders? I've had good luck with Buck replacing blades on knives without charge, but I don't like the fact that you can break a Buck fairly easily. And I know there are some custom makers who offer bullet-proof warranties, but then you're back to an individual's capacity to perform--and his longevity.

I do think Strider's heat-treat on S30V steel as depicted in Noss's test of one of their fixed-blade knives is impressive--in my mind proven to produce a very tough blade for a stainless steel and seems to hold an edge well.

I wish Busse would actually come out with a folder instead of joking around about it for so long.
I know many people do. I hope they never ever do. It can only be a disappointment, unless they come up with the most insanely revolutionary lock on it.

From a folder POV, you'd be hard pressed to find a more robust, balls out tough folder than the offerings from Strider.
Maybe not more, you certainly have no argument from me on the toughness of their products. But there are a few other brands, known by all, that I think are just as tough, but a lot less expensive. Striders are expensive not just because they are tough - and they are - but also because they are exclusive and rare - and hyped. All IMHO of course.

Thanks for respectfully disagreeing, and I hope to have reciprocated in kind. :)

I have two SMF's and two AR's.

They are not that pretty or elegant, just great knives that are built solidly.

Duce---
Guys, I like a FB but a folder is so convenient. This Strider GB will be my folding fixed blade. :D
I still will have my Nuc EDC on me, of course---just to show off!

I LOVE my SMF. All you have to to remember is folders are never going to be as balls out tough as fixed blades

The ZT0301 is more robust and beefy than my SMF, but still, the Strider is just sexy. IMHO...

My Ritter Grip has been getting a lot of pocket time lately... ;)..more than either of those two.

Here are my takes on all threee, for those who give a hoot!

Nice pack, P-Easy.
To soften the "vicious cycle" blow, I sell one to buy one. Actually, momma came up with dat rule. :p
And It's a good rule.

Actually, I can't disagree with this. Bit of a vicious circle though... ;)

Tis why I have only a handful of customs.

Some of the guys I want stuff from either has a wait that is just too long for an impatient guy like me, isn't taking orders anymore or is out of my price range.

Guys like:

Deryk Munroe
DB Fraley
Matt Cucchiara
Neil Blackwood
Tom Mayo
Mike Snody

I could go on... but I would get sad. :(

No folders, just a small collection of fixed blades from back in the day. I was interested in the AR/GB’s when they first came out, but the originals were pretty rough around the edges.

The SmF/SnG format is definitely a big improvement, IMO. I’ve handled a few SnG’s that functioned very well. Am more of a Sebenza guy, though.

For a beater folder, I really like the 0300. There is just something about that knife. As far as the “tool” factor goes, I would rather have an XM than a Strider folder of any type, I think.

For my purposes, Sebenza + .20 GW > beater folder. Folders are just too inherently fragile to build into real beaters. Still got my eye on that 0300, though. :)

I don't think Striders are rare at all. They're MUCH easier to come by than other knives.

What I'd love is a Marlowe, or a Lambert with a thick ti framelock. But neither of those is that important to me, as I have great tools already.

I think the Hinderer XM-18 has nearly closed the book, so to speak, on hard use folders. Like... BLAM, this is how you do it... It's only fault, from my limited perspective, is it's rarity and thus it's cost. All IMO, of course.

Honestly, I hope Jerry and crew don't release a folder... it's bound to disappoint, as compared to his fixed-blades. Unless, as was mentioned, some truly revolutionary and never before seen lock and pivot design comes with it...

I wouldn't order 'Strider' TP. I guess 'Busse Combat' has a religious property with me now. I don't know who that scares more, you hogs or me.

As for Rick's knives, the XM's have gone mid-tech, so there are more on the market. Of the three I've bought, I paid retail for one, UNDER retail for another(both of those from dealers), and secondary price for the third. All three new. Average of $415 a piece. Not bad at all.
