HOGS/Strider?

Personally, I own a Gen2 XM and I consider them to be full on customs. I consider the standard Strider line Semi-Production much like a Non-custom shop Busse.

I agree though XM's are absolute tanks!

I'm with these guys, the XM-18's are awesome and I think better quality for the money. All the weirdness with Strider turns me off. I've had a few in the past and they seem decent enough but I like the Hinderers better.

I don't think Striders are rare at all. They're MUCH easier to come by than other knives.

What I'd love is a Marlowe, or a Lambert with a thick ti framelock. But neither of those is that important to me, as I have great tools already.

Funny you should mention that. A Lambert is one of the few I do own. One of the best full on customs for the money. Fit & finish are off the hook.

Striders? Been there done that. I had a SNG, SMF, SMF DGG and currently have a AR and a super bowie. Hinderer, been there done that, had the xm-18 in both 3" and 3.5". The CRK folders are pretty nice too :)

Kirby Lambert has a great design, mad grinding skills and a great feeling knife but that wispy, straight razor edge he hollow grinds would certainly keep me from using the knife except very gingerly. I just had a Lambert sniper here for a sheath and the edge "pinged" like that of a straight razor.

I edc a Strider SnG and use it at work everyday and don't balk at things like digging staples out of lumber and such. Good heat treat too as it holds it's edge quite well.

I thought the Hinderer was my grail folder in the genre but I held a friends and it didn't fit my large hand as well, we both found it had too many sharp edges on the handle and the flipper wasn't really worth it. That said, it was a sleek, awesome design that was admirable in the skill and precision of the machining. I still like the look of the Hinderers better.

The strider's 2 distinct grips is the biggest feature that makes them so good. You can grip back a hack or grip forward and use the tip for fine work.
It is such a versatile bomb proof design with a great warranty and heat treat.

I didn't drink the Koolaid, I just grew to really like using this knife.

Back to the OP's question,

I am looking for a strider folder right now. I really like the SMF's with the gunner grips, those are sweet. Tiger stripe is fine, i wouldn't mind stone washed. I may get an SNG eventually as well.

I borrowed a buddie's SNG for a couple weeks and it was pretty nice. At work I had to make a hole through a cabinet and countertop to ghetto rig a phone setup, with no tools. The strider sng took care of that with no problem.

I heard all the hype behind Striders, and decided I needed one. I bought a really nice SMF w/BOS heat treat for a great deal from Bravado.

It was nice, but wasnt really what I needed. I like my Seb too much to upseat it from my EDC rotation, and I have a Busse on me daily if I need to tackle something HEAVY duty.

I felt that it was very sturdy knife, but couldnt slice like my Seb could, and what caught me by surprise is that the Seb and the SMF had identically (to the eye, no micrometer here) thick Ti slabs.

Besides, I ended up trading it straight across for a CG FBM, so I think I came out on top.....

I can't help it. every time I think of a folder I find myself thinking "why?"

I've carried a leatherman since I was 14, and have carried the leatherman charge w/bit kit for 5+ years now. There was a time when I carried multiple knives including folders, but I just don't understand it anymore. I'll pocket a small fixed blade long before I carry a large folder.

I only own an SMF currently, but have had a PT on order since January to be filled this fall. Honestly they are nice knives. Are they incredible beyond any other custom maker? No, in no way what so ever. I buy their folders because I like them, not because they are superior in any way to any other maker out there on the market.

I dont give a damn about the politics behind them. I work too hard for my money to spend based upon a current political climate or hype from self-proclaimed knife authorities...the SMF is a nice folder that pleases me right now...nothing more is important to me. If I find something else I like more I'll sell the SMF is a heartbeat.

Thanks Guys.
With the Strider GB, I just Really like that folder design; from the blade to the handle to the Liner Lock!

GatMan---Can you spare a dime??
:p

It's in the mail, bruh.

On the real, though, I'm not wealthy by ANY stretch of the imagination, but I do know that it's smarter to buy well the first time, than to spend less and have to buy again later. For that reason ALL my fixed blades are Busses, all my tactical folders are Hinderers and all my balisongs are BM's.

I have less toys than others, but what I do have is top quality. LMT, Saddleback, McGizmo, etc...

Gat---Coo!
Got a pair of Zeiss binocs??

I had a Zeiss lens for a DSLR......it was a fixed focal lenght, so I never really used it much except for a few knife shots...

Traded it for a BOSE 3-2-1 surround sound system. Not too bad for a lens I got for free:D

I like my Strider a lot.

If I had to pick between the SnG and the Hinderer XM-18, and could only take one I would have to pick the Hinderer. But those two knives sit at the top of the tough folder heap for me.

zero tolerance does no questions asked.

That's good to know. Looking at their website, I see they are a Strider/Onion/Kai collaboration.

On their website, they don't actually state a "no questions asked" warranty. Under their "Warranty" page is the following:

"How will I know if my knife is covered under warranty?"

and the answer...

"Please provide your phone number and the best time to call you in your letter of information. If necessary we will call you to discuss your knife."

From my perspective, one wouldn't know from that statement what to expect.

Does any other company offer a no-questions-asked warranty on folders, besides Strider?

Rick Hinderer would probably replace it if you broke an XM. He's run his over with a truck and no problems there. The Gen 1's & Gen 2 XM's had all hand ground blades by Rick but the Gen 3's are CnC'd I think.

Thanks for that bit of information......I was just about to pull the trigger on one, but that description confirmed my worst nightmare!!!:thumbup:

You just savedme about 500, I feel I owe you:D

Sebbies and Striders are both great folders...I have no issues with either design. No bladeplay, good edge retention. Just maybe the Sebbie is a little more stable in the framelock but the whole Strider profile screams more that it can be used harder.

Would like to add a 1st or 2nd gen. XM-18 to my collection if I can find one for a reasonable price so I can form my own opinion about the Hinderer design.

Dunno, depends on what your using it for. Different knives for different tasks. I use mine every day, it's held up fine..
