Hogue Deka Scale Options

That's awesome. Now, if I could only get a smooth thumb stud...

I've been on the lookout for Deka hardware replacement sets (hopefully uncoated with a more "normal" thumb stud). Nothing has popped up yet but I wouldn't be surprised if something becomes available down the road. I'll keep ya posted!

🤔 Whats wrong with the thumbstud?

Really? I love the thumbstuds on dekas, maybe check etsy? Or get a bunch of people to complain to flytanium and metonboss lol. There are very few knives with the quality and popularity of the deka but almost no aftermarket support? Its a better knife than many twice the price, in my mind that means people are willing to spend some to upgrade it!

Yes. For the same reason that I prefer a chamfered spydie hole, I prefer a smooth thumb stud. In either case, I'm typically using pressure instead of friction to flick the blade open with my thumb. Being smooth is good for that so long as the size and geometry of the knife fit my hand. Being sharp, rough, pointy, or otherwise catchy tends to wear at my soft office-grade thumbs. 😜

Of course, exceptions exist depending on size and geometry. The Dragonfly fits my larger hand surprising well for its small size. However, I leave its smaller spydie hole crisp because the leverage is different and I can't get as much thumb meat into it.

Got the new scales installed tonight. I dig the color and texture, and the fit and finish is good. The knife feels way better than it did with the squishy plastic scales, mission accomplished.

I don't know of anyone making scales for these. It seems strange to me that Hogue doesn't offer different scales options since another side of their business is doing exactly that for guns.

You could always mod the stock scales. G10 is easy to sand. Minor modifications can be handled between the coarse and fine sides of an emery board. (As with sanding many materials, take steps not to inhale the dust.) You can also dye G10 with the RIT for synthetics. There are videos on YouTube showing different methods. You could mess around with existing pattern or just dye it out with a dark enough color.

I think the new MagnaCut models are using some sort of polymer. I'm curious as to how it will feel.
I have a magnacut model in the blue. its slippery even with the texture, and yeah said already squishy. the handle shape tends to slide forward in a grip. might be due to size of it and what I'm used to being bigger. its not a favorite.

What was the price and company?

The red G-10 ones from here:

They were ~$78 shipped, there are a bunch of different color options and some micarta.

I actually emailed the guy to see if he was planning to offer scales for the Deka a while ago. He said he'd look into it, and emailed me back the other day saying they were now in stock so I figured I'd give them a try.

Sweet, looks like there's a couple different options on scale manufacturers for Deka scales now. Sounds like they've been listening!

Bob Denman Bob Denman I'd like to see those bone linen scales when you get em. Those sound sweet!

Looking really closely at this KC offer - Hogue Deka with magnacut blade. Love the look, size, and especially that blade shape, but wondering about the polymer handle. I know the Deka gets pretty positive reviews around here, and the magnacut has me drooling just a little, ok maybe a lot, but I see one negative post here about these handles - any other thoughts good or bad? My Add To Cart button finger is gettin’ twitchy!

The deka is a FANTASTIC KNIFE, the polymer handles are pretty bendy. I would say get it for sure, the modified wharncliff is difficult for me to sharpen i have the drop point one. But regardless, if you decide you dont like the handle get a modified one

Just ordered these in blue G10. No idea what I’m doing - the closest I’ve ever been to taking a folder apart was swapping the pocket clip on my new to me Osborne. I’m worried about the pivot screw - one errant sneeze while that’s off and I could be spending the next month looking for pivot parts in the carpet. 😲

I do like that the clip screw holes are only on one side on these. The open holes on the originals look a little unfinished.

Blue G10 scales arrived and are installed. My first time disassembling a folder, and I’m not afraid to say it was a bit nerve-wracking. Not something I’m going to be in a rush to do again. But it’s done, after a little adaptation and colorful language. i think I got it back together correctly; after a bit of adjustment (first time I cranked it down a bit too tight), the blade opens and closes easily, and there’s no play at all side to side or up and down. But the lock button feels a bit gritty and doesn’t slide as smoothly as before, though it does seem to be smoothing out after a little fidgeting. Overall I like the look and feel of the new scales. They’re not significantly heavier than stock, but they do make the knife feel more substantial in hand. And no clip holes on the show side!
