Hogue EX-05 shot show 2016

Hogue has a knack for producing some absolutely beautiful knives:

To some that are..... well, categorically questionable  in taste:

I came back to this thread to give it another chance..... it's definitely unique looking, and not in a particularly bad way when you put it up against the EX-04. Put some black G-Mascus on it and I might break my "no flippers" rule.

The handles fine, maybe, but that blade has got to go. I'm not buying that. It does look like a pelican more than a dolphin though.

That's uh...wow, that's bad.

True words. Sometimes - often, that is - a designer/maker will stray over the border from sanity into the land of "please, please look at me". They design something totally goofy just to be outside the envelope and get attention in a crowded knife market. I understand the compulsion to do this, because there are a limited number of pure, classic knife designs and most of them have already been done several times over. Once you make a Sebenza or a Blur or a 710, it can't be done again. But when I get queasy just looking at a knife, I know its not a classic design that I would be interested in.

Love ya, Hogue. Really I do. But this one came out of the oven too soon. And get rid of that dang spoon clip design on your other knives while you are at it.

And anyways, the knife market designed this monstrous thing. Compound grinds, flippers on literally everything..... live with it, folks. ;)

In some ways, I think you're right (and it's not just limited to Hogue either). Mr. Elishewitz couldn't see the forest through the trees on that one. Question is, are we at the nadir of tacti-cool folders with designs like this? I hope so.

Yea, I know it's weird but it is barely starting to grow on me and I am one for unique. I will say one thing about allen, he is very consistent about function in his designs, he thinks through all the curves for what they might be best used for. I bet that blade shape has a very good reason for looking like a pelican beak...lol

I'm really disappointed in Hogue. The machining and embedding of the bolster plates and lock mechanism on the EX-01 are, in my humble opinion, groundbreaking. To put a production facility this skilled to work producing this fantasy design is waste of their talents.

By the way, does anyone know who actually makes the knives for Hogue?

Hogue has a separate knifemaking factory in Nevada. Their original factory in California is the one where the gun grips are made.

The beauty of the EX-01, the no-nonsense utility and simple, yet elegant design of the EX-02, and overall quality of their knives give the EX-05 a pass in my book. Don't get me wrong, I won't buy it, ever, but I will still keep my eye on Hogue knives.

Any info on if those were OTF's made by Hogue in the background?

Strangely there seems to be nothing here or on the USN subforum about it. You would think they would throw a lateral and switch the attention to the OTF considering how no one but the biggest of brown nosers thinks the EX-05 is anything short of hideous.

Why yes... start at 1:30 into this video for more info on the EX05 and the HOGUE OTF knife:

Also - Allen's instagram account:

Interestingly... Gavin Hawk (G&G Hawk) makes an OTF .... just really expensive...

I own Hogue EX03's - both 3.5" versions - that button lock, the smooth as butter opening action (thumb stud is superb) and tumbled blade finish are amazing - but this EX05 is not a good look...

Also - I detest black finish - make it the beautiful EX01 and Ex03 tumbled finish please - or better yet... a tumbled blackwash...
