Hello,
As Jolipapa said it in France the horn usually used is a pressed cow horn. As it's not naturally very dense they boil it then put it in a vice or better in an hydrolic press.
In Sardinia cow/buufalo horn is considered as a lower quality material . Sheep horn is preferred. Ususally it comes from Morocco. Of course when it's available ( its hounding is forbidden or almost forbidden)
the best horn comes from the mouflon.

Another animal material can be mentioned : the horse shoe. Before going to Sardinia I didn't know its use.
Like the horn it is in keratin. But the difference is that it has grown literally under a press : the horse. So it's much more dense than the horn.
Even in the island it's difficult to find knife-makers who use it . The material is rare, hard to be worked because before to be polished it's difficult to see its colour and its designs.
And also it stinks

But it's WONDERFULL !

All these knives have been made by my friend Andrea Melis who is Master knife-maker of the sardinian guild.

That Horse Hoof is an amazing material, outstanding beauties there. Not surprised it stinks, when you think what it's been stepping in :D All horn reeks though when using it...

The idea of having hoof handles is interesting. I have seen other interesting examples, as well as Achillepattada's beauties. Maybe it's time to find a knife with them!!

That Horse Hoof is really interesting me...and it should be a plentiful and re-newable resource, unlike say Ivory :( But, then I got thinking, what about Pig foot or as the English call it, Pig's Trotter?;) Even more exotic could be Wild Boar ( Sanglier) trotter  they also have tusks that could be used. Chamois horn or Ibex horn could be interesting too:cool:

No posts were harmed. You'll find all the posts from the missing thread in this thread.
I looked through the entire thread and don’t see them anywhere. The other thread had a bunch of posts from January 2018 this one jumps straight from November 2017 to June 2018

From what I recall the thread that was merged was a brand new thread. I merged all the posts from that thread into an existing thread with the same content.
If you need to discuss this further please message me. Thanks

I just got this off the bay, and paid a ridiculously low price for it, basically what the sheath is worth. The listing said USA made, and the pattern welded steel looked better than the usual run of Pakistani make, so I tried it. It's a substantial, well-made knife and sheath, we'll see how the steel holds up!
