Horsewright Knives and Leather

Here's an interesting one. A guy called me and he was cutting rope and his blade broke on him. I was interested so I had him send it in. We talked and I would replace the knife. He decided to go with AEB-L this time as I didn't have any 26C3 blades heat treated. He uses the knife daily so didn't want to wait for a new batch of HC blades. My stuff often gets used very hard and there was cow guacamole on both the blade, handle and sheath. The sheath had been modified from a pancake into a Slotted by cutting off one side.

When I saw it I was kinda perplexed.I figured either a flaw in the steel, unlikely. A flaw in heat treat, unlikely, a flaw in the grinding on me most likely. But I was unable to tell, nothing stood out. Queen Sabe?

I made him up the new knife:

With a Slotted sheath.

Just for laughs I thought I'd see if I could fix the old one and dang if I wasn't able to.

So I sent both back.

Still kinda a perplexment.

Now that is customer service!

He did a pretty good job cutting off that second slot btw. Makes for an interesting look without the fold.

Looks great...... I love that BUFF ..👌👌👌
and rough out too..😉
Good deal and thanks. For those that maybe don’t know, we use two different types of water buffalo in our projects. This belt is a veg tan, firm strap leather. Its idea for belts and other strap goods. I use it for the straps on all my rifle scabbards. There is another water buffalo leather that we use. This is a soft chrome type leather. We originally were using it for chaps, leggings etc. But its great for our Buckaroo pouches and our water buffalo overlay products. Same critter, tow different leathers because of how it si tanned.

Great looking belt. Ive already got 4 from Hanks, but i can always find a reason for a new bit of leather.
Thanks, sounds good. We build a lot of belts!

Well Done on both blades!
Thank you!

Thanks! Yeah I thought so too. Always gets a guy to thinking…..

Great looking knife. Ive got an el toro on the way, as I've got larger hands, how's the comfort for the size?
Thank you. Hope the El Toro serves you well. It's a good looking knife. The Mestano in the pic has some chunky Elk slabs which fits my hands well and is comfortable in use. I have a good sized hand. It is very handy with a 2 1/2" blade and a real slicer. 🤠

I hopefully have a Paisano on the way. No shipping notice yet, so fingers crossed.
I checked em out and I have two Paisanos waiting to ship. One needed an additional Leatherman Wave sheath and the other an addditional Pancake sheath with intitals. Both of those sheaths should be done today so will probably ship on Monday as they take a lil bit to dry. We try to keep the Wave sheaths in stock but had a run on them recently. So I started a batch of them yesterday.

Mine's the one with the Wave sheath. I thought that might have been the case, but then worried it was a problem with the shipping company since there are so many issues these days. Thanks for the update!

Horsewright Horsewright Dave, how are your Hyers holding up?
The quality has been excellent. I really like them. The fit is a lil different though and I probably should have got an 11 instead of 11.5 so maybe try them on if you can. I'm kinda a B width and for that they recommend going down a half size. But I didn't find that out till later. I've got good insoles in them though and that makes up the diff. Be wearing them all day today. Competing in a cutting and then a boxing.

Good deal. Outsoles holding up well? I got a pair of their Holton, but same deal, half size too big I think so I returned them. Think I’m going to try a cutter toe style instead of the broad square toe too and going to size down. No one in Alaska that I know of carries them so it’s all mail order. Cost of living here with shipping and exchanges.

Sorry lil late getting back to you. Fri through Sunday we were tied up with a horse show. Did pretty darn good too. I took fourth in the Cutting, missing the money by one point. The cattle classes pay to the top three, the non cattle classes don’t pay but you are awarded ribbons. But then the cattle classes entry fees are 3X the entry fees for the non cattle classes, so there ya go. In the Boxing I came in second, so earned a pretty nice check. In fact I was rather taken a back by how much it was. In the Ranch Riding Class you are judged by how well you perform a series of prescribed maneuvers, referred to as a pattern. You are being judged against the others in the class. It was Nichole’s first time to show in this class. And she was riding a borrowed horse. She was riding my horse Spud, whom she had ridden 6 years ago, once, before we owned him. So Thursday night she jumps on him to give him a try as her two horses are down. One has some bruising in the feet and the other strained a ligament and is on thirty days bed rest. So she was a pedestrian but signed up for this horse show. Spud had never done any of this kind of stuff before either. We’d cut once before, he and I, a year ago and this was the first time we’d done the boxing, but he’d never done any of these type of show classes either. They took first place in the Ranch Riding and second in the Ranch Rail. Ranch Rail you are being judged on gaits, transitions, responsiveness to the bridle all kinds of things. Difference is that in the Rail class the whole class is riding at the same time. So there is some showmanship involved thats not in the Ranch Riding as you are in the arena alone for the Ranch Riding. So anyhoo. I wore those Hyer boots from dark to dark on Friday and Saturday and thats a long time since they are primarily riding boots for me. I didn’t even take other boots to change into. Didn’t need too.

They brag on their super oil impregnated outsoles and I’m a believer. I won’t ride in anything but a leather sole thats an absolute for me. I’ve had them in frog strangling sideways thunderstorms and I’ve not had them leak through. I’ve had them completely soaked but water didn’t come up through the sole. I like them and would buy again

Saw eight to ten of my knives over the weekend most of them in the cattle classes. Didn’t get any pics though as I left my phone in the truck while I was riding.

Looks like we crossed in the mail Amigo!
