How bad have you cut yourself with a knife?

While practicing a particular inertia opening with my Spyderco Endura serrated the knife some how rotated up above my hand. On the way down it went into my thumb severing the tendon. Didn’t start bleeding right away which made me think it was not that bad. Went to the ER and they didn’t caught the tendon being cut. I decided to hit the doctor’s office two days later, they discovered it and was in for surgery within the week. This happened in August, since then had a second surgery two months ago. At this point I think that I have lost less then 5% mobility in the thumb, mostly hyper-extension motion. Anyway I was back flipping knifes the following week, this time with my left hand with a Balisong. So far no more injuries .:D

No knife story, but did put the tip of a panga through the back of my left hand when holding wood while chopping!
Rather young and stupid at the time.
Made an interesting scar to go with all the others.

Dropped a Buck 110 through my (bare) foot once which was good for a few stitches. Cut my thumb using a folder as a mat knife once which was good for 11 stitches. That still makes me grimmice.

The only bad one I have had was last year. I flicked open a CRKT Point Guard at work to cut some shrink wrap off of a pallet and did not engage the LAWKS system. I made on long cut all the way across one side of the pallet, stepped over to the other side and did a back cut on that side. I guess my wrist twisted, still not sure what happened but the knife closed and the serreated edge cut my middle finger to the bone. I probably should have went for stitches, but got the bleeding stopped after a while and now just have a little scar.

Wow, reading all these stories of knife handling accidents has made me a little queasy :-( I am afraid if something like this happened to me, my wife would take all my sharp pointy things away. I have had a few close calls, but no cuts yet. I found that I cant handle knives with less than my full attention. Its also bad mojo to sharpen or test sharpness unless your totally alone. People can walk in and startle you or bump you etc. Seems like the Lansky is an accident waiting to happen as well. Clamps on knives and oil all over everything. I try and use only the sharpmaker now. Oh well, all your stories just serve to caution me even more. Every once in a while the folks over at thefiringline.com have a thread where folks admit to accidental discharges of firearms as well. Its informative. Hopefully it helps avoid the same mistakes by me.

I've been reading threads like this since I first got to BFC. I've been playing with knives for as long as I can remember. I've always marvelled at how you guys cut youselves so often and so badly. I'm the kinda guy who gets small nicks, scrapes, burns, etc. all the time, but can't remember the last time I even needed a bandaid. I'm sure those of you who haven't posted to this thread feel the same way. Well, my turn came-

A few weeks ago I was cleaning some wax off of a candle holder, trying to cut a notch in the wax to fit a candle in, when the knife slipped. BM 730CFHS went through 1.5" of wax like nothing and stabbed the tip right into the palm of my left hand. If I had taken it to a doctor, it probably would have been worth 6-10 stitches. Bandaids & Neosporin took care of the cut fine - I heal well. I'll probably have the scar forever, but that don't bug me. Thing that does bug me is that I nicked a nerve. It was a sensory (luckily not motor) nerve and now I only have partial feeling in my left index finger. Full range of motion, though. I'm hoping it'll heal itself eventually. Otherwise I guess I'll bring it in to be fixed someday.

So you guys whose turn hasn't come yet, who think you might somehow be immune or exempt from such stupidity and bad luck, you're next!

accidently:

stabbed self in hand with boy scout knife. lots of bleeding-
minor scar.

slashed forefinger and thumb tip with CS Kobun while trying
to paracord the handle. big chunks flapping.

slipped with a Spyderco Delica and stabbed the web between
the forefinger and thumb.

speed opened a Benchmade axis and missed, lots of blood.

note to self: be more careful...........

I used to carry a Spyderco Endura for work. I was cutting some shrink-tube off an electrical connection. I had a hold of the cable and, like a moron, was cutting toward my hand. My knife was sharp as always and cut through without much trouble and still had enough force to stab into my hand about 3/8" right on my index finger knuckle. I bled for a long time from that one and my wife still won't let me live it down. I can't say I blame her.

A few years ago I was stupidly ("Mother always said not to play with dangerous things!" flipping my ol' benchmade emerson between saber and referse grip and lost control. The Knife went tip first, about 1 and 1/2 inches into my right thigh. Didn't feel a thing.

Lets see...

First 7 stitches caused by Schrade 1" knife, cut me just above the 1st knuckle on my thumb when I was 13-14. Little scar now.(the knife still shaves)

Steak knife that was "tapped" against the back of my left hand by a girl that was 'just teasing with me'. Should of had stitches, but now it looks cool. Uh...maybe 5 years ago???

September last year, Tip of right Right index finger 1/2 way severed, sharpening a pincel with my CRKT Mirage. 4 stitches to get it to 'stay on' so it could heal...still not much feeling.
Now I use mechanical pincels

December last year, Left index finger just on the last knuckle 3 sitiches so it would close, Khukuri H.I. M43. (dont test a particular knives sharpness that way...)

Seventeen stitches in the web of my left thumb from a food service bread knife. "When they tell you not to put knives in the pot sink, DON'T PUT THE &**^ING KNIVES IN THE *^$#ING DISHWATER!!!!"
Either I severed the nerve, or the water numbed me, because I didn't even know I was cut untill I saw the water cloud with blood. Took out my hand, glanced at the phalangeal joint, and passed out.
Sawed across the back of the same thumb with a bow saw once, left tigerstripes. My fingernails save me from innumerable tip slashes. My right thumb was hamburger for a week after I got my K.I.S.S. because the ball kept slipping into the hole in the handle, and getting sawed by the serrations. I don't even know if I can be identified by fingerprins anymore because of all the scar tissue.
I swear on my life I have never cut myself, or anyone else above the wrist.

This happened about 4 months ago at the local biker bar, my wife and I frequent. I just got finished putting a pretty good edge on my Emerson Commander. I carry it in one of the Emerson quick deployment sheaths.

I was flapping my jaws about what a great edge was on the knife and I flicked it out of the sheath and instantly cut the tip of my thumb off!! I did this stupid thing right in front of about 20 people. Had to get it all bandaged up and I was bleeding like a stuck pig.

Hehehe. The day I got my first knife from my father. It was a "Diamond Edge" stockman. I was whittling a stick with it the wrong way; running the blade toward my thumb. The knife slid off the wood and into the meat of my thumb. The knife cut right through to the bone.

My father stitched up my thumb and said, "I bet you'll never do that again, will ya?" I haven't gotten a bad cut since, knock on wood. :)

I have had a few bad cuts. The first one was when I was young, probably in elementary school, with an xacto knife. I was bieng stupid, using a dull blade. I wanted to open the bottom of a plastic bottle by cutting threw it, and the bottle was fairly small. So I just held it with one heand and started to stab the knife threw the bottom. Naturally I missed on the third stab, but got my thumb, and just about cut it to the bone. Didn't go for stitches, and now have a long scar across the fleshy side of my thumb.

The next was just a few months ago, with a balisong. I was learning with a cheap Jaguar, barefoot. The knife slipped, and ended up sticking out of my foot. I pulled it out, and put on some slippers so I wouldn't get blood on the carpet, and now have a nice scar. Probably should have gotten some stitches though, oh well, I don't like hospitals.

I nearly had a real bad cut monday, but not from a knife. I was up in a tree trimming it with a chainsaw. The chain was loose, and spinning pretty fast, and I acctidently touched the saw to my thigh. It cut through both of my pairs oif pants, and barely scratched my skin.

The worst cut i've ever inflicted upon myself was with just cured
1/2" 7foot just came out of a autoclave ,just out of the tool it was layed up in (Graphite Carbon Composite )part of the fuel bladder L/H side of the CH-47 Chinook.and i just took off my gloves .that one lifted the top of my left hand off 42 stiches. It slide off a cart and i tried to stop it.I lost ,it won.it's as sharp as a razor when it's broken out of the tool ,and before the jagged edges are routed off.
Knife cut would probably be the newest, about 4 months ago (Bran new just out of the box Dalton Border Patrol) checking it out for the first time ,and I thought I was going to drop it (no way !!) so as I started to lose it ,I grab the Lanyard wich swung the blade onto the back side of my hand (other hand this time )it was bad ,but i took care of it myself,no stiches.. and it healed very nice.

First set of stitches from a knife that I can remember is when I was about 16 and was cutting some reeds with a POS folder. Just sharpened it and it got stuck in a knot, ya did just what you aren't suppose to do. Turned the knife around and cut toward the left hand. Sliced through the left thumb a bit below the nail almost cutting off the pad of that thumb. Several stitches later, back in business.

Got a few stitches when I jammed a 1/2 inch chisel through the side of my left index finger. Just the first of a few left index injuries.

Cut about a half inch off the tip of the left thumb tip cutting building stakes with a hatchet. No stitches, wasn't enough place to stitch. The DR just rapped it in elastic gauze and said good luck. I had luck and it reattached, no problem

Got a close call flicking open my AFCK. Wicked sharp. I flipped it open with my left hand and it got away from me. It was close to my face and when it made a turn it made a half inch jab in the side of my face just to the left of my mouth. Used a few butterfly bandages for a few days and really had no scar.

Got a new Accent and was cutting off one of those plastic bangs you get when you go to a boat show to go an come. Knife slipped, very sharp, and made a nice V cut in the side of my left index finger. Seven stitches later all is well.

Last incident, was the Saturday before Christmas. I was cutting up some raw turkey while doing some cooking. Using a long bladed Cold Steel filet knife and it needed a touch up. I had a set of long crock sticks in a red holder. NO brand name on it. The left stick slipped out of the holder and the single safety rod wasn't safe enough. A 1 1/4" cut right on the top of my left index finger down to the tendon. First thing I did was check to see if it moved. The doctor and I was supprised that I hadn't cut the tendon. He looked quite a while to make sure. Five stitches and it is the first cut that didn't heal well. When the stitches came out only half the cut had closed. Had to keep butterflys on it for seven more days.

My left hand should run in fear every time I take out a sharp implement.

Ya'll be safe.

Permanent un-repariable deamge to my right hand pinky. Is not Numb all the time, but when i touch the little white "nub" that is there it sends a tingling up my arm a bit. Can be painful is somthing gets caught against this or any constnat pressure, but just a tap it feels tingly. Not pleasant in any way. Sucks.

I've had my share of cuts as well. Most were from improperly handling a nice sharp knife. Here's my $0.02.

My first deep cut that required an ER visit was many years ago. I had accidentally locked the keys in my car and was using a freshly sharpened Schrade Old Timer stockman to open the vent window. The knife closed on my right index finger above the middle joint cuttimg the finger and nerve to the bone. There I was, bleeding like a stuck pig on my way to the ER. Later, with 12 stitches and 6 months time the finger healed and I regained feeling in it.

My dumbest knife accident was with a new Cold Steel SRK. I was throwing the knife into a wood block in my shop and missed the block. However, I did successfully stick the knife completely through my right tennis shoe, my foot and into the floor. Once again I had to make a quick drive to the ER with a shoe full of blood. The doctor said I was lucky, no cut tendons or nerve damage, the knife went between the bones, just had a lot of stitches and a prominent limp for many months.

Morale of the story, handle sharp things carefully and keep a good first aid kit handy.

Take Care!

Cut myself with a box cutting utility knife while stripping copper wire once. Cut my first finger to the bone. Had it wrapped in duct tape for a week or two.
