How bad have you cut yourself with a knife?

...but all the little trolls are starting to look about the same to me these days...like a little midget troll army...pop one of them, and three more show to take their place... ;)

But when it starts to get 'funky', I just read one of Ed's stories, start laughing, and then life is good again... :)

I had the bright idea a few years ago of polishing out some scratches on a big Case bowie. I had my car buffer on the floor and was holding the knife to it, everything went fine for a while. Then apparently the blade got caught up in the wool bonnet and slung the blade into the inside of my right ankle. I was scared to look. It didn't bleed to much, but what a gash. At the emergancy room after x-rays it was confirmed that I had cut tendens and chipped the bone. Doctor sayed he could'nt numb bone. He had to irragate the wound with hypos of distilled water and feel around inside for bone fragments at this time I was sweating bullets. Then he had to sew up tendens first then sew up skin. I limped around in a walking cast for several weeks. I now really appreciate high polish knives, the maker puts his life on the line on them.

OK, THAT'S IT!!! All you former boyscouts.... I'm tearing up your tote n' chip cards!:p

I cut my right index finger completely off with a 6" blade.

Only thing that saved it dropping to the ground was a tiny bit of skin on the underside. 7 hrs of micro surgery (plastic knuckle, fish the tendon from the elbow area, 19 needles of which I punched 1 orderly out while the other 3 held me down (joke), you get the pic.......worst pain I have ever felt)....anyway......back to the story...

...10 weeks on light duties, 8 weeks in plaster, 7 yrs before I started to get feeling back in the finger, and, could bend it like normal.

How I did it? Was cutting rubber toward my hand, with a blunt knife - SUX hey!...

I read the topic heading a couple of days ago and thought "gee I've never really cut myself, these people must be careless". Then I went on to read a couple of threads about sharpening and decided to go get my self a 204 sharpmaker. In my excitement to open it i grabbed the first blade i found to open the &%$@!!! clamshell pack and guess what. Using the knife in a very unsafe manner managed to slice my finger very deep. No stitches required ( I don't think) but did it hurt and was I embarassed! Fortunatley, no one was around.

left index finger sliced by a buck stockman about 10 years ago. Can't seem to get faster than 65 words per minute typing b/c that finger is a hair slower than the rest.

I have yet to cut myself bad with a knife. I hope the day never comes that I do cut myself bad with a knife.
Sorry to hear about all the bad cuts posted here.
I am always getting little cuts from working with my hands on the job, but nothing bad.
I have seen people loose fingers. One was a old class mate in shop class and the other was a guy I worked with years ago.

Makes you think about safty.

This didnt happen to me but my Father,we were trimming a pepper tree he was on the ladder I was holding the ladder,he was useing a chainsaw cutting large branches all of a sudden I here ahhh **** he says take the f---in chainsaw he calmly gets down the ladder looks at me and says whoops he chopped right through all the flesh and into the muscle it was about a inch wide and 6 inches long.I tell ya dont ever get hit by a chainsaw. All my pops is saying is let me just wash it off and put some peroxide on it and follow it up with some super glue and we will go finish on that tree,Im tellin him we need to go to emergency he says its a long way from my heart, anyway I convince him to go.I cant remeber the stitch count but it was alot, anyway that stubborn ass Marine,as soon as he got home he finished trimming that tree.
P.S Also when we were at the hospital,im smokeing a cig here he comes sayin lets get out of here there takin for ever I say nope your stayin,so he begins to open and close the wound with his fingers makeing it look like its talking, saying RYAN TAKE ME HOME HA HA HA,Hows that for a crazy ass dad.

Repeat of RH's experience while wrapping a SHEATHED MDP KISS. Only difference was 4 stitches in my right index finger. Can we get a class action suit on this one? The worst part was the fact that I'm on staff at the local hospital:o where I had to get stitched up! Later that week the CEO of the hospital asked me how I cut myself, while on a tour of our outpatient radiology center. After I told him about how it happened he said, "You COLLECT KNIVES!" So, I explained I also collect guns, the reply, "and GUNS!" Well, I also collect coins, Erte sculpture, Peter Max paintings, and Mercedes-Benz sedans. But he couldn't leave the knives and guns part alone....:(

The worst cut with a knife for me was a serrated knife that we used to use to cut fruit. I actually cut my left ring finger (don't ask me how... I was a kid and pretty damn stupid).
The worst cut ever was with a can lid. I stayed up all night doing homework, and at the PT job, my hand slip and my thumb went for the can lid. Made a flap on the top left corner and had to stitch it up (my first stitch :p) There were five stitches on the top of my thumb and boy they hurt bad when the doc took them out. I should thank my lucky stars that they didn't have to put stitches through my nails.

Back when i was a total dumd a#$ about knife safty ,when i was a kid.I was whittleing a stick with my dads old barlow, and the blade was dull enough that it slipped off the wood but not my thumb. Needless to say sliced a nice fillet off my thumb clear down to bone! Me scream, cry ,jump up,down pee pants run to mom you know the story. Anyway ,confronting dad as to why i was playing with his knife plus the fact that now ive a flat side on my left thumd and a medical bill ,well what can i say. Yes im an adult now and yes ive nicked myself a couple of times since.

Boy O' Boy, I dont feel alone anymore:D

Probally was 12 years old, just got in the mail a brand new Balisong, was a little heavier than any of the others I had before and it was fresh out of the package and oily - I started flipping it, not realizing the blade edge was opposite of any other butterflies i had owed before, needless to say I cut deep into my finger, right in front of the parents.....

....this is not a knife story, but damn sure cut like the best of them... It was the day after thanksgiving, I was on Mt Snow for a Beatiful full day of skiing, no problems the entire day, made my last run, went to the lodge, took off all my gear, now - walking out to my car, had the skis on my shoulder, but they were crossed, stopped and put them down to straighten them out when the front ski started to fall.....(close your eyes, lots of blood coming up) I went to grab the ski (brand new pair btw) with my bare hand instinctivly, next thing I knew I had cut to the bone my middle finger to my pinky finger, severed one tendon and knicked the two others -- that single day ended that seasons skiing and gave me 12 weeks of rehabilitation, in which I still cannot bend the tip of my pinky no matter how hard I try....

...yet another...working in a deli, one of my 1st jobs, using the good ole meat slicer....i dont need to say much more than that, aside from me taking the ladys order for some bloody roast beef too seriously  (actually just some good scars accross my knuckles)

I can't believe I missed this one:) . I'm always cutting my self, usually do to stupidity and not paying attention to what I'm doing.

I've gotten better with old age, the cuts are less frequent, and most times less severe.

But still every new aquisition isn't official till it draws a little blood, kinda like a right of passage that has to be constantly reaffirmed, ( much like falling off my motocycle, at least once at the beggining of the season), this kinda keeps me from any major accidents through out the year by reminding me of how dangerous some of my hobbies are.

Just some stupid knife wounds,

Age 14, tried to cut down a telephone pole with a Schrade Trapper:eek: , blade closed on my index finger, sliced the tendon that makes that finger extend, and bend,(learned on this occasion not to use a slip joint where a chainsaw is needed, and if your bleeding don't drink alcohol, and take aspirin, It thins your blood and you have a hard time stopping the bleeding). Oh yeah all cuts no matter how stupid require attention.

Age 22 Sharpening a SAK Tinkerer with the bench stone on my knee,(that right there, should tell you where this is goin')Wife in the background tellin' me, "you're gonna cut yourself, you're gonna cut yourself", me screamin', "Don't tell me I know what I'm doin'" me screaming, "S**T", as I miss the stone and drive 2" if the spearpoint into my thigh. Wife, "What did you say", me, silence, Wife, "Where's that blood comming from?" 2 stitches later, and lesson learned, always use your bench stone on a hard flat suface, (according to my wife my head doesn't count)

Age 38 Musicfest in PA, listening to some live tunes, drinkin' some beer,(alcohol comes into play once again) and eating a Bloomin' Onion,(deep fried whole onion), my wife and daughter decide they want some of my onion, so I whip whip out my newly sharpened Benchmade AFCK,hold the paper plate in my left hand, an proceed to to slice throughthe onion, but it doesn,t stop there it proceeds to pass through the paper plate and halfway throught tip of my middle finger , only to be stopped by my fingernail and bone.
A trip to the hospital and 4 stitches later, I'll never forget what the ER Doctor said, " It's a good thing it was a sharp blade, it made a clean cut", at which the ER Nurse replied, " Just think if it had been real dull you would have only gotten a bad bruise"

Moral of this story: No matter how old ya get, stupidity accounts for the majority of knife related injuries;)

I used to sharpen knives at a fish plant, anywhere from 7.5" inch fillet knives to 10-12" butcher Knives and some small fillet knives the old ladies used..... anyway I dropped one one day as I was returning it to the girl and cut right thru to the bone when I caught it. at the time my reflexs where faster then my brain, now a days I just let it hit the ground and hope for the best.

24 stitches on three fingers and they had to stitch a couple tendons back together.

I cut the tip of my right thumb off twice. The first time it grew back lopsided and the orange I peeled wasn't worth the cut. The second time I was cutting the fins of a catfish with a CS Paraedge neck knife. Who would have thought that after cutting the fins of four other catfish a AUS-6 bladed knife would still be razor sharp. The good news is the tip of my thumb is no longer lopsided.

I've been slicing myself a lot recently in my job, playing with new folders under the desk...

The worst was a while back. I was replacing a REKAT Fang in small of back IWB sheath and felt it tap my finger/knuckle. I was on the phone at the time and had to hang up quick - "Uh, I need to go now and drive to hospital".. It didn't need stiches in the end but had me worried driving there with blood poring out, trying to keep the thing closed. I felt like a real fool explaining it to the nurse.

My first bad cut was 4 or 5 years ago, getting the lid off of a tin can. Went to the bone on my right pinky.

second one was 2 years ago when playing with a POS out the front. (waving my magic:D hand past it to open/close it and JAB into my left. no stitches, but still don't have as much feeling in my left index.)

My friend was playing "throw the skewer into the ground" with metal skewers. Unknown to him was that his foot chameleonized to look like the ground.:D

I just bought a new M/A LCC yesterday.
First knife I ever nought with serrations.
I <used> to like to touch my thumb to the sharp edge of the knife to feel the sticky feeling of the edge.
Well, apparently that is not a good idea to do on serrations.. a very light touch gave me a stinging, one inch gash that was deep enough to blled for about 45 minutes till I got home from buying the knife and put ointment and a tight band aid on it.
Sounds like nothing compared to what I read here, but I was shocked...I barely touched the blade!
So how do I feel how wharp the edge is now?
Since I got my spyerco sharpmaker, I have no hair left on either my arms or my legs.
I am kind of leery of shaving patches of hair off my head :o/

For straight blades I lay the edge of the blade on my thumb nail and see if the edge digs in under it's own weight or just skids of the nail sideways, then I examine it under a 10X lighted magnifier and look for flatspots. Another way is to look down the edge with a bright light source shinining at a perpendicular angle to the blade and if ther are flat spots in the edge they will appear shiny as they reflect the light off of the flat spots.
