How close to rubbing the liner is acceptable?

I don't understand why some nice can't be centered but I had similar problem with a native chief, although not as bad as yours. Perhaps the blade is warped? At the end of the day just got to either sell it off at a loss or return it to the vendor as soon as you get it if it bothers you. I wouldn't rely on warranty support from any companies anymore. These knives are just too expensive to accept poor craftsmanship.

Unacceptable.

Then again, the military is easy to center DIY, if you are so inclined.
I've been centering blades a long time, I know most every trick in the book, and have had great success fixing many off center blades. This one can not be centered, unfortunately. That's why I sent it in because it's literally a hair away from touching the liner.

Welp, that’s some piss poor quality, and “service”. IMO, of course.

I’ve had a couple of run-ins with their customer service, and every time it’s pretty much “this is within spec, so you’re stuck with it”. Really burns you because you wait forever and get it back still buggered.

You pretty much just have to get a good one right from the jump because they refuse to fix a damn thing.

I’ve had absolutely stellar CS from some companies and makers, and really poor from others. I hate to say it, but I’ve been burned by Spyderco enough that I won’t buy another unless it’s in person, or coming from a fellow knife guy I trust.

If it actually turns out that this is in spec for them, I don't even no what to say. I'm not gonna jump the gun.

A little miffed that I guess we're gonna send this bad boy off again and spend the entire summer without it. I hope someone else that works the warranty department looks at it, and is not OK with how bad that is, because good lord if you breathe on it, it's rubbing. Ray charles could look at it and say that's way beyond a little off center.

Here's to hoping someone had a bad day at their warranty department and crap happens, and they actually do care. Sucks it takes so long back and forth multiple times but is what it is.

I can accept if a blade isn't perfectly centered as long as it functions properly, but as many have said that's just not acceptable even if it functions smoothly. If it isn't rubbing currently it will in time.

I probably own and use more Spyderco knives overall than any other singular brand of folder and I agree if that is actually "within spec" there is a problem.

Hopefully it gets addressed.

Long ago I purchased a Schempp Bowie that was way off center, just barely rubbing. I should have immediately sent the knife back. For tldr reasons, I sent it in for warranty. Twice! Each time Spyderco’s solution was to crank the pivot to the point it was BARELY openable, which would more-or-less center the blade.

I gave up after the second round trip to golden and took it apart myself. One of the liners seemed warped (to me, anyway). I half-sourced, half-fabricated a thicker than standard washer to put in one side. That came pretty close to fixing the centering while allowing suitable opening. .

I still have the knife and like it very much (in spite being immensely frustrated at the time). The ordeal was certainly not representative of Spyderco’s best work, especially for a premium model.

ETA: I hate to pile on….but it’s the truth. I didn’t even bother with my Para 3 LW.. I just hand that one out as a loaner knife when needed.

So one of the things I actually tried to center it was swapping in a slightly thicker washer, being as I have accumulated an absolute hoarder level of knife parts through the years I have screws, washers, clips, spacers and more for so many different blades, it's actually unhealthy lol

I happen to have proper metrology lab calibrated micrometers and calipers as well since I was a programmer/5 axis machinist for several large dod contractors.

When I say I'm pretty good at centering blades and I tried everything, I meant it. Without throwing the liners and blade on a cmm, my guess is the locations of the laser cutouts in the liners may be off, or the blade is ground wonky.

I'm actually surprised to hear of so many let downs from their warranty department. That's a bummer. I love the cutting edge steels they try and the geometry they go with. Support after the sale matters as well though.

The worrisome thing is that Sal hasn't said anything in this thread yet.

What do you say, Sal? 🤔

How did you acquire it? Something to be said with seeing exactly what you will be getting in person or using vendors with a no hassle return policy.

Were I stuck with it I would use it, if it starts rubbing or somehow whatever is causing the issue gets worse or causes other problems send it in.

Always pleased when someone cranks out "miffed" correctly.

Or as Tony Soprano would say, "miffled".. (genius writing).

Your knife objectively sucks. Sal Glesser Sal Glesser should jump in this thread and set you free.

I’ve never had any dealings with Spyderco’s warranty department, but I do have a few questions.

Is it possible the Military 2 is a clone?

What is the blade steel?

Was there a possibility of a blade swap?

This is from smkw, zero percent chance of a clone or blade swap, it has already been to spyderco and if you send them a clone they do not send it back. It's a crucarta military 2, they only come in 1 steel and that's cruwear.

It's Friday and it has only been a few hours, there's a good chance they haven't seen it yet.
