How did you justify your last knife?

I'll have to go with the consensus in my justification: if I want a knife, I get it.

Hey, you only live one right?

I justified my spyderco military because I had a bunch of mid range to low end knives and "needed" something nice...

The LE 806's in M4 were made in PE and CE, 250 of each, so I had to get at least one of each. Failure to do so was not an option...~!

If a straight razor counts, it was only $10. It was an old Genco with rusty blade and broken handle. I figured it would be good practice to restore and shave with it. It was, and it shaves great.

My previous several knives were justified by the fact that I made them (still not cheap, though).

Most of my folders were purchased because I wanted to practice making scales for that particular model.

I was searching for a decent TL-29 reproduction, and discovered the Klein electrician's two-bladed knife. Did a little scouring and searching and discovered that Home Depot and Ace Hardware supposedly carry it. Went in and searched high and low, only to discover that Home Depot didn't have any, and Ace Hardware had a dinky "Made in China" version. Thinking that it couldn't be too bad, I went and picked it up, only to discover that it really was poorly produced. Rough finish, the supposed "high carbon steel" turned out to be stainless that can't take an edge, and the springs are sure nail breakers.

Because of all that, I got irritated and ordered a real Klein electrician's knife in carbon steel. Hope it turns out better than the former.

Edit: Man, only half an hour later and I just ordered a Douk-Douk. Only justification for this is that one can never have too many Douk-Douks.

If I had to justify knife purchases, I'd have stopped buying knives a long, long time ago.

I was already paying through the nose for shipping from Australia for another blade... figured by getting a second one I'd be getting more goods per shipping fee. :D

Its was justified for the following reasons:

1)I needed an equal number of Benchmades and Spydercos
2)It would my the first "premium" steel blade, and I need to know how good ZDP-189 is
3)Compared to some of the BF members, my collection is a mere blip on the radar
4)I have some money in my pocket
5)It's going be the LAST knife purchase, because I already have more than could possibly be used in a lifetime and it's enough already!

Actually, I only have 4 of what I consider to be good EDC knives. The total value of these is about $220. Some here would have no problem spending twice that on one knife, so thanks for easing my conscience. ;)

Ooooh, those are really good justifications. I'm gonna use those on myself next time I see something I want.

Can anything beyond a second knife, in case the first breaks, be logically justified? ;) That being said, I justify my knives because they fill "holes." Feel free to exchange "need" with "want". LOL.

I need a big fixed-blade because my 3" EDC has limited ability as a camp knife. An RC-6 covered fixed-blade and 1095 steel. The Busse let me try INFI. Micarta? Check.

I need a small knife because a 6" camping knife isn't always appropriate or feasible.

I need a truck knife so I can have one that's always in my tool kit. Medium-sized beater = Griptillian.

A Delica because I didn't have a lock-back, FRN handle, or ZDP-189 steel. Another Delica covered VG-10 steel, full flat grind, and G-10 handle. Both also offer tip up/down and left-right carry which other knives I owned didn't have.

The first Sequel covers Axis lock, aluminum handle, and 154CM while the second takes care of D2. Mini-Reflex = auto.

A mini-Commander on order will cover liner-lock, wave opener, and recurve blade.

Sebenza for it's frame lock, S30V, and hollow-grind.

Hinderer takes care of flipper, 20CV, and another type of blade grind.

While I don't have one yet I'm sure I'll get a Tanto of some sort just so I can say I own an ugly knife. :D

LOL, I haven't had a legitimate justification for buying a knife in a seriously LONG time;) My great great great grandkids will still have plenty left to pass on to their kids!!

Today I finally broke down and got the Endura 4 with ZDP steel.

Well I thought I had some pretty silly motivations for buying the next knife but yours are right up there! :D
With me it usually goes like this: I see or read about some knife, and 'realize' I don't have anything in that particular category yet - if I do, I usually refrain from buying the knife. Now the problem is, categories can be endlessly refined. First there's folders and fixed, then fixed goes into combat and survival, then combat goes into single and double edged, then daggers go into type/size, etc, etc...
Do this long enough and you are always missing that one knife.

My current obsession is fixed blade EDC. My smallest so far is a Busse Game Warden and the largest a SAR4, but there's lots that fit in between, and they're all single edged. Busse only sells single edged (there are rare exceptions I know).
So I need some daggers too, already have a few Cold Steel but I want them up to 7" blades. I'm picky about sheaths too, don't want to have a custom one made for every blade I buy... Life is just SO tough! :)

I need help. :( :D

My wife's husband should have a nice EDC if he is to go out in public with her. Sigh, benevolent, aren't I?

I had been wanting a S&M ATS-34 Baby Sunfish every sine I mistakenly ordered a mahogony bone Baby Sunfish. I fell in heavy like with the way this pattern looked, felt and performed so I really wanted another one!! I found this one at a nice little knife shop in Hartsell, AL. The only thing I was willing to trade at this price level was my old BM 943 so I did! I miss my 943, but I had to have this puppy!

I justified my last purchase (digicam Millie with black blade, and orange Millie) by remembering that in 5 years or 50 years, every dang one of us is going to be worm food. And when our heirs go through our possessions, they will neither know nor care what we paid for a knife way back when.

Subject to the prerequisite that you can keep the lights on and save for retirement, life is too short not to have a killer arsenal of EDC knives. Carpe diem!
