How many look to a pocket?

Hearing a lot of this makes me happy I live in Texas. If anything, I'd want someone to see the clip of my Spyderco Manix 2 and mention something about it. I enjoy carrying a knife, and would love to talk about it were someone to mention it.

I'll be getting my CHL here pretty soon, so carrying a little knife in my pocket is the least of my concerns lol.

Ok, now let me ask you this. If you see a teenager with a crappy branded knife that looks like he's a trouble maker or would be up to no good, what's your first thought? Do you stereotype or do you think ok, maybe he just looks that way, but uses the knife for what it's intended for?

I used to be a long-haired teenager who carried a $6 knife, so I'll probably give him the benefit of the doubt. Of course, that was back before knives had pocket clips, so nobody actually saw it.

On the other hand...http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7583392&postcount=53

If he makes himself look like a "trouble maker," then that's what I'll be forced to assume he is. My first thought would be that he's probably carrying that knife for "self-defense."

Brad

I only say what I do because I've had problems with people in this area...They seem to be scared of knives and guns. Not that I flash mine arround or anything. But my son is no longer allowed to play with a few kids because their Parents don't think it's right to carry a knife or even go hunting.
He's 13 and only had a small buck that uses in the woods by our house.

I used to carry a Glock 78 on my belt till a cop in a Timmys stoped me as I was leaving and gave me an ear full about it. (I so thought the was gona take it)

As far as assisted openers go...I used to work at Snap on tools and we sold Kershaw BOA's. We were told (by Police) to take them off the shelf because they are illegal in Canada.

I've been collecting for most of my life and have a rather extensive collection which I keep on a seperate room under lock and key. I don't want one of my son's friends blabing to his parrents about my collection. I know that if at any time someone calls the police and says I have knives....If the cops want to check it out, I have to let them in to have a look. Or they will come back with a warrent. they may decide to take the whole lott.

I don't know...Maybe it's just me But I've had more than a few run in's with people who seem to be scared of Knives for some reason. But that said, I'd never walk arround with my Corby on my belt, just to see what would happen.

Greg,

It sounds like there's something wrong with your child's friends parents, and you son would probably be better off without their influence. What other people think is 'right' should be no concern of a law abiding citizen, but I know your son may not feel that way about his friends.

It's to bad we have to, but as with all our rights we have to use them and not be afraid of doing so. Unfortunately cops on the street can't know every law and often things tend to get made up on the spot (as a firearms owner this is a large problem). Know your laws, stay within them and enjoy your hobby.

Assisted opening isn't against the law at all, we have a Canadian sub forum here that explains it alot better than I can- head over there and have a read.

Keeping you knives locked up is a good idea with stupid teenagers around (friends, not your son :o ). Because yes, if someone blabbed and/ or made something up you're in for a hard time; but I'd also worry about the sticky fingers of other teens.

I guess it depends on where you live, im in liberal ville but still in the country and work in a machine shop so people are pretty laid back around here.

Don't let a few crappy laws and a few bad apples ruin your hobby

sometimes i catch a glance of a shiny metal clip. i dont really look long enough to see what knife they use.

I live in Canada so the last thing you want anyone to know, is that you have a knife.
They'll probably call the cops. And since just about any kind of knife is illegal here you could be arrested. They may even be able to get a search and seizure warrent for my house and confiscate my entire collection. A switch or assisted open is rated the same as having a silencer on a firearm...worth about 10 years each...My great grandchildren would have to finish my sentance.
So needless to say you don't see too many knives.

Man I hate this country.

Wrong on so many points, as my fellow countryman states below.

Every day I carry a knife, and not a SAK or something thats really sheeple friendly either. I carry a Delica 4 (or similar sized spydero) normally. If im back from any kind of outdoors activity I have a fixed blade on my belt and a large folder (military or similar) in my pocket. This includes stopping at the store for a snack or drink. I have never had someone freak out over my knife use/ carry and I live in liberal southern ontario.

Unless you live in some other Canada assisted opening is legal for carry. In fact you can carry/ own ANY knife other than a switch blade or gravity knife, so long as it's not intended for use as a weapon.

I use my knives responsibly and never try (or have had the need) to hide them from anyone.

BTW, carrying a pocket knife is not grounds for a search warrant; nor is carrying a pen, spoon, flash light, book, weasel, shoes, keys, bag, lightbulbs or 8 track tapes. If you think your knives can be confiscated from your home, you must think that they're illegal. If that's the case why would you post about your illegal knife collection on the internet?

So please, get your facts right. This country isn't perfect but on the whole it's a pretty nice place to live. If you dont like it no one's making you stay...

BTW, I see knives on a somewhat regular basis.

I ask everybody that I see with a pocket clip so that I can catalogue mentally what people around here are carrying. Mostly Kershaw, with a smattering of CRKT, Spyderco and Buck. I too have had children ask about my knives, and as I also carry neck knives often I have had my fair share of adults comment- my favorite being a gas station attendant- "Is that a knife?" me- yes Her-"Isn't that a concealed weapon then?" Her co-worker-"If you can see it how is it concealed???" I laughed and left.

I almost had a gun drawn on me for asking about a clipped knife. My first trip to New York my wife and I were eating at a diner. I saw 2 police members enter and sit next to me, noticing the gentleman had a knife in his pocket. We finished our meal and I approached the officer, explained I was a knife collector and asked what knife he had. Upon hearing this his younger female partner almost jumped up while putting her hand on her gun! Her partner looked at her, gave her a laugh, and tossed the CRKT 14K summit to me to have a look. I couldn't help but give a chuckle, the overreaction and undderreaction shown. My wife admitted later she almost bought me the same knife a month before but wasn't sure if I would like it. Needless to say it still isn't in my collection......

Oh and one more thing I wanted to mention.
In this same town, a classmate of my Nephew was suspended because his mother packed a damn butter knife in his lunch.
While I realise this is a "School" thing it does show the mental attitude toward "weapons" that is developing in this society.
And that's what I cant stand about this country.

I do this constantly no matter where I'm at... Once at Burger King, the guy taking my order had a Strider SMF clipped to his pocket. Sad thing was when I mentioned it to him, he didn't even know an SMF from a SNG. Nevertheless, it was a nice knife.

If I do notice, I may try and see what make. I don't say anything since I rarely if at all see anyone carrying a clip that would be worth starting a conversation over. Mostly CRKT's, S&W and big 5 knives.

I did see a Suburban down in Federal Way with a Strider FWP sticker.

I was suspended from high school 16 years ago for a 2 inch blade lockback Case folder. It was in my backpack and found during a 'shake down' when pulled into the principle's office. I wasn't even using it and still got suspended 3 days. That sort of mentality has been a long time coming. I live in Florida with some of the best knife and conceal carry laws in the US so where you live probably doesn't much matter when it comes to the liberal school system.

Some interesting answers guys. I used to carry a schrade simon in my wallet to school, mostly to use in shop class. Nobody said anything, in fact, the teacher and i used to check out each others knives!

interesting. The point wasn't who looks below the belt, it was who notices knives on people and what do you do.

What an interesting thread topic!
Never thought to bring this up myself, but I ALWAYS scope out clips. lol
Sometimes I worry for the person being viewed may think I'm "checking them out"

But in all seriousness I live in Southern California and I have seen several Spydercos, a few Benchmades, and once met an older gentlemen with a William Henry! I am always amazed when I see anything other than your Wal Mart or your Made In China No Name knife.

Seeing a Spyderco, BM, Kershaw, and or any other equal or higher end brand gets me excited and inclined to start a conversation out of it.

The Irony of the whole ordeal is that just about EVERY person I have ever met with the above brands weren't even Knife Enthusiasts!

Some said they were gifts, others were like "oh is that the brand/model?". My jaw drops every time. More than half the people I've spoken to about their quality knife are unaware of what they have or don't know anymore than "yeah it's a great knife and have had it for years".

Still good to know they are carrying a reputable brand amongst a fairly private community who are in the know of these brands.

Don't see to many around jersey but when I do it's usually a flea market knife! Every now and then I'll see someone with the knife clipped to the outside of the pocket and giggle to myself :D

I sometimes forgot to clip mine back inside my jeans when I worked for an A/C company. I kept it out for easier access.

I occasionally notice a clip in passing. It's not a location I tend to check out on guys.

I check out anywhere that could house a weapon. I guess I am just a little paranoid after being stabbed once.

RE:OP-I work part time at a bar now doing security and it is my job to notice knife clips because I have to tell patrons to put them in their vehicles or go home. Sometimes we strike up a brief convo about it if it catches my eye.
