How much do you spend on Traditionals?

Shoot. I came over here to chill out from the fixed blade purchases, or so I thought. Just got a Fremont Jack (sweet knife). And was/am looking at the Viper. And others. Oh, crap. I'm knife poor now. But hey!, it ain't money thrown away, just "invested". That's better than the wife's "investment" in yet another pair of shoes.

as ive mentioned earlier, the Viper is awesome for real! Love it.

I tend to lean more towards the older Traditional's and I try to spend as little as possible on them. For me the challenge is in getting the knife in looking for as cheap as I can which tends to be easier with most older knives.

The bulk of my traditional patterns were bought for between $5-$10... :)

Wish I had that kind of cash.
Most months lately have been hovering at zero dollars spent, due to being astoundingly broke.

You are not alone!
I read title of post and took it a little different.
New knives average $80-$100, although i did score
a sweet Bobby Toole for $200.
But i have been known to get yard sale knives as low as .25 cents (very good Boker)
I am not single anymore, so I am very particular about what i buy, none on credit.

I went a little overboard the first two years I got into knives (2012 and 2013). I had an extra income source that was able to fund it without significant financial impact for a while there.

I wish I had set myself a monthly or annual budget and stretched it out longer. Too many too soon. Now I'm essentially all spent-out, knife wise. I still like them, but don't really want any more.

I don't know, but my wife certainly lets me know when I've spent my knife budget. I then do side jobs for neighbors or after school tutoring for a little extra.

How much do I spend on Traditionals? Probably more than I should at times, but...

I will not allow buying knives or any hobby item to develop to the point that it seriously stresses my finances. I have wants just like everyone else. I have all my needs covered that I am aware of. I have to say that I have passed on knives and that decision directly conflicted with my desires.

There are some that I keep postponing purchasing due to short term financial demands. Often that means that I will never acquire them because in some cases, once the opportunity is past, it does not necessarily return. I passed on attending Blade the last two years. I felt that was significant.

Great point rimfire. I also want to point out that while you might feel that you missed out on the opportunity to obtain a knife because you didn't act on it when it was available, there's always another one right around the bend that you'll want just as bad. I'm joining this hobby pretty late in the game and there's many knives that I wish I had been around to snatch up, but there's still more on my list than I can afford. So, it's not like it's hampering my ability to collect knives that I simply "must have".

Another good point. Collect something that's in your budget. I've found a lot of happiness in collecting Schrade USA Old Timers. They are good little knives and can be found for $10 or so. Even got an old 18OT for $6.50 a couple weeks ago.

feel free to delete the thread if it offends you. I am just curious leaning more to the collectors here. There are just as many collectors as there are people who don't like to admit they are. Not trying to be tacky at all.

When I post in black, that's me posting as a member.

When I post in Blue or red, I'm posting as a mod.

As a member, I consider answer to the question none of anyone's business. But posting it breaks neither BF rule nor Traditional posting guideline. So, my comments remain in black.

My accumulation is now to the point that I usually sell some off to buy new ones that suit my fancy. Because of the turnover, I only spend about $100 a month of "new" money.

Whats the old saying?-if you have to ask the price you can't afford it.
I digress (as usual).
Tacky? Try this for size-I prefer not to agonise over dollars and cents after the bills are paid. Neither do I go overboard buying knives.
My strategy is very simple.
Look at the calendar and you will notice a number of celebratory gift giving days throughout the year- including Birthday,Christmas, Easter,Fathers day,Wedding anniversary,St Florian's day,etc etc. You can pretty easily end up buying 7 or 8 brand new GECs every year using this"buy your own gift" system*.
Then of course there are the impulse purchases-" but Sweetie, It's a limited edition knife. If I don't order one they'll all be gone.".
Add to this the cheapies(usually oldies but goodies) off ebuy and you're looking at maybe 10-15 knives per annum.

* nearly forgot-you need to buy a gift for wife(s),husband(s),partners, main squeeze ,best mates or dudes who put wise ideas on BF .

Too much. That will have to be specific enough. Never know when SHMBO looks at the forum. She thinks I've bought stock in VCM3. If she only knew how many I look at and breath a sigh of relief when someone else says, "I'll take it!"

I have pulled up more than a few knives and been pretty happy that somebody else got to them before I did. I also have watched my share of auctions hoping that somebody would bid them up enough that I could justify not bidding myself. I wouldn't spend enough to get myself into trouble, but I sure do appreciate when somebody takes that urge away from me. I know that my wife would appreciate it as well, if I was ever stupid enough to tell her how many knives I consider on top of the ones I actually buy. :D

I've found that if you keep the Wife happy (Casino money) she will stay off of you a little on the knife buying lol.

bout 100 a year. But I am a student so that's the most I can afford. if it's a really good knife then I might drop 2-300

One good thing about these traditional knives, seems there is something out there to accommodate all budgets

That's the fact that makes it work for me. I've set myself a budget of $20/month, so I realize that there are many knives (e.g., GEC) that I'll never own, but it's still fun to look at the photos and enjoy those types of knives vicariously. And there are plenty of knives out there that DO fit my budget and I've really enjoyed finding some, even if it means I have to work on developing my patience. This crazy new hobby builds a lot more character than I expected!

For a period of years I would buy two or three knives a month, sometimes 5 or so depending on what came my way and what was being issued. But as of the first of this year when I became infected with cynacism due to the amount of what I would call junk, as in poor F&F, lack of QC and totally unacceptable customer service I've really backed off. Now I have to have in hand for the most part and have been concentrating on vintage . So I've gone from $100 to $500 per for 2 to 6 knives to $100 to $300 per for 2 or 3 knives.

By the way, I attribute my cynacism basically to all of the information and warnings and guides posted on this forum. For which I am extremely thankful as it has probably saved my can numerous times.

Obviously a fake post. Nobody could possibly credit these forums for buying less knives. :p

(This post is made tongue-in-cheek, no offense is intended.)

So far this year I have bought 2 knives. One is a Queen micarta Country Cousin and the other is my GEC # 73. I did pay for a BladeForums Forum knife but it will not be available until later this year. Wow, 3 knives! It has been a busy year for knife buying for me.

I spend too much, and haven't bought anything since, well, the beginning of August.

I'm glad I don't spend as much as some in this thread ;)...
