How much do you spend on Traditionals?

As i live in the UK the price of a good quality knife from the USA attracts a hefty import tax plus a handling charge, i am currently waiting on two inbound GECs. If you say that a knife that costs $70 in the US will cost about $113 in the UK and that comes after waiting between 8 and 30 days, you will see that our addiction is a bit pricey.LOL...

Good question. I had make myself a limit to 100.00 EUROs per month. But I rarely got it up to that in the past few months / years. Mostly it were up to 120.00 EUROs.
My poor wallett... but a man needs to have a hobby, doesn´t he?

I tried setting up a real budget. I discovered it took some of the fun out of it. I like to be spontaneous when I see something that catches my eye. I look at my current financial situation and slightly forward (usually a month) and make a decision on buying. I have purchased more than a couple knives this year. This one statement was excellent.

More than my wife knows and probably more than I should. It averages about 200/month. Just depends on if something interests me. Steven

About 100 dollars a month, maybe more on occasion.

Cory, I too am a Schrade/Old Timer accumulator...darn good knives, many at bargain prices. I dabbled with the high-end brands for awhile. They were nice, but at the end of the day, I like to carry an Old Timer stockman just as well, if not more. I certainly use it (and similar Buck, Camillus, Western stockmen) a lot more than my fancy knives, and without the worry about it what might happen to it. As a bonus, my wallet is less stressed!

I'm sure like many here, I like to root through farmers markets and other spots you can find a well used, hopefully not abused old knife. But for new or recent used ones, what do you go for? I've gotten very picky in my knife age, and have only bought Traditional Forum annual knives, Case Bose annuals, a few customs, some select GEC and Queen pieces. I've noticed a lot of people on here spend a lot of money on many knives. All have been quality knives. However, if you had a hundred bucks a month to spend on knives, would you buy a few high quality customs over the year or buy cheaper knives every month?

BTW, I wish I had a hundred bucks a month to spend on knives ;)...

It's a darn shame that they went under. They are great knives that were made in a way that just about anybody could afford one. I am baffled that they still go as cheaply as they do. I know that there's literally a million of them out there, but it still feels a little like stealing every time I get one for under $10.

I'd be much more likely to pick up a couple Old Timers every month than save up for just a couple knives a year. I'm lucky in that Old Timers appeal to me just about as much as custom knives do. So, I can get my fix without breaking the bank. There's really just a couple knives that I feel like I'd want a higher quality for.

I've been adding about one knife a month. But the way I look at it is they are something concrete that can be sold or traded in the future if needed. I have a lot of friends that spend the same amount I would on a knife on one round of golf, and at the end of the day there is nothing left of that.

I probably pick up a new knife on average every two months. The last two were not a traditionals. And yes, they cost more than what most GEC's cost.

Cory, I concur 100 percent. I too am sorry Schrade went under (along with Camillus, Western, and others). A lot of tradition and excellence lost to history. But as you said, there are still a lot of good Schrades out there, and that's good news.

Recently, I picked up a brand new 70s era Old Timer 34OT, with its brown box and sleeve, for 20 bucks. Superb craftsmanship. Snaps like a gator. A darn fine knife, outshining even some of the high-end knives I've paid a lot more for in the past.

I oiled and sharpened it, and dropped it into my pocket, and have felt like a millionaire ever since!

Well, I tell you what. I'm feeling generous right now, so if you feel like you might want that 20 bucks back I'll go ahead and take that rotten old knife off your hands for you. The thing's got to be going on 40 years old. I just can't, in good faith, let you walk around with that thing in your pocket. Heck, I'll even throw in a brand new 2014 model. :p

OK I thought about this & I'll say...
Because of a fixed variable :) ... both , not enough & , too much.
If that makes any sense at all.;)

I definitely spend wayyyy too much each month on my knife/gun/antiques; probably in the range of a small family of four's living expenses.

if you collect it pays not to have a wife and kids !

I will say that my knife spending has cut down my gun spending dramatically. It's a lot easier to explain the sudden appearance of a $50 dollar knife than a $500 pistol. Plus, knives use considerably less ammo.

cory I was into guns long time before blades-- what actually got me buying knives was : " I could buy 4 or 5 knives of high quality for the same price as my factory made rifle...."--but still the only reason my collection is so large and I spend so much, I have nobody to take care of but myself and my cats and dogs.

and I just like to see the efforts of craftsman, I consider myself first and foremost an art collector, my art is just in the form of weapons.
