How old were you when you started carrying a knife?

I'm not quite sure. It was a long time ago. I think I was 8, might have been younger. My dad let me have an old case knife with carbon steel blades to carry as my own. It was older than I was.

Mine was an Imperial Schrade Kamp King, purchased with paper route money at age 12. Other than informing my parents of my intentions, I asked no permission or advice from them and received none, even the usual cautionaries (motorcycles was another story ). It was completely my decision, accepted by Mom and Dad as my concern and not theirs, and they never laid down any rules about when or where to carry or what to do with it, trusting me to behave responsibly. It worked. From the experience I gained a sense of independence that may be somewhere these days at the core of my interest in knives. That, and I like shiny sharp things. :D

I was 7.
My mother bought me my first knife when I started school. I need something to sharpen pencils. Most of the kids had knives in the pocket or backpack.

I have had knives as long as I can remember ( I'm 32 now) My grandpa would bring me a few (case, boker, western, schrade) every time he came home to visit ( he lives in Mich. Retired from FORD) He would never buy my brother or me toys, said it was a waste, at the time I didn't understand but now I'm so glad ! But I didn't really start EDC a knife until I was around 10~12 & have ever since !

Tuff Nut blue jeans came with a cheap Barlow style knife and I was 7 when I weaned off knickers for blue jeans to get the free knife. Still have the red handled knife but it's a wreck from the 2nd. grade abuse.

Let's see... I was 16 when I got my first locking knife - a Gerber EZ Out, half serrated. I was 14 or 15 when I got my first slipjoint - a Victorinox Recruit. I found a Victorinox Tinker in the park when I was 10 or 11 and shoved it in my pocket. I don't have any of those knives any more. My wife broke the Gerber by trying to pry open a window with it. The two Victorinox' I have no idea where they are.

I was seven when I joined the cub scouts. My dad gave me a blue cub scout knife. I haven't seen that knife in years.

I've had a knife in my pocket ever since.

12 years old. A cheap lockback with black plastic handles and thumbstuds. Obviously, I've since moved on to better knives. :D

9 years old in Cub Scouts
A small Rogers pen knife with a razor sharp 1" blade, for sharpening pencils.

By 11 years old Dad confiscated my collection (5 knives) because I was not doing my homework.
Of course I knew where he kept them, so I would borrow one at a time, then return it.

I don't remember how old I was (7 or 8 maybe), but I do remember abusing my first knives more than the hockey mask guy - constantly throwing them into trees and into the ground with nary a cleaning them other than to scrape the previous days mud off of them with my fingernails or a piece of tree bark. Never had a blade break amazingly enough.

I was 12(pretty young compared to most here!), the knife was a Haller(That' s a german brand, don' t know the model).

I was 7 years old, and I still have the knife.
I don't know who made the knife or how old it is....an uncle gave it to me.

BTW, I cut myself the very first day that I had it. :o

I was 12yrs old.It was a case canoe.I was in the boy scouts at the time.I still have it somewhere around here.Haven't seen it for at least 6 months.

I was about 8 years old. My father gave me a Vic SAK Spartan and taught me how to use and care for it. Still carry that very same knife and still use it.

BTW, I cut myself the very first day that I had it. :o

Haha yes, it was kind of funny, I cut myself in the store, where I was still considering whether to buy it:DThere was blood all over the blade, it was a pretty deep cut, but i wanted that knife so badly, I just wiped it off secretly and paid with my left hand:D

I was 8 and my dad bought me a plain edge Spyderco Delica. I recently did a thread on it so I won't get into detail. It now resides in the bottom of the Red River.
