How old were you when you started carrying a knife?

The general thinking is only a gangster would have a knife on him.
A good reason to: 1) select a non-gangster-ish knife, something that can never be mistaken for a weapon. SAK or traditional Case for instance; 2) not otherwise act like or hang with gangsters; 3) become involved in Scouting, outdoor club, hunting, or some other activity that requires a pocketknife.

If you're under 18, your primary 'job' in life is to obey the Ps' house rules. They say "no knives", then it's No Knives. Not worth the hassle nor the consequences, if you know what I mean.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

i started at 6, red handled spyderco ladybug from my uncle, but ive had knives from long b4 that. my grandmother was a tomboy, she started a collection for me that i still have today. when i was born i had more knives than i did clothes. pretty much full of cheap-o's and everything miniature.

Plus my parents and society frown upon knife carrying.

If the 'rents say no, then that's the rule. As far as society frowning on carrying a knife, then you must live in the UK, or in a very liberal inner city here in the US. Today, everyone knows I always have a pocket knife with me, they know it's sharp and they call for me whenever someone needs a cutting tool. When and where I grew up, all the kids had a pocket knife, just like everyone had a bicycle and a ball glove and bat. And no one ever got into fights with them...not saying we never got into fights tho...:D Just never brought a knife (or a baseball bat) into it. And no one ever lost a finger or had a eye poked out!

I'm got my first knife when I was 8. It was given to me by my next door neighbor. He had just retired from US Steel after 40 years of service (when he passed, I got his retirement watch. That's how I know when he retired). I still have it some 46 years later. Not too sure what it is, but it's got MOP handles and the single blade says Sheffield England on it. My second pocket knife is a Craftsman given to be by my Dad when I turned 10. The first one I ever bought was a Barlow, and I was 12 at the time. I got it from McVey's Hardware. And I've still got my first Boy Scout knife.

Wow...time flies, and I'm old...:D

I remember my Dad showing me his old scout knife from his Boy Scout days. I was about 6 I think. He taught me the safe use principles. I was surprised after the lesson when he gave me the knife. I wish I still had it, but I don't think it lasted very long in my care. I did recently find my own Boy Scout knife.

Well, I'm 14 now... just got into the knife thing at about 12... got a cheap Frost Cutlery linerlock

I was hooked, moved on to a Gerber Para... broke it

Then I got my Griptillian 551 last year... Never leave home without it or my new Spydie Tenacious

An older boy, Wayne, actually threw a knife at me from across the railroad tracks when I was about 6 (1959.) It hit in the dirt about 5 feet from me, I picked it up and ran. It was a black 2 blade pen knife, Imperial I believe, and even though my father took it from me once as soon as I figured he had forgotten about it I took it back. I've never been without one since. I won a sheath knife with a Solingen steel blade and stag (fake?) handle at the State Fair when I was about 8. I liked to practice throwing it into pine trees in the woods nearby and eventually lost it.

I was 6 or 7 (I'm now 57).

My dad gave me a pocket knife that he traded a cigarette lighter for in about '43 while he was stationed in England. Have no idea how old it is, but dad said it was well used when he got it. It was my EDC well into the 60's. It currently has cracked scales, a broken blade, and is a little loose with a main blade that is very well worn. In the 70's I met the man dad traded with and the gentleman still had the lighter and he gave it to me. I forwarded the two items to my son who is the designated keeper of family military items. I cut a lot of things with that knife, including myself many times. Dave

I live in Malaysia. People here are unlike you guys in the US. It's largely a sheeple society. We have no natural disasters and so usually are unprepared for any kind of emergencies that may require tools such as a knife. If I had a Victorinox attached to my keys, that may be alright. But as a standalone pocket knife, that would shock people.

amazing CB...no knives, but you DO have the F1 race at Kuala Lumpur! We had one here up until the early 70's at Watkins Glen, NY. But somehow that got screwed up and we lost it. I miss it.

I had my first knife at 4. It was a little imitation SAK about an inch-and-a-half long that my father misguidedly gave to me, for no other reason than I liked it and he didn't. I'm 21 now, and my Sebbie follows me everywhere like a gunmetal puppy.
The enduring pursuits are always the right ones.

My dad gave me a Buck 110 knockoff when I was 4 years old. The lock broke on it and I nearly cut my pinky off with it, so my parents took it away and then I didn't get another knife until I was 9 years old for Christmas. I had that knife for a while until I lost it while fishing.

As I mentioned I lost my first I was carrying at age of 9 in,early 70',and then was common for all boys to have some kind of single bladed slipjoint. And it took me a while but I have found book mentioning old psychological experiment done by Huguette Hugon Derquennes.Basically she picked children from 7-12,took them to the village, and gave them nothing but slipjoint and library,no TV,no car,no toys.So children instinctively reinvented some some old and forgotten games,so hypothesis was that children owning just knife and forced to discover variety of use would be more imaginative, more observant, bold, more inventive, etc. And no child had stabbed or cut other.
And today boy with penknife would be dragged by special police units from school.

Yeah, no knives, but carjackers here carry a parang (or machete). We've got F1 for the past 10 years or so now. :)

I would get my sons a knife each when they are older. I was thinking it would be a sheeple-friendly Victorinox but I've never been comfortable with the way the blades snap back when closing.

I'm 30 now, and it shows how crazy everything(laws),have gotten, But I just turned 9 and my Dad got me a small duel bladed Oldtimer, I used to carry it to school, and I spesificly remember my art teacher borrowed it from me to cut Something. Then the Next Christmas,(Rambo was Big time then, and A-team too) I Got the buck Survival knife with the sawback and all the stuff inside the handle and the spikes on the gaurd,(forget the model name/number, Along with a Red rider BB gun, The next year I got a 22 Marlin.

Just out of diapers!! It was a Case Sodbuster. Just ordered another one! :)

I think maybe I got Yall beat on this one...Dad made me a knife out of an old crosscut saw blade while I was still in diapers... they were the cloth kind, I guess I was maybe 2 and I'm just shy of 40 now..He made us moccasians from deer hides so we would'nt get stickers in our feet and my brother and I wandered the feilds behind our house for hours playing Tarzan..I remember the sound the hammer made when he was shaping it. I've been "hooked" ever since! It was about 6 inches long with an antler handle..I've still got and it will still shave hair off my arm. Anrkst6973

I used knives since I was 8, but never really started carrying my own until 13. Reason for that was because I cut my pinky down to the bone when I was 10 or so. I was gouging out a hole in a bottle cap holding a vic classic icepick-style. I stayed away from knives for a few years after that. :o

I remember very clearly the one time I cut myself pretty bad when I was probably 10 and was playing with a retractable paper cutter in my Dad's office. He specifically warned me not to play but I was convinced I wouldn't cut myself. But I did and it taught me to respect the blade.:o

Knowing this, I'm still amazed by how young some of you guys were when you were given your first knives.

My dad got me a cheap lockback knife when i was 14..........................like 3-4months ago LOL.

I started carrying a knife in 1975. Buck 110. I was 14 or 15.....
