How old were you when you started carrying a knife?

My mother gave me a nice SAK for my first big scouts camping trip (I guess I was around 13 or so).

It has my name engraved on the scale and a chain to keep it attached to my belt. I still have it and use it on occasion. :)

I was not even 10 (can't remember exact age). It was at most the early 1980s. Incredibly, it was a Swiss Champion, given to me by a very kind, grandfatherly like neighbour, a guy who was a regimental sergeant major of a Canadian infantry regiment in WW2. Incredibly, I still have the SAK, but don't really use it anymore. I am planning to refurbish it and give it to my son.

6. Got a single blade SAK which was my dad's when he got his first job when he was 15. He told me that going into "real" school aka Gr 1 was a milestone for me. Since then I have gotten a few more knifes from him.

Now I mark my own milestones (birthdays, new jobs ect) with knifes.

Got a Chinese SAK clone when I was about 9 or 10. I kept that for probably 5 years then got a cheap stainless handled serrated lock back (Rostfrei!!!) when I was about 15. I carried that for years until I found out about our stupid knife laws. I'm lucky I didn't get caught or I would have a criminal record!

For me it was my grandfather's old Camillus airforce automatic when I was in kindergarten. Stuck it in my backpack and off I went. A short talking-to later taught me very quickly that (much against my own personal belief) there are some places where carrying a knife is a bad idea.

I believe I was 8 or 10. Some no name stockman. Tarnished and one of the three blades broken off, but used for about ten years with no problem. Really liked that knife.

I'm 40, grew up on a small farm, can't remember when I started. about the time I got pockets I guess. I remember in 4th grade the teacher commonly borrowing it. it was a small pen knife.

the FIRST knife that i received was a SAK vic cant remember what it has in it, its in my shooters box in the closet under some stuff, but i was oh about 8 maybe older but i never carried it wasnt really into carrying knives at that age, but in '06 when i bought my Ti Lite zytel was the first knife i ever carried.

Too long ago to remember...Cub Scout age for sure, but I almost remember acquiring a small slipjoint from an aunt earlier on...;)

Ray :)

I really can't remember that far back. I was maybe 6 or 7 when I started carrying a very small pen knife. I graduated to a 'Trim Trio' at about age 9 (when my allowance was enough to buy one), and Dad gave me my first real fixed blade at about age 10 or 11.

Ten years old, I think. I'd owned it for some time before that, but wasn't allowed to carry it.

I don't remember ever owning or allowed to carry knives. I'm 36 now and I just got my first knife which I EDC. Now THAT makes me the oldest in this thread.

Im 21 now, and I still remember the day my dad gave me my first SAK. I was 6 and I had that knife and that kinife only until i started collecting when i was about 13 or 14.

Wait. You guys are allowed to carry your knives???

We had to carry a pocket knife. It was part of our Boy Scout uniform inspection.

I'm no longer involved with Scouting, but "pocketknife" is a universal item on every Ten Essentials list I've seen. Anyone who hikes, backpacks, or spends time outdoors should be familiar with the Ten Essentials...

I understand. Just that I have never been involved in Boy Scouts. Plus my parents and society frown upon knife carrying. The general thinking is only a gangster would have a knife on him. Probably that's why I still haven't revealed my knife in their presence yet.

When I turned 10 my father took me to the local hardware store and allowed me to pick out a slipjoint from the case of John Primble Belknap knives. I picked a 4-blade congress, probably because it had more blades than most of the others. :o I've been carrying a knife ever since.
