How public are you with your knives?

Everyone I know and work with are aware I am a knife enthusiast. They ask me questions about knives and know that I can advise them about knives. Most are envious of my collection and I have had no negative reaction to carrying and using any and all of my knives. Common sense should determine when a large folder or fixed blade should be deployed. Knives are tools that can not be replaced for thier intended purpose. Knives predate virtually every common convenience that now exist so acceptance should be universal.

I open carry, here in PA. Most people don't notice the 1911, so a knife is pretty much a non issue....:D

More disrespectful than those who consider you some kinda axe murderer because you carry a knife....OF ANY KIND....AND AREN'T SHY ABOUT SAYING AS MUCH? I think that sheeple is incredibly kind, considering the way they think of us knife owners. I believe them to be ignorant, unrealistic and ....OK...I'll stop at stupid. Unless stupid actually means....has no clue. The rest of you can give them all the slack you like...since they clearly give knife aficionados NO slack of any kind....so there ya go. SHEEPLE!!!! .... because they deserve it. Dumbasses! LOL

I don't like the term sheeple, because it's disrespectful. That said, I live in a state where most people carry a knife, and so having a knife with you, and pulling it out doesn't tend to raise eyebrows. To answer your specific questions:

- I tend to have an understanding of folks in my surroundings. I generally do not take out my knives to show them around or talk about them, for the same reasons I don't take out my conceal carry firearm. There's not really a need to communicate the fact that I am carrying tools to others.

- I don't tend to bring up knives around non-knife folks, which is reciprocated when those sorts of folks don't try to entangle me in a conversation in their hobbies they know I don't share. It tends to work out for everybody.

- I don't wear knife-related clothing often, because I only have a couple of shirts.

- I do post up pictures of my knives on social media, as I have both an Instagram and a Flickr that I make no attempt to hide as belonging to me. I'm not ashamed of being a knife-owner. All of my friends, coworkers, and family know that I'm a knife guy, and in the office, I'm the knife guy, so I've been approached often by coworkers and friends asking for knife advice, which I'm glad to give.

- Politics of any kind don't really belong in General, so I will refrain from any discussion there.

Agreed, luckily sheep are not complaining about it....

I carry a concealed handgun any time I'm out of the house. A knife is pretty mild compared to a gun. I bring out my folder if I need to cut something. I don't make a big deal out of it, and neither does anyone else. Some folks show an interest, and I'm glad to show it to them if they wish.
Just accept your knife as a tool, and it's likely that so will other folks, unless you're in NYC.

I take it out and use it when needed, and don't make a big deal out of it or draw attention to myself. I don't talk about knives with people unless they ask (which happens more often than you would think actually!) However, I live in Texas and we are generally pretty knife friendly.

This is me too. And sometimes I do wish I were in Texas. In LV, we also have city and county ordinances to consider, and I'll leave it in the car if I'm going through a security checkpoint.

But criticism or contempt from random people who are a little too concerned with what I'm doing is generally not welcome or met well.

Nice. Feel better?

Unless we're in NYC? Let me clue you in. New York is a big city, lots of people, diverse neighborhoods and communities, and a busy police force. You don't give any of the above any grief and the odds are, they won't even notice you.

Not all of it is specifically urban. We've got fields and streams. We've got streets of small private houses. No, it's not Mayberry. But it's not all the Manhattan District Attorney, either.

Pulled out a knife to open candy bags for a parade guy was like wow man that's a big knife it was a zt 300 I think. I laughed and said it was a big bag of candy

My knives are legal in the places I use them. My use of them is legal. My use of my knives is not rude, improper, unsafe, or impolite. So I'm as public to the extent my use of them is public.

If a person is self-conscious of their knife use and everything about it is legal and proper and the issue is worrying about what people might think, my opinion is the person has some issues aside from the knife that they need to address.

I use them when I need to cut stuff.
If I pulled them out when there wasn't stuff that needed to be cut, that would be weird, and people would think me to be a weirdo.

I don't hide use either...that makes you look weird too, like you have something to hide.

I don't like the term sheeple, because it's disrespectful.

It's meant to be. Sheeple are either a) afraid of inanimate objects, b) afraid of ability to do things in the real world, or c) all of the above. As such they don't deserve any respect whatsoever. Let them go off with Trigglypuff into their safe space and await slaughter, but I won't suffer their nonsense for a second.

Sheeple. I think I understand them. :-))
I'm not afraid of a gun by itself but somebody carrying one is a higher potential threat than somebody who isn't. Who carries a large blade into a supermarket will be watched more carefully by me than the average hipster who doesnt.
If I'd be too old and by myself I wouldn't care much about those risks but with kids I got a bit paranoid.
Also while keeping an eye on higher potential threats I'd also stock up on arms to counter them thus I'm understanding the sheep dogs as well.
No need to give them derogatory names. Most of us are both in different situations and to a different extent of course.

I am not public at all! It depends on the people I am with, but with people that might not view a knife as a tool, I will put my knife behind me, flip it, and then cut, so they are not like, "oh no, a switchblade", obviously a mass murderer here! When I am doing farmwork, I could care less, or at my first job. But even with my machetes, I just do the work I need them for, I don't show off and flip it up in the air or pretend to be Conan or something. At my second job, that is another story. I only carry a knife with a dark colored pocket clip and dark handles so it doesn't show. I also think that metallic/silver, satin or mirror finishes make the knife look bigger and more entimidating, so I try and use acid washed or coated blade knives at my second job. Which is understandable, it is a hospital. Most there know I have a knife at all times anyway, but they don't mind cause I use it like I am supposed to, as a cutting tool, and I do use it there a lot, just reponsibly. I bet I would get treated differently if I was playing with a balisong knife walking down the hall.
