How should Collector Knives sell GEC SFO's

Well that seemed to work. Except for the winning part. ;) Congrats to the winners!

I wasn't sure that I was going to be chiming in on this thread or not. But since Mike has opened this up to his customers for feedback and ideas, I suppose I should lend my perspective to the mix.

Though I consider myself a fairly new customer, I would deem myself a regular of CK. I do not buy up large quantities, nor do I buy from every GEC release or even in every cover option/configuration. I do, however, enjoy the peace of mind that Mike's Early Reserve program provides. I am not plugged into Instagram and I am barely on Facebook so I like the notification system that is set in place. It is because of these systems that I primarily buy from Mike's site, though I have purchased from other dealers as well due to lack of availability.

Because I am not a large volume buyer, I likely register as barely a blip on a dealer's radar but I certainly do appreciate Mike taking the time and effort to reach out to us all for feedback and ideas. Because I care very little for the "lolly-scramble"/"shark feed"/"feeding frenzy" that usually occurs with high demand releases, I have allowed myself to be content with not participating. (I say that with the caveat that I have not been around long enough to experience very many high demand releases, not including Northwoods) I can't devote that much attention to making sure I am there and available at the right time and place so the Early Reserve system is immensely useful and quite valuable to me.

That all being said, I understand the challenges that Mike faces. Balancing the desires and opinions of his customer base with what is sensible for his small business is quite the hefty challenge indeed. I do not envy him one bit. I do empathize with him though and I truly do appreciate his efforts to reach out and discover a solution that works well for his customers and business alike. A lottery is supposed to be strictly based on chance and though it is rough knowing that there is no guarantee of being able to land one, there really was no guarantee of that to begin with considering the madness that usually surrounds these knives anyway.

A lottery happens to work well for me. All I can do is drop my name in the hat and hope for the best. But I do so knowing that that I am not going to have a heart attack or stroke trying to make sure I can get in on a reserve when a thousand other folks are trying to do the same.

Thanks, Mike. I entered into the drawing you set up and it appears to have worked out rather well, especially for the winners! Congrats!

That seemed ok , wonder how it works for multiple choices? Separate lottery for each handle?

Thank you Ajack60 Ajack60 . I didn't see that on the text I received. 683 in an hour, just for fun. That is quite a demand. No wonder the knife nuts of the world can crash someones server.

Well the test was a success. Thanks to all that tried to enter more than once (just for testing purposes, I'm sure). Since it was for a good cause, we won't impose the permanent ban at this point.... :D

One more question. Instead of "Nickname" and "Email Address" would it be alright to just use email address if the results were skewed like "m*k*@*o*l*c*o*k*i*e*.com" ??

should be ok unless two people have similar email addresses that couldn't be differentiated by the skewing? The chances of that happening are pretty slim though I would think.

Sorry, clarification, only the display will be skewed - the data will be intact. Just keeps others from easily guessing who submitted entries.

so is it ok for us to watch the ERS respective page like a hawk or are you going to yell at us for that too? ;):p:D

Funny man. You can watch it like a hawk - but the notice won't come there. It will come like it always has. Since you have an hour, no real hurry.

So if you enter, win , you can enter for another handle? Or win and your out for this particular sfo?

Each variation stands on it's own, there are no implied rules regarding entering for the others. There are those that will win full sets hopefully.

We already obsess over knives, now we're gambling too?

I'm so excited for this I genuinely want to win! Here's to me getting my first #77!

Sorry for the third degree, but:
Will results be given between drawings? What I mean is, I can only afford one. I'd enter the drawing, and if I don't get it, I'd enter for my second choice variation, etc. Or will all four variations be posted at the same time, and if I win a chance to buy more than one knife, can I select which one I want without a penalty?

Yes, I want the submissions to be 4-5 pm central for international timing reasons. Thus they will be on separate days and notifications will go out as soon as the drawing is complete.

^And what about drop outs, there should be back up winners incase ;)

Yes, there will be about a 20% standby list on top of the reserved list.

Much of this is discussed on my "WHEN A KNIFE DRAW BECOMES A NECESSITY" blog entry.
