Case in point today: Taylor Brands (under the name) Smith & Wesson jacked a popular design by french maker Jean Pierre Beal called "calibre 12"

More to be seen on the website.

And here's the version Taylor Brands/S&W is manufacturing in China and selling with NO credit or recognition whatsoever (finantial or other) to Jean-Pierre's work.

Unfortunately Jean-Pierre had patented the design in France and Europe but not the rest of the world for financial reason but S&W took care of that by just grabing the design and patenting it wordwide and guess what?!

It's called 12 Gauge!!!

Don't think anything can be done about it but me and more than a couple dudes in France need this to be out in the open to share the frustration!

It's an act of people lacking in respect and class!:thumbdn:

That said, this thread belongs in this forum, not in General Discussion.;)

No worries.:) I'm sure a Moderator will be along and will move it to the right area. A good rule of thumb is (and I've learned this myself through trial and error), if the thread/original post casts a negative light on the actions of an individual or company, post it in the feedback area, which I linked to above.

thank you for the advice.
I'm sorry this casts a negative light, i'd prefer to say only positive things. But....
ok, so please dear Moderator, could you give me some help on this ?

I doubt many people here would even buy a Smith and Wesson knife in the first place.

O
I doubt many people here would even buy a Smith and Wesson knife in the first place.

especially not when it looks like that :barf:

I don't think that is the point of the thread.

Maybe someone should contact S&W and let them know their name is on a blatant copy and that you are pissed off and going to boycott their company if they don't do something. Maybe S&W will do the right thing and cause Taylor cutlery a big headache. I will write both companies and give them my 2 cents. Maybe if enough people did that they would stop.

Maybe someone should contact S&W

The British former owners of Smith & Wesson sold the right to use the trademark on knives to Taylor outright before they sold the company. So the current owners of S&W have no control over what Taylor does.

while technically legal, is still immoral and dishonorable.

I wouldn't say it's even technically legal; in fact I think it is not. The designer probably doesn't have the resources to take it to court, but that doesn't make it legal, not even technically.

Over 20 years ago United made gun knife very much the same as this. The China companies copy many knives the US companies may not know of patterns in France. No patent would good in US because United was 20+years ago.We should only USA knives.

Gunstock knives have been around for a long time, but there's considerably more similarity between those two than between any other two gunstock knives I've seen.

The fact is, if you take the blade of the "12 gauge" and mount it on the handle of the "Calibre 12", the system works precisely, I have seen it. (handle of the 12 gauge and blade of the calibre 12 match too)

Even the name is a literal translation. No one can say it is a coincidence.

It is a disgrace for a maker using the venerable S&W name to do something like that.
Perceval, I hope they do not copy one of your great designs.

I was @ our big local flea market today and saw a few knife stands. Asked if they had any name brand stuff (Spyderco, BM, kershaw, etc.) of course they didn't. Guy showed me a Vic SAK that said all over the box how it was the real deal, but it sure looked crappy.

Of all the knives he did have, probably 90% were ripoffs of something, Emerson, Spyderco, BM, Kershaw. They were all priced between 10-15$ :thumbdn:
