Another idea I had. You should be able to find a threaded plug at a hardware store and weld a block onto it, then mill out a recess for the compass and epoxy/press it in.

That was my first plan, but the ferrous metal makes the compase act screwy.

Try stainless? Although you're going to have issues with the plug potentially seizing if someone were to tighten it too much. And Anti-seize would be messy.

Do you have a gasket planned out? I would guess that a simple rubber o-ring would work well.

I believe I have just rectified the situation.......I just returned from the hardware store with a brass plug with matching threads, I think I can turn it down then add some stock by the threading/soldering. Then yes, take out the top thread and add a simple o-ring for a water tight seal. I got this! Thanks for your help C P! Will update the thread soon to see how it comes out.

My lathe will cut threads yes, but I don't have the cutter to do it. Don't really want to spend the $$$ and the shipping on a knife I'm giving away. (Sorry Hunter Sharp ;) )

Hey I don't blame you. My wife treats me the same way :D

O.k. so I think I got the end cap bedded down, not finished but on the home stretch. The answer rests with a brass plumbing fitting mated with bushing bronze that I turned. Gonna use the bigger compass and recess it in the cap. Gonna make it smaller, but you guys get the idea. I think its gonna work pretty well. The non ferrous metal doesn't effect the function of the compass. The o-ring makes it water tight. Now I just gotta make it look cool. I have started multitasking. I managed to do most of this while on the phone with a very good customer tonight ;). Glad I still got all of my digits and OSHA dosent give a sh!t about me !

Progress looks good TM! After its all done maybe you could take the handle cap off and polish it up real good before its coated? Just a thought, might look good or might look bad.

I'd imagine producing these on a large(er) scale would be relatively difficult (and probably very costly, both in labor and inputs), especially without sacrificing some degree of quality. That being said, I'm just speculating, Tabitha would have to weigh in on that one, I'm by no means an authority.

All that aside, I'll take 2 :D

I'm thinking maybe a smaller handle with a similar sized blade. Just enough space inside for a fire kit or fishing kit, maybe a sharpener. And of course a compass in the stock!
