Huntin with your Traditional Knives

A truly fun thread. I only have pics from last year. My third son was born 1.5 weeks ago so not much hunting happening. Iowa shot gun season starts the first week in December I will be there.

Keep these pics coming.

Feel free to post old pics as well Brandon! Either way, it's interesting to see what we all carry and use. (Plus hunters love to see pics and tell stories)

Camber-won't be seeing that side of the family (wife's) 'til around thanksgiving, but I will for sure ask what they like. They're farmers mostly, so probably just what ever works best. They know I'm a knife knut, but they think I'm mostly just nutty (not far from the mark ;) ). As far as pretty country...well it's Nebraska so...it depends on what you like. Their area is more hilly than flat, as we are on the eastern side of the state. It probably depends on how much you like cornfields and such. Kidding (mostly). It's a nicely wooded area, with lotsa small ponds and wetlands, so they guide for deer, geese, ducks, and pheasants. Probably more, but I'm not sure. They aren't in the Sandhills, which are hard to explain-kinda badlands, kinda sandy(hence the name, duh Neal), kinda rocky. It's real pretty, if you like that kind of terrain.
Thanks, Neal
Ps-at least it's not Iowa. HA!

Welllll....this morning I got it done in Northern California. I hunted my butt off this year and hadn't seen anything. With one day of hunting left and a good storm hitting the foothills and the sierras, I went out this morning on my friends ranch. I was able to harvest this beautiful black tail buck this morning. His right side is like a whitetail buck! And in my pocket was my new trusty GEC #77 clip point...I used my Outdoor edge knife with the replaceable blades. They are no joke for skinning.

Congrats tmd! Just like on tv, it's always the last day of the hunt lol.

Chris, I haven't shot a longbow or a recurve in a long time, I'll have to get another one some day. Do you ever shoot wood shafts, or always carbon? Love the stag on that Bose by the way.

Jake, I prefer carbon for the consistency it provides. Not to mention how tough they are. All the arrows and broadheads in my quiver have taken deer and are still in use.

About 8 years ago I ordered a dozen cedar shafts and worked through getting them ready. Only 4 were usable due to inconsistencies in weight, grain and straightness. I would love to be able shoot wood but it's just too much time and expense for me right now.

Thanks for the compliments on the Stag Bose. I am sitting on a ridge covered in white oak acorns hoping I can put it to use this evening.

Chris

TMD87- beautiful black tail! I like Outdoor edge knives as well. The swingblade is my favorite for gutting.

Neal70- Iowa's heaven just as Kevin Costner stated. However it is pretty great. I do want to hunt ducks on the Platte River in your state some day. Everything I've read makes it sound great in January.

Jake- I'llvpost pics later as I can't get photobucket to cooperate on my phone. I agree I love looking at old pics as well.

HI Folks.
Great thread.
Some awesome pictures here.
Here is a picture from today.
Went out to one of my favorite squirrel woods and my GEC #23 went along.
It and the little Browning 22 make short work of the fox squirrels.

Ended up seeing 4 deer but couldn't make it happen. I was looking forward to getting the Zulu into use.

TMD, I know you are enjoying the meal and the 77 looks right at home with the bounty.

Nice haul of Fox squirrels! I am sure the .22 and the #23 performed just right.

Chris

Congratulations to TMD and to Burnt Stag on their kills - good hunting gents!

Cambertree and Chris M., I have one knife that has the full piece of stag as the handle, this Randall #26. Not sure if the handle is Sambar or another type of antler. I've skinned and cleaned one deer with it, but didn't get pictures that day (must have been by myself) - the steel was what you would expect from a high dollar knife - retained the edge throughout the entire cleaning process. However, I think Chris's knives have nicer looking stag handles. OH

Nice one, Neal. Thanks for the descriptions of Nebraska and I'll look forward to hearing some more about the working and hunting knives in your area.

Congrats on that nice Blacktail tmd! Interesting head on that, looks like it may have snapped off some points fighting earlier in the season.

Always enjoy your photos, Chris, your hunting outfit is all class, mate.

Nice haul and gear there Burnt Stag.

OH, that's a sweet Randall, thanks for posting. Is it one of the stainless or carbon steel ones? O1 is one of my alltime favourite steels.

I'm down doing the surf coast hike along the Great Ocean Road this long weekend, but no hunting so I'll post a couple of pics in other threads.

Chris , OH , and Cambertree.
Thank you for the nice comments.
Here is a picture of the 23 filling it's end of the bill.wbVP4IS.jpg

Been too hot here (in the 80's) for me to hunt, so I've been shooting at the clays and rifle ranges and fishing. But that should change next week - looking forward to some deer hunting. Cambertree, that Randall knife was new in that picture, but it is carbon steel of some type (it isn't struck with the steel type) but it got a bit of patina from the blood of the last deer I cleaned with it (even though I cleaned it quickly and wiped it with oil). Here is a Case Hammerhead knife I almost forgot about, traded a Buck Trapper pocketknife for it with a member here at Blade Forum a year or so ago just to compare it to my Buck 110. It makes a good hunting knife as well; took these pictures last November. OH

I went out this evening. It was too hot for my tastes, but I wanted to put some meat in the freezer. At the last possible minute a seven point buck came through. Short shot, short blood trail and then the rush to get the meat taken care of. Due to the lack of good light and and hot conditions I didn't take good pictures.

I was also blessed to have a spectacular sunset while tracking.

I will try to get better pictures next time.

CONGRATS! like my grandfather says, "horns make hard soup."

I agree with that. I judge them by the quality and quantity of venison.
My goal was a legal adult deer. Can't wait to eat some fried up with mashed potatoes and gravy.
