Hunting and Trapping

Visitor to my stand Saturday.

pretty awesome. not that it compares, but i had a sqirrell come jumping tree-to-tree saturday morning. he kept coming right at me. he stopped at a tree just 3-4 feet in front of me (literally) , head-level. i wasn't moving. he was looking at me for what seemed like a while, and then crouched down a bit to jump. and, i went "oh, no sir!" and had to scare him off. i didn't make the smooching noise like you did (i like that one)...i just had to move just a bit and kinda clucked at him. crisis averted. :D

I live near the outskirts of town and see deer occasionally near my home. This morning there were 2 young bucks standing in one of my neighbors yards.

Had a nice Buck in our yard this morning when I took the dogs out. He just stared at me, then walked away.

While it's not the excitement of calling in a long-beard in full strut during the spring, nor is it the thrill of out witting a heavy antlered fall monarch, but I still like fall turkey season.

Organic, free-range turkey breast brought to you in part by these fine partners: God, Remington shotguns, Winchester Ammunition, JK Handmade Knives, KYenglish, and me.

Some nice country I hunted yesterday.

Very nice:thumbup: I enjoy fall turkey season or should say I used to. With the new regulations here I only have two weeks in the fall except for archery. I got into a gang of young ones yesterday but none came within range.

In KY we've only got one week in October and a week in December for Fall shotgun turkey season. Archery runs from the 1st weekend in September to the 3rd weekend of January, same as deer season.

This hen was one of a flock of 10 that I've seen regularly all fall. I cut tail feathers off of one of them Thursday morning while bow hunting. Went back to the same area this morning and cut a few more feathers.

Hope you had a good day. I couldn't get across the river to get to the place I wanted to hunt so I drove to another. There were several vehicles there by the time arrived so I decided to scout for a new location. I did not pick a good one, got caught up in a laurel thicket trying to circle back to my truck that made me feel like I was in a jungle. At least I know where to not go again. On the bright side I got a good hike and saw a grouse which was the first I had seen in over a year.

Congrats YoungCurmudgeon, good to see some sucessful hunting.

I filled one of my fall turkey tags last week, got a hen that was tasty!

Today is Opening Day of modern firearm deer season here in Kentucky. In one of the greatest examples of "Failing to plan is planning to fail" in my life, our daughter was born on November 12th (in my meager defense she was 2.5 weeks early). Meaning her birthday party will always be on "Opening Day", so for the foreseeable future I won't be hunting on that day. My wife, being the good woman that she is, suggested that I hunt last evening as a small concession. It's the last afternoon before the "shooting" starts, bucks have been reported to be cruising for does, weather is beautiful and I've been told I should hunt, can't get any better.

So, I decided to guarentee that I not only wouldn't see a buck, but I wouldn't see any wildlife at all...by taking my 4.5 year old son "hunting" for the 1st time.

It was a great afternoon!

I bet you had a better time than if you would have got a deer, by spending time with your son.

That is awesome, YC! Your son will always remember stuff like that. My dad wasn't into hunting when I was growing up, so I haven't experienced that with him. But going fishing with him when I was little is something I will always remember fondly.

On the hunting front, I was eating breakfast this morning and looked out the window to see a decent buck walking the bank of the pond. a few moments later, I saw a different buck chasing a doe around the field. Firearm season starts next friday and to say I am excited is an extreme understatement. This may be my last year I hunt out here, so I plan to make the most of it.

A couple hours after I watched the deer running around, I noticed a coyote hunting in the field behind the pond. Went inside and got my rifle and dropped her in her tracks. That makes 5 coyotes killed in the 11 months since I bought that gun(6 if you count the one I killed during deer season). Also by far my longest shot. The terrain makes it difficult to step off, but my guess is about 170 yards.

Well, my wife (Cindy) and I leave in the AM for Gallatin County, IL, in the Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois. I have deer and turkey hunted in that area on and off for about 30 years and enjoy it a lot. Big deep long hollows and ravines with long oak covered ridges. I am primarily a still hunter and this is an ideal place for that style of hunting. Meeting my brother and his daughter on the road so expect to have a wonderful 4 days. Will post some pics when I return! Hoping to put my JK Improved Bowie thru a good work out.
