Hunting Thread

Preparing for the start of the second firearms season tomorrow here in Illinois. With a windchill of zero at 0600 I will be spending the day in the Chuckwagon.

Nice!
Smart way to build a blind as well.
I love the Savage Accu-triggers.
Good luck.
Tho I've seen your past deer hunts and you seem to have it figured out already. 😉

You have snow there now don't you?
I love sitting in a blind in a blizzard!

Regular firearm season is over here in Michigan.

But muzzleloader season opens up Friday and I still have a few tags to fill.

I used the Vanguard LE micarta handle s35vn on the 2 deer I had to cut earlier.

Trying to decide what knife I wanna play with next.

GPyro GPyro We've got a good blanket of snow on the ground, makes the day that much better. The Savage 220/Accu-Trigger is a tack driving son of a gun. Love it.

During the first season I helped my nephew field dress his first deer with my Onset. Memories are a big part of why I'll never give up the hunt.

Gary, I hope Good Fortune finds you and yours on your hunt. Maybe take a 192/S30V/waterbuffalo/leatherspacers with you?

Thanks.
I was looking at my knife case trying to decide....
.....I forgot all about that!
The wife confiscated it as my Christmas present. The mailman delivered it when I was hunting in the UP. Lol.

Otherwise, absolutely!
Where's yours? I don't see it in the picture. 😁
😉

I like the 119 a lot as a deer knife. I've used everything from an Alpha Dorado (2.5" blade) to a Frontiersman. I like them all, the 124 is especially good when splitting the pelvis or chest.

Mine is in the safe. I blame having too many choices for not using it in the field yet.

Splitting the chest is what I like most about the Vanguard.
The blade is robust enough to give you confidence and the handle is big enough so you've got something to hold onto.

I had to sharpen the blade on a friends 420hc Vanguard a few years back. He had rolled the edge a bit, trying to split the pelvis.
I've been carrying a Tops Brush Wolf for that. I love the way they make a carbon steel blade. It plows right thru it.. And I can clear brush if needed.

I've tried that Butt-out tool.... I don't know. I was taught 40 years ago to just split it. Hunting does are sure a lot easier there.

I usually have a few knives in the backpack, so it's cool to have options.
I used to use a 113 but I've grown to prefer a bigger handle.

Never used a butt-out. I just don't see the need. Splitting is easy enough with the right tool. Started with a 110 (dadgum), then a 106 (bit messy). For the last several years I've used a short t-handled bone saw, seems to do the trick the best.

I hope to see some pictures of that beautiful Vanguard on Christmas Day. BTW, is it wrong I find it funny you've not been able to get your hands on it quite yet?:D

Why not?
I find it funny!
That knife has eluded me since March of '23.

I've been thinking of grabbing a bone saw. A friend gave me a little one. After trying to use it I understand why he gave it away.
.....Now that I think about it, he did have a bit of a smile when he asked me if I had used it.

That's ok.
He's got some nice trees up there and he said he wanted to cut one down so he could take it home for Christmas. I made sure to cut it down for him and stuffed it in his deer blind. You know, so the critters wouldn't get it.
👍
