I am going to say this even though it might cause a fire storm

This might sound a bit pompous but after reading many of these threads over the years I have noticed that many of them are started by folks that would rather have 5 $20 knives instead of 1 $100 knife. Many times after reading some of their other posts they might not be in a financial position to own a nice Spyderco either. This goes for the Sebenza haters, Strider haters and on & on..
Many are blessed to have the means to own some darn fine knives and there will always be a bit of envy. Not saying this is true of this thread but it exists.

This thread kinda bummed me out, and I started thinking there may be some lovely little Spydies out there who will be shunned and never adopted to a good home. So I went out today and bought yet another delicious Spyderco! Behold: my first fully-serrated Spydie! I dig it...:cool::thumbup:

The Endura 4 SE... "living ancestor to the mighty chainsaw."

Ugh. Just makes me want a serrated spyderhawk even more.

I don't like all of them, but I certainly like some of them. Even more, I appreciate the business mentality that produces ALL of them.

You and the other guy who started the same thread need to go do your homework. It's been said here already, feel the same way about Benchmade you do about Spyderco and I have really good reasons that many here would agree with and I've done my homework. Before you go hating on the way the knives look in pics, seriously, go handle one for ten minutes, then cut something. I've owned knives from all the major brands and none of them stack up to Spyderco when it comes to what really counts: materials, edge geometry, ergonomics, and the right steel with the right heat treat. There's probably a thread about it, or you can PM me or email me, and I can tell you everything Spyderco does right and everything Benchmade does wrong just as an example. Don't really care if you like Benchmade either.

Blanket statements are seldom true, whether about Spyderco or Benchmade. There may be some things you don't care for but that doesn't make something bad. There is nothing wrong with Spyderco just like there is nothing wrong with Benchmade. I have plenty of both brands and they both make great knives.

You're in a sports bar, the walls of which are lined with signed photos of every Yankee player from Joe DiMaggio to the present day, and you're wearing a t-shirt with YANKEES SUCK! on the front and back. Doesn't matter whether you walked in the door, or were beamed down by aliens with a warped sense of humor after your anal probe, you're going to catch some flack.

I truly feel sorry for anyone who doesn't allow their hands to make the decision on weather or not to like Spyderco knives, as apposed to the eyeballs. Who cares what your eyes think? They're not the ones holding the knife. It's the same way I feel sorry for people who won't try a food just because they think it looks weird. I'd just feel like I was missing out.

The reason Spyderco's come up on the exchange so much, I think, is because a lot of people buy their knives.

Traditional knives can feel good in the hand but you always know you're holding a knife and after long periods of use, they can become less and less comfortable. Spyderco's, on the other hand(pardon the pun), are designed around the hand and can be much more comfortable.

I think Spyderco is the "Porsche" of knives, which is to say, no other knife company exemplifies the idea of "form follows function" more than they do.

Let your hand make the decision and time will prove to you that they deserve their reputation for quality as well.

Spyderco makes good knives.
Benchmade makes good knives.
Both make some which are ugly, and some which look cool.
Why does this have to be a binary type thing for some people?

There's a reason there are so many knife companies & so many different models. While I can understand if you don't like certain Spydercos (Or other brands for that matter), I don't understand the blanket comment. There's just so many different models, shapes, & sizes, that I find it hard to believe that NO Spyderco fits your hand. Now, if you were to say you just prefer thumb-studs, don't like thumb-holes, etc, than I can understand that.

Good luck in finding THE knife company that'll fulfill all of your needs/wants.

I can agree with the "Porsche of knives" good analogy!

I'm just fed up with too many people thinking Benchmade is perfection and Spyderco is shit. It's just not right. I've never had a Benchmade that cuts, carrys, or fits in my hand nearly as well as the comparable Spyderco. Their Gold Class knives are just polished versions of the Blue class and not nearly worth the MSRP. I'd guess about 75% of the Benchmades I've ever got were dull with blunted tips. I've NEVER had that happen with Spyderco. I'll never buy another Benchmade. But hey that's just me.

Some have stated that this type of discussion is useless, but this very thread (I'm a newb to knives and collecting) inspired me to run out tonight to Cabelas on my way home from work to hold one for the first time... I was VERY impressed when I handled one and I'm now shopping avidly for a good deal on one. So to those who say these kinds of threads are crap, I disagree. The rally to Spyderco's defense caused me to try them out.

Just my two cents :)

So basically, had the thread been hatin' on Benchmade, you wouldn't have had a problem with it, but since it was hatin' on Spyderco, it's not cool? Man, if that's not typical fanboyism.

It's a good idea to read, comprehend, and then post... Not defending the guy's thread at all, but he clearly stated he didn't like the way they felt in his hands.

I really do not like Spyderco knives. I don't like the way they feel in my hand. (although I have been told my hands are more like bear paws). The design is unattractive and in wielding them I believe they are highly overrated. Maybe that is.why I see so many for sale on this site. I cannot,be,the only one with this opinion. Thoughts or counterpoints?

The OP said that but another poster said that they all looked ugly and that he had never held one but didn't like them. I'm pretty sure that is who the comment was directed towards plus all the talk about Spyderco knives being ugly. I could say something similar to what you did but that would just be rude.

It was a blanket reply to anyone who had judged something negatively before fully experiencing it and basing that judgment off of something irrelevant. That's not to say that looks don't play a roll in people's tastes towards the things they prefer because clearly they do. I didn't think Spyderco's were very attractive looking until I held them and used them and now I own many and think they're some of the most beautiful and functional things on the planet. This goes back to the subject of 'form follows function' and that, to me, is true beauty.

I did read the OP and I have great reading comprehension skills, but thanks for the tip.

Next time I'll be more specific about who I'm directing my thoughts towards.
