I'm not 100% sure which one you mean, but thanks much for the kind words :) "Lovely" and "clever" are not exactly the most common terms that come up in a search for my work... :o

I keep meaning to do some research into learning basic archery skills, too. Where should a 6'3" 225# goof who's RH dominant/LE dominant, with a budget of about $300 start?

An eye doctor?

Just kidding, head to your local archery shop and bring in a knife if yours that you would be willing to barter for some time spent on setting you up right.

JT...any archery shop can measure you up for a bow, they'll have several you can mess around with and get a feel that you like. They should have a range to shoot and may even have used ones for sale. Just be honest with them that your new to archery and you want to get measured so you know what to look for. Theyll take care of you knowing that even if you dont get something that day, they have a future customer. Then you can check the bay or the list for a reasonable setup.
Make sure you get the ranges for weight and draw length before you buy. Then go back to those guys and get restrung and set your draw length and weight, maybe pick up some arrows cut to your length, field tips, and (if you hunt) broad heads. I suggest no more than 60#s. My single cam PSE is 60-70 lbs. Crank the limb bolts all in and back out 4 full turns and its at 60. If it comes with arrows but they're too long for you, they can be cut...too short and they're good for warm up maybe.

Is this thing on?
Somebody call bigghoss. Snark is broken.

That's an option... sort of. Out to roughly 75 yards, I can see about minute-of-blurry-paper-plate with my right eye, and that's sort of workable. Obviously I would not be comfortable blasting anything at a game animal at that range without optics, I'm just saying I know my limits in that regard. Regardless, I'm WAY more comfortable with the fact that I can see minute-of-pretty-sure-that's-a-beer-can at 75 yards with my left eye.... *shrug*

glasses? contacts?

also, with recurve esp, you can get optics built in to correct for issues.

bass pro local to me seems excellent at fitting gear.

Well, pretty much no one (responsible) shoots that distance with a bow - except at the Olympics. Most target shooting takes place at 20 yards, out to about 50 for 3D shoots. Anyway, you shouldn't have any trouble finding a bow in your price range, righty or lefty, as long as you don't need (want, no one needs) the latest and greatest.

locally, the comps shoot to 60 yds.

even with long bow, but the target is 10 feet wide apparently :D

my local expert guy an group 4-5 inches at 60 yds. i can do about a foot on a good day.

his bow is $4000, mine is under $400 ;)

he can also shoot my bow with 5-6 inch groups ;) ;) ;)

This is why I said (*and I quote myself) "pretty much"....there are always instances of individuals on the outer ends of the bell curve. My point being, it's not ABSOLUTELY necessary to shoot with your dominant eye if your other one is good enough - especially if you don't plan on competing or trying to hit gerbils at 50 yards. I bet JT would have a $#!+ton of fun shooting righty even if he IS left eye dominant. Might be he has even MORE fun NOT trying to force himself to overcome his right-handedness. There's no way from an optometric standpoint that I should shoot righty. But that's the way I learned (had to teach myself in the 70's) and I still enjoy it, even though I HAVE TO close my left eye. Shot quite a few 295 - 298 (out of 300) scores, too, in 5-Spots and Vegas leagues. I have fun, bottom line. So, JT - by all means shoot lefty if you find you can and you can find a bow that suits. But if you're more comfortable shooting righty and can handle some of the cons that go with that, well.....the decision is yours. I'm merely suggesting that there is more than one way to go about it.

yeah yeah :D

i'm also left eye dominant and a mostly natural righty...

but i've trained both ways

and try to train with eyes open too...

Left-hand left-eye for me, but I don't own a bow or a gun, so knowing that is rather useless at the moment.

I've been considering a Samick takedown recurve for my SHTF emergency kit, but I got caught up on knives first and so I haven't really felt it justified to spend money on a bow I'd use less than a knife.

I was trained to shoot with both eyes open and always give the same advice.

a PSE long bow is a good bet for a lot of reasons

a recurve is not bad... instinctive. satisfying.

anything from a basic compound to a moderate all around hunting bow to a sophisticated target comp bow... you'll find that with good setup and practice, is possibly stupidly accurate. in some cases, better than most people with a rifle ;) it's almost cheating.

next year, or two, i might step up on the compound bow front.

i'd like a sweet non-compound/cammed crossbow for lols - i can't hunt with one, but still fun.

for a certain amount of "lord of the rings" or "game of thrones" ... a mongolian bow. seven rivers is mine.

Well...my next few nights are ruined...season 5 of the walking dead on Netflix...

Good day today. Finished up the apple butter (32 gallons today, 148 total!) Then used the leftover fire to roast marshmallows and hotdogs (which, when put onto a bun, taste very good together.) Got to throw tomahawks a bit in between too. Gonna go see The Martian tomorrow.

Me legs and arms are sore though.

Go trad and shoot instinctively. I have a 35# pse that the misses shoots now and I have a 73# custom Fred Bear. I lucked out and was gifted the bow from my uncle who doesn't shoot anymore.
I was happy as a pig in slop over that one!

i found i mostly did not care... painful to watch.

Yeah...if I had to watch commercials and wait a week between episodes I could see that...
That's why I stopped watching it on TV because every other week was about a separate group so you have to wait 2-3 weeks to see what happens with Carl and Rick.
Then the whole Carol with those stupid kids was just an entire waste of everything...

Much better this way

Scored a mini fridge today... 30 bucks. It's old but it gets ice cold. Small. But can hold 24 beer bottles. Just barely. Or 22 beers and 1 Pepsi 2 liter.

Happy to be able to keep cold beer in my shop!
