I can't contain my 0777 lust any longer. (Clones)

Dude, it's not that you can't comment on saving for something, but until you can add factors like mortgages, car loans, tuition, college loan payments and the like; you just don't get it.

Why is it that different? I usually put 50% into savings, sometimes less, sometimes more. I understand not being able to buy something--trust me! There have been hundreds of knives that I wanted buy but couldn't afford. Other expenses just slow saving; they don't change how it works. You still just put aside whatever $$ you can, and save it until you have enough for the object of desire.

No, just curious actually. It's impressive that a 13 year old a collection like that.

Ok, then. I have had a SAK since I was 6. I started collecting "cheapo"/gas station special knives when I was around 9 or 10, and I got into high quality knives around May of 2013.

Prior saving has played a major role in my knife collecting--when the perfect unique Seb popped up, I had saved enough to be able to jump on it. Most of the knives in my collection came during November/December/January, as that is when most people go on vacation. Thus, I can make the most $$ during that season. (Around a grand in December alone.)

OP, sorry for the hijack.

Well man, you certainly have good taste.

A grand huh? Paying taxes on that income?? Carrying insurance for the pet sitting business?

I don't agree with the op, but I do see were he was coming from. And this thread did its job right? He decided not to get the clone. I think he should be applauded for making the right decision, not vilified for considering something else.

No, but I do pay sales tax, as does everyone. One of the benefits of being young--no IRS! But that is completely unrelated to saving.

What everyone seems to be missing is:

I doesn't matter how long it takes you to save!! The point is, $5 a month or 5k a month, you can put aside whatever you can to slowly creep toward your goal.

He decided not to? Did I miss that?

when your 30 or 40 and if you remember that post you will know how ridiculous that is coming from a 13 year old kid, and a kid that by the sound of his knife collection doesnt go without.

I don't understand how $800 (or whatever the going rate is) for a production knife is worth it when an array of customs are in that same range, some would say better in every way than the 0777. Can someone help me understand this? If the person just loves the knife and it speaks to them, I get it, but is there any logical reasoning behind it?

Oh well I don't think I would pay $800. I paid less than $400 for mine. If you can find one close to the original price I think it's worth it. $400 - 500 is pretty much the max I will pay for a pocket knife.

If you say so. I have been on the hunt for a Spyderco/Kershaw SpyKer for some months. I found one for sale on Ebay. I bid up until I would have spent all my spare cash, and stopped when the high bid went above what I could pay. I lost by $20.

I have numerous other example is you want them. I saw two CRK Zaans in the Exchange for $350 each, but I did not have the money to buy one, and so I watched as someone else did.

Yesterday, I saw an OD-1 (which I have been after since last summer) for sale in the Exchange. I did not buy it, because I have to save for a Spyderco WTC.

Let's take this to email and PM if you have any further questions/comments/insults.

ZT makes safe queen collector knives. So the answer is forget about the fugly ZT and buy a worthwhile custom or simply buy a knife to use instead of wasting tons of money for a paper weight.

I am inclined to agree with you. These knives such as the 0777, at least in my opinion, offer no more performance (and in fact most of the time less performance) than a Spyderco in a good steel. On the reverse, the reasons why people (at least me) would buy a custom (the hand touches, uniqueness, unparalleled quality, materials) are also not present to the same extent.

So, they seem to fill a void in the market that has no need to be filled. At least in my opinion.

Really? I know quite a few people that use and carry ZT knives (including the limited editions). I'm one of them so I find your comments just plain ignorant and silly. I have a 0777 (M390) in my pocket as I'm typing this. Your post is also bordering on trolling so think a bit next time.

I just want to clarify what I meant. I was referring to the limited edition knives such as the 0777 that go for ridiculous prices.

I also carry ZT knives and have used them in some pretty bad areas, for cutting and prying. No chipped blades, no broken locks, no zOMG the knife didn't hold an edge after cutting through drywall for 10 hours. People should verify that their perceptions are properly aligned to the reality most of us live in. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

Wait, what exactly does the secondary market price on anything have to do with the quality of the actual item? It's like we are comparing apples and pizza here. What speculators charge for an item has absolutely NOTHING to do with what the knife originally sold for, the materials it is made from, the handle materials, the lock type, or anything else. Spyderco has gone through the same thing. When the Paramilitary 2 in S90V came out, they sold for around $180, a month later everyone was selling them for $300-$500, how is that the manufacturers fault?

Again, if someone buys a knife and chooses to leave it as a safe queen, who cares? It's that persons business, not any of ours.

So having a mortgage, car loan, tuition, and the like justifies theft?

I have a mortgage, 2 car loans, a 12 year old in private school, and a 20 year old in college, and choose to do without rather than support thievery.

It's not ZT's fault what the secondary market brings to the prices on these knives. Other than making a limited number, that drives the prices up. All they could do is make them standard line items, or not make them at all. I've got more Spydercos that will bring much more than what I paid for them than ZT's. In fact ZT and Kershaw really hasn't been sought after and higher prices paid, until recently compared to Spyderco. The way I see it, I don't have to have everything made by any knife company and I'm grateful for what I do manage to buy.

There will be no more off topic posts and discussion of other members. This has been said over and over again. Stay on topic or don't post. Failure to do so will result in infractions.

The ridiculous initial prices (not ridiculous for an LE, look at Spyderco's newest PM2 Sprint) or ridiculous secondary market prices? Because as we all know, the secondary market prices are driven up by...well, us.

I think a majority of us feel the same towards clones and fakes - it takes the real legit feeling away from the true nature of the knife you're after. If you can do it with the 0777, why can't you do it with every expensive knife you want to buy? Why not buy cheap clones of every high end blade out there "just to get a feel for them." THAT'S THE FUN PART!! Getting a feel for the limited edition knife!! And you know full well that if you don't like it, you can probably sell it for more than you bought it for!!
