I don´t like Spyderco, help me!

I like folders and I have some really nice ones, but I don´t own A Spyderco. I just don´t like their design. I can´t really put my finger on it but there is someting about Spydercos wide, leafshape blades, that I just can´t cope with.

There's your problem right there. ^

Get one and use it for a while and chances are pretty big that you will learn to love it. They take a little time to get used to, especially the way they look. I can recommend you get a FFG Delica. It is a knife where as many unnecessary components as possible have been removed in order to keep weight to a minimum and give the knife a thin and streamlined profile which makes it a dream to carry in the pocket. Still the knife feels great in the hand and will of course perform excellently at any cutting task. It is a true EDC knife. If you feel like something a bit more heavy duty, there is also the new Paramilitary 2, which is coming up soon, which seems very promising.

Being new around here, I think this thread is great.

The Spyderco "look" hasn't grown on me yet either, but after reading all the comments here, I know I must add a Spyderco to my wish list.

I'm off to research the different models to pick one for the list. :)

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of knife makers, so it's not like you've got everything else and Spyderco is all that you have to choose from. You'll get advice here on a lot of subjects, but what you should like is not one of the subjects you want advice on. When I got here I heard how good this knife was and that knife was, and I bought them. They may all be great knives for someone else, but not one is a keeper for me. Learn from my mistakes, and buy what *you* want and only what *you* want.

How about we get to the OP's problem. He seems to be looking for a sleek, ergonomic Spyderco that is does not have the comprimised pocket feel and look of the many leaf blade designs. There are actually very few Spyderco knives that are not wide when closed. I have tried a great many and you will find a summary of my experiences below.

Anything with a recurve ("S" shaped blade in Spyder-parlance), hawk bill or leaf shaped blade is going to be a non-starter if you are looking for nice narrow pocket carry. That means that your Manix, Caly, Civilian, Superhawk, Spyderhawk..... are all out. If you move into the realm of reasonably trim when closed knives that leaves you with your Enduras, Delicas and a few of the small models. The smallest models often carry well but are still relatively wide when compared to their length. Your most trim models are going to be the Jess Horn variants and the JD Smith Variants (both discontinued IIRC).

I have similar feelings to the OP regarding Spyderco and I have been through at least 2 dozen trying to get it right and find the one that lets me experience the brand like the fan-boys do (you know, love, love, love my Spyderco).... I finally hit with the JD Smith sprint run from a year or so ago. That is one heck of a knife and it kind of strikes me as the analog to the BM 710. Now, it is a back locker, but surely a BM fan can overlook that and appreciate the JD Smith for it's good looks and great performance.

So, OP.... go find yourself a JD Smith, FG, flat ground, sprint run and fondle.... it might be the cure for your Spyder-blues. :D

I agree with you man, I know they're quality knives but I can't get past their butt-ugliness. Aesthetically they're just awful, but that's just to ME (and you!).

I like a lot of companies ie. Kabar, Cold Steel, Benchmade, Blackhawk, ESEE, CRKT, and Emerson to name the few off the top of my head. I love Spyderco knives. I used to not like the designs of the knives now I absoluty love them. My first ever Spyderco was the Tenacious and I just picked up an Endura 4 wave they are both great knives. Try one if you don't like it you can always sell it. :D

Not to offend anybody, but throw all these BM in the trash, and get started with your Spyderco collection!
Seriously now, get whatever you personally prefer.
I've had many BM, now got maybe 4 or 5. And over 50 Spyderco knives.
I find that Spyderco's ergos are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than BM. Almost on EVERY model. Plus all the blades I've had cut way better. Furthermore, I think BM knives are overpriced, they use lower grade steels (154 and D2), and pay more attention to aesthetics than any other aspect of knife making....

Just my 2 cents.

Maybe I'm strange, I like Spydy, Benchmade, Buck, and a few others. I can usually find something in them I like. :D

Spyderco knives aren't sleek or pretty? Meet the Chokwe:

I can see the argument about Spydercos being ugly, I avoided them for years, like so many others.
IMO it all comes down to the intended application. If you're collecting nice looking knives, I can see why you would avoid Spyderco. If you need a tool to put to work though, you're really selling yourself short by not at least trying one. IMO as far as the major knife companies go, they offer ergonomics and function that is rarely matched, let alone beat.

I never liked spyderco until I handled one. They have the best ergonomics out there for folders (in my opinion, and for my needs). Don't judge em until you cut with them, your view might change.

Spyderco's ain't built to please your eyes, they're built to please your hand when you cut stuff. To OP: use what you like. You don't need to like Spyderco because other's do. BM's are top quality knives and made in USA.
If you really want to approach spyderco, go in brick and mortar store that sells them and handle some. Then you know if you want them. Aesthetic's is generally lousy point to make decision, especially if its only one.

Should I seek help or continuing byuing Benchmades???

Continue buying the knives you like. There's nothing wrong with that. You don't need to like something just because many others do. I once bought a Spyderco Tenacious to experience it and altough I think it is a good knife, I don't like it. It is just a matter of personal preferences.

I would get a waved Endura. The closed profile is one of the few Spydies that I find to be proportional in width and length. You also may want to look at the Native. It has a decent closed profile as well.

The holes in the blade simply don't lend to a narrow closed profile which also dissuades me more often than not. I make a few exceptions, for those designs which are most unique, like the P'kal.

I also disliked the way Spyderco's looked and to this day I really don't like thier styling.

However, I own several of thier designs and they are great cutters. I guess a Spyderco is just not something I want to show my friends if you know what I mean.

Correction: I have shown several friends my Gayle Bradley that is awesome.

The first time I thumbed open my Native, that was it. I love it. Then I opened a D'Allara ball-lock. Wow! I just kept opening and closing it. Never had anything that smooth. It was a very cool addicting feeling.

I agree that they are not stylish (for the most part). I think sometimes that blue FRN is Spyderco's idea of fancy. That doesn't matter. They feel amazing in your hand. They open and close like a dream. They come with the best factory edge you can get. And they just plain cut.

Do yourself a favor and get a Tenacious or a Persistence or a Byrd Robin for that matter, something cheap. You will like it and you will buy more. And you'll thank us.

I used to be Benchmade fan as well , never liked Spyderco's ,....
here is what you need to do : buy Military (regular) , carry it for few days, use it !! that should help.
