I just received a small sebbie.... I don't get it.

I own about 75 Spyderco's (including all of the Sage's) and 4 Sebbies, and quite a few others. Spyderco does indeed have great quality (as does KAI for that matter), but to me they are apples and oranges blades. Sebbie's are great users, but for the price point, unless you have an inordinate amount of extra income, just pride in ownership in a perfectly made USA knife is a major draw (for me at least). OR you don't mind using perfection in a blade that cost you $350-$600, then the Sebbie won't let you down. I rotate my carries, and I purchased this (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1000426-Great-deal-on-knife-sheaths-all-sold) so I can carry my Sebbies but avoid pocket wear on the scales and clip (common for the Sebbie), so I can have my cake (beautiful perfect looking Sebbie) and eat it (use the blade) too :).

I do wish that they would upgrade to a better steal (SV90, 110, etc.), but who am I to know what is right for a Sebenza, CRK wins the awards for a reason, I don't even know how to make a knife :).

P.S. their customer service (the spa treatment, warranty, etc.) is a big deal to me as well, definitely worth the $ to support businesses that provide this level of service and quality of product... again this is to me, each of us probably places different levels of value to everything :).

They cost more because Spyderco has China made knives and other goodies to offset the costs like sharpening systems, beads, shirts, lanyards and because of there volume can get materials for less cost..etc etc..where as CRK makes High Quality knives and that's pretty much it. And I'm sure for every 1000 PM2's made there Is one CRK. It is like asking why a Bentley cost more then a Lexus.

Get back too us in a year after carrying it. I found that the lock up settled in, no blade play, handles scratched up a little but looks broken in. Great knife for the long run.

This is what I was gonna say, I've was underwhelmed when I got my large, 2 months ago, now I am not

That may have a little to do with it, but the main reason is tolerance levels, and consistency in quality.

That is actually a great analogy, given every Sebenza scale is hand fitted / machined to the blade, i.e. you can't just swap the business side scale to another Sebbie and expect it to work(which goes to your point, CRK does this so that the tolerances are so exact for every knife). Bentley, Rolls, etc., are just like that, a lot of hand made / fitted parts(I watched a top gear vid with a lady and sewing the leather on the steering wheel for I believe either a Bentley or Astin Martin?), vs. Spydy or Lexus, all parts made via automation and swappable. That hand fitting/machining = time of excellent machinist = more $.

Thanks for the awesome replies everyone. I am definitely not a troll and am genuinely asking the questions. Now that I think about it though, my questions were not exactly fair to CRK. I haven't even had the Sebenza for a full day. They were just my quick opinions. Probably a lot of it being buyers remorse for spending $400 when at quick glance and holding, the PM2 can perform the same.

It will be added to my EDC rotation and I will gladly update those thread with how I feel in a few months.

Appreciate the follow-up bmilleker, you must admit a first post scenario looked suspicious :D at least to me.

Yes, I agree the Bently/Lexus was a great analogy. But I don't think the China thing, t-shirts, beads, etc...has very much to do with it.
The main thig is the consistency in tolerance, and quality.

I really like my PM 2's, but in about ten years you will see just how well of an investmate you made in the CRK.
Both great knives for the given price IMO.
Thanks for posting again!

Not a fair comparison. I am comparing a PM2 to the Sebenza. Not a $20 knife to it.
Agreed, how about comparing a Bulova or even Tag to a Rolex, that is closer :). PM2 is a NICE knife, especially for the price. Ya it is $150, but you definitely get your $'s worth. Or, you can spend more $ than a large Sebbie and get one of the excellent PM2 sprints, like the S90V carbon Fiber (about $400-$450 on the used market?).

Give it a few days to grow on you. You might notice subtle differences that not a lot of knives have, especially all in one package. If you're use to the Para 2 maybe a large Sebenza might fit you better.

a. Your pants pockets will show less wear from the Sebbie than from the more abrasive G-10 scales of the Spyderco.
b. With the thumb stud in place of the opening hole the knife is "narrower" making it easier to get your hand past the knife into your pocket.
c. You will never have to adjust the blade tension screw.
d. You will never, ever have to adjust the blade tension screw.
e. Four screws to completely disassemble instead of six.

There are lots more reasons as others have mentioned. Just carry it for a week and you'll come to see them too.

Thank God...I figured out I don't need a CRK to feel good vibes and joy..

There is just something inherently wrong with that in MY life..

My kids, my wife, my family bring me joy..

My Harley brings me together with my friends and brings me great vibes and joy.. CRK knives are awesome!! But they don't bring me anything but a hole in my wallet.. This brings me no joy ..

What's with this logic stuff man?!:D:thumbup:

I am neither for or against the Sebenza. It was the first higher quality knife I purchased. It was a great knife, felt sturdy, the design was simple and effective, ergos lacked a tiny tiny bit, but at the end of the day it felt like a knife. That is just my opinion. Maybe gonna try a 25 though. I love my strider SnG and PT though, and have for a while. One thing I did take note of however was that my knife taste does change from time to time, excpet for the two as stated earlier. May not have scratched your itch.
