Got checked in to the hotel a bit ago. Marriott Courtyard is pretty nice. I wasn't expecting very much but so far, very nice.

So far the high light of the long drive was lunch. Good food, REALLY good looking waitress and cold beer!

Looks like the kinda place I would have raised some Hell back in my wild and woolly days

As for Mountainmist, DISAPPOINTING - again. Not sure I have anything constructive to add so I'll shut up and hope his father can straighten him out.

So, even though Blade "officially" starts tomorrow, I went and hung out at The Pit with Ethan. And as always that crazy old coot was up to his old tricks... So as a special treat I give you the first pics from Blade...

I don't know if you guys can really handle this...

Ok, fine maybe you can...

Oh... Can't forget the NSFW

Man I am jealous that everyone is going to blade, again I over planned and totally forgot about it until a few days ago...

Hey worldwood,
I got some ats-34, 440c, some 01 tool steel, A2 and now... Drumroll...... 52100 I got plans for that stuff. It will be my first time working with it.

Im jealous as well :(

Awesome stuff on the steel. If your supplier has thick stock around .32-.35" PLEASE PLEASE let me know :D

I cant personally make knives, dont have the tools, but for some strange reason i keep looking at ordering steel.... Yea im smart  LMAO

No but really it just seems easier to get the exact size i want in advance, when it comes to something this size anyway, and then when the time comes to have it made i dont have to hope i can find a maker that has or can get exactly what i want. Then its all about finding someone that will work with something this size and can do the primary angles and edge thickness where i want them. When it comes to wanting something this precise that might be a challenge in itself though.

It uses comic sans like a special person you cheeky guy :p
So when it switches to windings we know to cut you off?

52100 actually doesn't seem THAT hard to work with.

Here are the sizes available, I've only done 2- 1/2" and 1-1/4" and that was with my 1x30 and 1x42 but now I have a 2x72.

I don't think it is either, I'm still trying to find to steel I wanna really work with. 3v is a little out of my price range.

Are you sending it out for heat treat? I hear properly heat treating 52100 can be a little more tricky than some other steels...Of course this is just what i read.... I know from experience PHT does great things with 52100 though.... Other than the HT i doubt you would have issues working with it.

Not at all, in fact it grinds and drills like butter when properly annealed. Forgers don't like it very much though; it needs quite a bit of heat and moves pretty slow under the hammer due to the alloy content. Most guys who forge it a lot use power hammers.

Call Aldo. If he can't help you, your best bet might be to find a smith who will forge down some round stock for you. There's just not much of a market for barstock that thick.

Besides, grinding a blade that thick is madness anyway... you're going to literally be throwing half of it away and that'll add up to big bucks both in the steel itself and labor/belts etc... so as long as you're using a steel that can be forged, it would make a lot more sense to have someone forge it.

You'll notice that other than the relatively small number of cutting comp cats, there aren't a whole lot of guys making blades anywhere near that big by hand stock removal. We generally leave that stuff to the hammer jockeys and companies with CNC machines :D

I think I know what you're getting at with all this but I don't really understand why. There are lots of alloys that will perform either dang near as well, or significantly better in a comp-style knife, and either cost the same or a lot less all things considered.

Looks like Aldo's???

Thats where i got the .265" thick piece thats 3" x 24".. I called and asked for that size... After blade show i may need to just give him another call and see if he has, or can get it thicker.

Ill most likely be going around 2.25-2.5" for my "dream" 2 handed chopper if i can get thicker stock. At this thickness i cant make the blade as wide and keep the angles and edge thickness where i want without making the saber flat area 1 inch plus or so, and that would make it a lot heavier than i want and might not bite as deep because of the huge saber flat areas taking up nearly half the blades width. Thicker steel gives me the option of widening the blade and keeping the angles.

Of course if i do end up finding the stock i want that will leave me with this "big" hunk of steel i got here..... But i guess i could always think up another project.

Yup, I get my steel from aldo,

On a higher note anybody here about this "Slenderman" my wife and I YouTube it and it looks a little freaky but we didn't watch the documentary yet

This is not for a comp style knife at all, way over the maximum perimeters. Id just save up and buy another comp cutter LOL, like you said it would be easier.... Truth is there isnt much on the market like what im wanting, There are things in the general size, but not the same geometry. Dan has made something similar, and it decimates wood like no tomorrow. and he has a lot of influence on my design, but he is just too busy to take on the project. So he is helping me with the design, but it will be up to me to get it done.

As far as forging it... I dont know much about forging and hammering and all that, can forgers get exact primary angles and stuff? Seems like stock removal, while it will waste a lot of steel, might get more precise results.. Again i dont know this to be fact. But i do know it will waste a bit of the steel, but if i get what i want out of the steel anyway they can waste the rest and i wouldnt care LOL

CNC... hell i wouldnt know where to begin honestly........

When it comes to different steels performance in comps, there are several better than 52100 of course... But PRICEY.........

There are bladesmiths who can forge very very close to final finished shape, including pretty precise angles.

Every forging knifemaker I know also owns a grinder. Take a look at some ABS bowies... those cats are plenty familiar with precision. ;)

It's not really about wasting the steel itself. The steel is often the least expensive part of the knife overall. It's whether or not you want to pay someone to stand there for hours and turn a pound of steel into dust, and whether they're willing to even do it. It's not nearly as fun as it looks :D

LMAO!! I bet its not!!!

Dont get me wrong i understand why a lot more people dont make these type things.... Im just hoping i can find one who will :D

I will however check out some forged blades!!! Like i said i dont know much about it, so i definitely wont blow off that idea at all!!

James one day we are going to have to meet up. When we do drinks are on me. I love talking with you bud and have learned quite a bit from our talks here. I often hope you jump in conversations because i know your comments will be helpful.

Thanks, I appreciate that! Hop on down to ATL, I'll be here all weekend :D

Morning everybody or maybe it's just me in here. :D

I'm heading for some coffee. I kinda hate sleeping in hotels or maybe it's just that I miss my wife and my dog being next to me. Either way, I'm up. See y'all at the show!

Morning folks! Coffee has been consumed and I'm wearing a baseball shirt, I'm still confused.

How is that different than every other morning Murph?

I got my coffee and some antibiotics going this morning. Started feeling kinda crappy last night but I'm a little better this morning. There's NO WAY I'm letting myself get sick this weekend.
NOT HAPPENING!

What are y'all looking forward to seeing at Blade Show today? Other than Ethan, Todd and all things Ka-Bar?

Morning folks.

Have fun at blade while rest of us are NOT at blade. Your mission today is to get crotch shots of all the major knife manufacturers. aaaaaaaaaand go.
