i love the enduras throw the kershaws in the trash

next you will tell me doug ritter uses garbage steel and ZT knives go dull in a week right? i mean they are all wrong and the people who complain on the internet are correct right?

Ah yes, the "Internet Effect."

Alien life did come to visit Earth...then they accessed the internet and decided Earth wasn't worth it!:D

judging 3-4 knives from a company and testing them on ropes and paper etc is hardly representative (especially one that makes over 100 different knives) of that company

making broad statements that are fairly derogatory in nature does nothing but create undue bias and hurts said company unduly

what if i said
( i bought a benchmade and it was dull and off center they suck) now what do you think people not as educated as you or I will think? "bad company don't buy from them"

dennis knew exactly what he was doing when he made this thread and what effect they would have on the community.. trying to backtrack and say he doesnt have any new exp with their new knives or that its just his opinion or now he needs to do some testing from 3rd parties is just double talk and damage control for getting caught out there

i bet theres at least one post on EVERY one of the big brands spyderco kershaw sog benchmade emerson etc where the knife was dull off centered etc... guess what? it happens .... not every single knife is hand tested by the friggin owner of the company before ship out... thats what customer service is for send it back get a new one talk to them im sure more than likely it was a fluke and the company will repair/replace it and telling people to throw out their knives based on one sour grapes occurrence is just wrong.. if i was a mod i would have just deleted the thread altogether based on the title and TS first post... theres no need for such talk without proof and even then say it like an adult not a disgruntled child

all this dialoge doe'nt affect my opinion of kershaw or you fellows in the least.the last kershaw in cpm d2 was crap. even the guy i traded it to got rid of it in a week . one thing is very evident from comments the alloy knowledge in this group is very lacking. most steels when elevated by 2 points rockwell increase edge durability by 20%. chew on that & spew your venom as you like. spydies shoot for 60 in s30 . bucks vantage pro checked out in the lab at 59.6. buck outcut my millie in sisal because the millie checked out in 2 labs to a 58. various informed parties suggested that the black coating process applied at a high enough heat caused the softer spydie but no definitive info ever reached me. an interesting cutting between the buck & the leek may show similar results if i can make the blade profile more equal. friends if the emperor is naked he's naked. we will see what the cuts tell us & as with all my efforts the info will be honest.
i really do'nt care if kershaw has improved or not since i usually buy spydie, benchmade & mostly great eastern in 1095. there is a good probability that if the leek is only 58 it may not perform as well as vg10 at 59 plus. higher rockwells are'nt always the first horse to touch the wire. longer soak times & triple tempers can greatly affect durability of edge abrasion. nothing is so simple when it comes to steel, the certificate on my crusader forge says s30 triple tempered with 59 to 60 .--dennis

Its apparent that this forum fills some sort of void in your life.. I am merely an amateur collector who catches bad guys by day and plays with his son at night. I have no such void in my personality. i honestly wouldnt bash a company or their knives for a 2 point diff in hardness and IMO its almost laughable that you do .. it seems a bit much .. maybe if you were a teacher of metallurgy in a college setting or some professional world reknown blade reviewer or publisher.. listen pal im not going to sit here and play whos king of the bladeforums or who can speak more eloquently and look smarter on the internet. frankly i dont care... fact is you started a troll thread with an inflammatory title and then tried to make everyone else here posting their replies look either like they were intellectually inferior to you or that they knew nothing about bladesteels or hardness etc listen i am wasting my breath on you because there is no reply that wont send you spiraling back into your rhetoric of how i am stupid and uyou are smart and how this is why 2 points means everything in hardness etc..

you win

enjoy the internet im going back to playing legos with my son and enjoying my night off from catching criminals in brooklyn.. i will leave you with this

I hardly "test" knives on "ropes and paper." I probably put a pocket knife through more cutting in a day than most people do in a month. I cut stuff a lot tougher than cardboard, paper, sisal rope, toilet paper or hair...I have dulled a S30V Military in 2 cuts of high performance commercial fishing rope.

Kershaw doesn't really need you to defend them. Their product speaks for itself. People will either buy the knives, like them, and recommend them, or they will buy the knives, not like them, and not recommend them.

Personally I have stayed away from Kershaw's upper end knives. Some of the grinds and blade shapes were too funky for me...The JYD II is a great knife but an Endura can be had for the same price and with more of the features I prefer. I will recommend a Spyderco over Kershaw, Benchmade, Cold Steel, etc, because Spyderco uses certain features in their knives that I prefer in a folding knife. I like the opening hole, and I like fully serrated knives. Does that make Spyderco a better company or a better knife than Kershaw? To me it does. because they have a hole in the blade, which I prefer, and offer fully serrated knives, which i prefer.

That said, the sharpest, smoothest opening knife I have ever owned out of the box was a Kershaw 2415. The knife opened like a switchblade and was as sharp as a straight razor.

And FWIW, Dennis didn't start this thread. It was started by a moderator who snipped the off topic posts from another thread and started a new one. He titled the thread directly out of Dennis' post. The other thread was, if I remember, about a composite leek and an endura. I'm too lazy to search out a link for you.

ETA- stay safe on the street. i come from a family of police officers. chill out, enjoy the night with your son, you get enough stress at work that you don't need it when you are relaxing on bladeforums.

What seems to be the problem? Ankerson tested CPM-D2 to have similar performance as S30V at Rc 60. Though I can't say for sure that the blade he tested was from Kershaw.

It might be a stretch since ZT is just a branch of Kershaw, but I would expect the 0551 in Elmax to perform well in cutting tests. And aside from that, I have high hopes for the Vanax series. Besides which, I thought Kershaw also ran their S30V pretty hard too?

If you want bad edge retention, I would give Benchmade's S30V a look, as well as the Sebenza. Now THAT is soft.

And are you sure you're not confusing "dull" with "toothy"? I thought CTS-XHP was dull as all hell within a few cuts, but the truth was the the edge just turned into an aggressive "toothy" edge like a serrated blade. If you try to push cut it won't do anything, but a slicing cut will go right through.

Not suited for me really, but Ankerson's rope test on XHP proved it wasn't "dull" by any means.

In the end, I still think steel choice is a personal preference. Just because I don't like one steel doesn't automatically make it worthless.

i have a question (sort of related) i own several Ritter grips/minis in s30v how is their hardness and edge retention rated and is there any reviews/tests done with any data i can view? as far as i can tell its the best blade i have ever owned (overall not just 1 facet like edge ret or slicing) and for owning 400 folders that says alot to me ..

i would value any test results you guys have available on the Ritter grip and mini grip

i am aware that s30v comes from the same company ..at basically the same hardness and only heat treating changes the hardness .. i was merely stating that there was another knife being made using it

and please the diff between 58-60 is not THAT much and certainly not worth my time for internet debate

read this quote and tell me the difference is substantial btw he is a professional knifemaker not some guy on the internet making claims he stated the diff between 56 asnd 59 isnt much so 58-60 is even less negligible

i will rephrase my comment because i feel you are taking it wrong.

i didn't say 2-3 HRC points will "make or break" a blade. what i am saying is: if i gave you 2 identical knives both made out of s30v to use but i didn't tell you what blade steels they were. one blade hardened to 57-58 the other 59.5-60, there is a very good chance you would think the knives were made from different steels.

i know that high hardness is not the only way. level of hardness should be decided by the type of steel used, knife design and how the knife is used.

So far my SnG has the best S30V I've used, and I've sampled quite a bit of S30V. However SKI does it, apparently that's the way I like my S30V. :p

ty for the clarification ... and i did get you wrong... :) sry for jumping all over you like a crazed maniac... i think my years of being a street cop have made me too reactionary :)

To be fair, a mod started this thread - Esav, with good reason, moved it here from another thread which was being completely derailed. The title is actually Dennis' post which started the poo storm. I have no stake in this but just wanted that point cleared up.;)

yeah i discussed it with another member and thats why i stopped posting about that ..i was unaware that a mod made the thread title

That's comforting....

I hope we'll be able to wade through worthless posts like mine and get at any objective testing that might get done....

yeah hopefully :) because thats whats important....... i wouldn't want people not to buy kershaws because a stranger on the internet said they were crap :)

wtb sense of humor for the thread

Well, I'm pretty interested to see what Dennis concludes, not that it matters to me personally. You should do a video.
