here's my entry john, email sent.
a small utility fixed blade to ride unoticed on the belt or in the pocket, i like the look of a lot of the slipjoint blades you see around. But you don't often see small blades like that on a fixed blade with enough handle for my four fingers (i have medium-large hands). enough to open your mail, dress a bird or cut a coolant hose off a jeep radiator.
new002-1.jpg

I nearly went for a Wharnie myself, a semi-wharnie is a great all round blade !

I thought I would design a blade that is a little fuller in the belly and could be used from anything from various bushcrafting tasks, to skinning game, and even food prep if needed.

I'm naming this design the "Mountaineer" for the adventurous spirit of the historical Mountain Man (and also for the picturesque mountains of my home state of West Virginia).

I like to rest rest my index finger on the spine of the blade while skinning game or doing food prep, so I incorporated that feature on the top section of the blade, while also having a resting place for the thumb while doing up close bushcraft work. Handle is smoothly rounded (no sharp edges) and no palm swells.

Details:

- O1 (convex)
- 1/8" blade thickness
- 1 1/2" blade height
- 8 1/2" OAL (4" blade / 4 1/2" handle)

Thanks John for having this great contest!

Oops, your right it's a deal bigger than 1 1/2 inches. I'll take it down. My bad.:o

I think maybe out of good faith I'll step out of this one. Good luck guys!

Here's mine...sorry for the crappy pic(had to use my phone). Pictured with a Fallkniven S1 for size reference. - 1 1/2" wide, 5" blade, 4 1/2' handle with extra space for the hand behind the blade, 3/16" thickness -

Don`t step out, just draw something else.

Well after thinking about it, it looked way too much like Pits other knife the ML Small Survivalist. Even though my thought process may have been my own in the design, it seems too much like cheating and I wouldn't feel right if I won even with another design.

It is virtually impossible to come up with a knife that doesn't bear some resemblance to another nowdays, as long as it's slightly different that's fine. All it takes is a finger groove on the handle or a thumb ramp etc to make it original. Get something sketched out, the more the merrier !;)

I'm with pit you probably won't design a functional knife that looks 100% original just as long as its not a complete copy

For me, John's Riverwood's Companion is a nice size for an EDC and can handle most jobs that an EDC is called for. But for cutting a big, juicy ribeye or pork shoulder, I prefer something with a longer blade. I would take the RWC, stretch out the 1/8" blade to 5" or 6" and now have an industrial strength steak knife that would be sure to turn heads around the camp fire. In the interest of cleanliness, I would omit spacers or a lanyard hole, but would put serrations in the first 1" of spine. I included a picture of the original RWC as my artistic ability isn't what it used to be.

some nice disigns up here. now i've gotta start scratching my head and drawing a few up.

didn't know the ML Small Survivalist was one of pitdog's designs. i'd looked at that one before and liked the lines.

Shotguner, like the others have said... it's really hard to come up with something entirely unique. as long as you don't set out to just rip off a design it seems fairly normal to pick up design cues form other things you've seen or used. clones ain't cool, but "inspired by" is fine.. hope to see a new submission from you.

See later post.

John, right now I have no way of drawing one up but my idea is.
The handle design from Rockywolf's EWOK and a 4 inch Kephart blade. If someone can help me out with a drawing I would appreciate it.

11 drawings is a good start, but the rest of you guys need to get off of the couch and start drawing something! :D You never know, I might stop the contest early. ;)

As we discussed the other day, I have one more to add but the artist's rendering will not be ready until tomorrow.

If you guys are cool with it maybe I'll come up with something later tonight. You know, something that actually fits into the design criteria.:D
