I made... something.

This is a first for me. Never met anyone with a pin obsession. More pins the better.

Do favor one pin material over another or just dig lots of big ones?

I have a rehandle project inbound and I'm already pondering the pin situation in my head. I lean toward brass myself but that wouldn't match the blade so might have to find aluminum. I want to do a top notch job on this one.

I'm kind of partial to hidden pins but we don't need to come out of the closet on that.

I'm thinking of maybe adding one extra for a total of 4 on this one. I really like how the copper looks on the pin I had to replace on the first one, might go with all copper. It peened out really nicely.

The problem with hidden pins is you can't peen them. Depends on how much of a beating the knife is going to take, I guess.

What I often do is peen them a bit, make the holes slightly oversize and acraglas them in place so it creates a mechanical lock. Need to clamp them together real good. This way each side is actually pulling against the other.

I've only done a couple but no sign of looseness yet.

I did this on a cute little folder for Sir Gehazi's dad. It looked pretty sharp with no pins.

On a large beast of a knife like your working I wouldn't go with hidden pins. I'd go big and many and peen the heck out of them. You done good on the first one, I have no doubt you'll do even better on this one if that's possible.

I went over to a friend's house(BF member SinePari) for a little hammer-in today. Had a blast forging out my first blade. I'm hoping to do a little grinding on it later tonight at another friend's house(BF member esnyx). It started life as a leaf spring, assumed to be 5160. I hand forged the edge to shape and then had some help from SinePari with cutting out the handle profile. It's still a bit rough right now but I think it will clean up nicely. I plan to do a convex grind and wood handles.

Before & after with another piece of leaf spring

Big thanks to SinePari for his guidance and use of his forge and materials. And big thanks to esnyx for his future help in finishing this bad boy.

Is Philllll want to be one of the blacksmith!

I'm not too particular on pin material too much, as long as it got good shear strength it'll be fine :)

Yes, I'm pin obsessed. Which makes me kinda sad that recent offerings in the DOTD are mostly two pins only. Minimum 3 numbers for me :)

I'm still waiting for my dream CAK of 4 pins on dharwood handle, around 16-21 inch total length, small cho, not bonecutter type snubnosed tip (pointy is good) and not boat anchor heavy. I'll wait patiently, been waiting for my dream Khuk.

Some call it the true Super CAK.

Bawanna, would love to read a WIP on your rehandling :)

Brass is nice, always wondered if titanium rods were possible. I own an old Sgt Khadka (or I think it was him) CAK in a re handled g10 handle. 4 hollow rivet too :)

Looking forward to the second one!

You're so lucky to have friends with amazing tools!!!! XD

Just got back from quenching this bad boy... now I'm off again to do some tempering and more grinding!

Nah it is differentially hardened already via an edge quench. It's tempering in the oven right now. I might end up using a torch to soften up the handle area a bit, though.

So now you just temper it to reduce the edge hardness a bit right? What temp are you cooking it?

Ndog, I cooked it at 375 for 1 hour, let it cool, then another hour. I did draw temper the end of the handle too because it took an inadvertent dip in the quenching oil and the bottom was harder than I wanted.

Finished 'er up tonight. Couple quick shots of the Philllllager while the oil sets in.
